Thanx for the compliment. "Truzi" is a nickname taken from my surname. My first name is one that is very common for people of my gender (for at least 100 years). In my neighborhood, in classes, jobs, etc., there have always been at least two other people with my name. In my sophmore year of college, a close friend started calling me "Truzi" for short, and it stuck. I've been known as Truzi ever since, both on the net, and in real life. John, I believe the ancient Greeks used to handle political positions similar to what you are suggesting. Socrates/Plato came up with the idea of representational government.
I'm going to take a different approach to this topic. If the government is so worried about social security and medicare costs they ought to be fighting to get us all killed in traffic accidents before we are old enough to retire. Therefore I would say that I don't understand why all the hub bub about wearing seat belts and air bags for adults. Of course, we need to protect children in safety seats so they can join the workforce and pay taxes. That makes perfect sense.
I also haven't read all the pages, but let me take a different angle on this topic. If the government is worried about social security and medicare gobbling up all the reserves they should welcome killing people off early by not enacting or enforcing safety laws. It stands to reason that the more of us that die horribly at an early age the better off the country will be. Of course, that's not true for the kiddies. Baby safety seats should be enforced so they can live long enough to come of age to pay taxes. Once they are adults, no more safety laws.
i only posted that the seatbelt law sucks, considering this is a buick board, when i had my 70 skylark, I most of the time only wore my lap belt... unless i was playing dukes of hazzard or at the track or something... that shoulder belt is very annoying!
I agree! This pretty much sums it up.... I don't like being told to do anything, but do wear my seat belt most of the time... I came of driving age better than 30 yrs ago and there were no such laws. I have a family now and for their sake, would like to increase my chances of survival if involved in a serious accident. Doing it for my own good not because someone says I have too.

Don't be "opinionless", Truzi....especially since you seem to agree with me! By the way, I had the idea you were female as well, based on something you wrote previously, or possibly the way you wrote it...don't remember anymore what it was. I don't care, anyway. If you are female, more power to you. I think it's great to have the diversity in the hobby.
We got pulled over last night for speeding coming home from work. It was my brother driving and he was long over-due! We had a long conversation with the TN trooper. I asked him about the seat belt law and his opinion. His answer was speedy and rehearsed. It was: "Drivers in this country do not have the right to drive a motor vehicle. Rather, a privilege to do so. So the government can force us to do anything while driving." He informed me that judges say the same thing to violators and that we should all be happy that the government allows us to drive.
Wear your seat belt it may save your life. It's law in Ontario. My daugther walked away unscathed from a multiple roll over because she wore a seatbelt. :TU:
Hi folks Take a quick second to read the poll again, since this has come back up- "Should you be forced to wear a seatbelt" is the choice, not "Do seatbelts save lives" or "Should you wear a seatbelt" The choice says "forced", which is not usually seen as a desireable thing. I think a lot of people still feel the issue is whether or not seatbelts are good and useful, and it actually isn't For instance, The Law doesn't say that I am forced to have a full roll cage in my car, and while that is safe, and safety is a good idea, I am not forced to install one. Being forced to do a smart thing...an interesting concept
In Pa they took away the helmet law for bikers but we are still forced to wear seat belts with 2 tons of steel wrapped around us. Land of the free? Not any more!!!
You are free, though. No Law says you must drive a car. Take a bus. You won't have to wear a seatbelt, which I find bizarre
We are just not free enough to do what we want in our own cars. I've gotten a real bad attitude toward govt in the past few years. Nothing personal
Hi Guys, Is it just me.......or does it strike anyone else as to the irony of how America has went literally around the world to force out dictators, communism and such in the name of freedom while at the same time, we, the people of America, are forced closer and closer into a "Democratic Dictatorship" as day-by-day we give up more and more of our own rights. Day in and day out we are told that what has always been thought of as "our rights" being Americans are now being re-written as "privileges"?? Too bad the average American has NO INTEREST in History or they would know that Hitler started out by slowly whittling away at rights that were deemed as "privileges" and was also "for the good of the people"!:Smarty: Remember....."THOSE THAT FORGET (OR IGNORE) HISTORY ARE BOUND TO REPEAT IT!" :spank: "Seatbelts save lives.........Blah, Blah, Blah" Well, an ABSOLUTE FACT is that they ALSO TAKE LIVES TOO! My Father was one of them in May 2000... :af: How about all of the advocates of seatbelts experience being trapped underwater upside down while trying to get out of your seatbelt as my Father did??? Think they would change their minds then???o No:
Firstly, I can't believe this thread has resurfaced, just like a bad nightmare. Kerry, I am truly sorry you lost your father in such a manner. You are certainly entitled to voice your opinion here. However the chances of someone perishing in that exact fashion are less than One half of One Percent You are far more likely to be killed by a red light runner, speeder, impaired driver etc. etc., than by drowning as a result of a collision. Again, I am truly sorry you lost your father.
Driving isn't a "priviledge" as people typically tell teenagers. If you meet all the requirements and pass all the tests (and obey the laws), they cannot prevent you from getting a license and driving. If it were a privilege, they could arbitrarily prevent whomever they wanted from having a license. It may not be a full right, but its also not a privilege. The same is true (at the moment) of firearms, among other things.
