Ok, first of all, I know seat belts save lives. I probably appear stupid to many drivers who see me not wearing one too. But, I just never got in the habit and now that they are pushing me, I don't want to. Is it just me, or is it overboard to write tickets to people like me who never wear belts? I have insurance to pay for the hospital bills when my dumb butt flies out of the windshield, so the government will not have to foot the bill. Tennessee law only could write a ticket if you were pulled over for another offense, but a new law now permits them to pull you if they spot the belt not over your shoulder. So give me your opinions.

Personally I think the law sucks. It should be my option if I want to wear it of not, but that's just my opinion.

This same state is now thinking about dropping the motorcycle helmet law. So, I must wear a belt, but a motor bike rider can go with his hair blowing?? Strange government.

  5. I got in the habit of wearing my seat belt just after college. It's become 2nd nature, and I don't feel comfortable driving without it hooked up. I lost a parent in '83, who would certainly have survived the car crash with a seat/shoulder belt in place. That was easily determined due to the nature of the injuries and the type of crash. My mother was just 43 at the time, same as I am now. My little girl won't go thru that. I can't think of a better reason to wear your seat belts, than for the sake of your kids.

I personally think it should be an option, not a law. Sure, seat-belts save lives more than not, and I wear mine as much as I can remember to click-it, but if you don't want to wear it, you shouldn't be forced to!:Smarty: Smart to wear it, but shouldn't have to if you don't want to!

    Just my .002 cents worth.

I have to go with the majority here so far. I do wear my seatbelt and when I ride I wear a helmet. Always have always will. But thats by my choice. The damn govt should stay out of it. There is just getting to be too many rules to keep us safe. It's our lives..

Kids are a different matter. They must be protected until they are old enough to make their own decisions

I personally think it is a good law. I think one of the big reasons for it is the fact that if you get in an accident, you are much more likely to be able to better control your vehicle if you are buckeled in than if you are flying around the cabin or out the window. I do admit that I am very anal about seatbelts. If you are in my car, we ain't going anywhere unless you click it. Probably why I have one of the few vehicles left w/the seatbelt buzzers still connected.

It's a good law for several reasons. One, it saves people who wouldn't otherwise wear one. Two, it saves a person at fault in an accident from major lawsuits if the seat belts helped saved injuries. Three, it reduces spending of tax dollars for paramedics, policemen, and medical services/supplies that would be used if no seat belt was used (and worse injuries were the result). Four, it's another opportunity to pull over a person who just may have an outstanding warrant or who has just committed a serious crime and is trying to elude police. Five, it helps save dash board parts for car collectors. Okay, that one was kinda selfish.

There may be some circumstances where a seat belt can actually contribute to serious injuries. But the majority of accidents are the kinds where seat belts can make a difference.

I am one of those who thinks in certain cases it is a good thing to wear a seatbelt, like when I am inches away from a 100 foot drop in my old Jeep, four-wheeling, and also when driving on the street in anything going over 40 mph. But, I dont think there should be a law to force me to do this. Kids should be in car seats and legally should be buckled in, because they arent old enough to know what they are doing, yet, but once we reach the age of maturity, if you want to go smear yourself against a bridge abuttment, please dont hit me when you do it. I'll watch it on the news.

Exactly, NO ONE goes anywhere in my cars without seat belts on! Both my aunt and grandma drove an ambulance for a small town that had an interstate that ran right alongside of it and often they were the first ambulance there, seeing a few of those accidents where people didn't wear their belts vs times people did would change you mind instantly.

Why not wear them? I know I would rather have a bruise on my stomach than a dent in my head while laying on my hood if some ass decides to stop suddenly in front of me! 5 Seconds to put them on could save you 5 years in a coma. I also like that it "ties" you into your car so you get a better feel for everything.

And don't tell the cop that you "took it off to get your wallet" because I use that and I *do* wear my seatbelt!

2 Cars head straight on at 40 mph, one driver has a seatbelt on, the other doesn't, who do you think will walk away and who will end up in the hospital??

The law should be mandatory in every state with a warning system that shows up with your license, cop gave you a warning last time, you get $50 fine this time which doubles on every other ticket!

Yes we need seat belt laws but everyone should wear atleast a 4 point. regular seat belts do not provide protection in every direction. Safety equipment is never comfy. comfy safety equipment is not very safe.

Instead of a law, you should be able to choose from two insurance plans:

    1) I will wear my seatbelt and pay less (but if I am in an accident without one, I will not be covered)

    2) Seatbelt-optional insurance (more expensive due to higher injury risk).

This is not an area where the law should be allowed to say anything. However, this is a perfectly legitimate area for the insurance companies to enforce, since they are the ones who are affected.

seatbelts save lives !! i have been wearing seatbelts since 1962 when my dad purchased a new 63 impala . he ordered it with belts .
since most of you anit-sealtbelters believe that children s/b belted into carseats , mandated by law , then why should u adults not also be belted in . u set the example . what is fair for the goose s/b fair for the gander .
i do , however , agree that we should have at least 4 point belts .
u guys realize that if it were not for people who chose not to buckle up , that we would not have airbags .

I have to say I am suprised at the poll so far. Seems to be a run-away for the Pro law people. Some valid points too. Insurance companies are the main push in this campaign. Insurance does in fact rule the world!! As far as raising the rates for dumbies like me, they get way too much already. We live in a society where we work our asses off just to pay for insurance, so let them do their job and fix my head when it goes through the glass!! I buckle my little boy up before we start the car. He has no choice in the matter. I hope he is in the habit of it. Glad I don't have to ride with some of you who would make me buckle up before leaving in your cars. Guess I would just get out and walk. I still say it, the government has its nose in too many things.

After 4 years of racing, 2 on dirt and 2 on pavement I TRULY believe in wearing seat belts, I've been in more fences, dirt banks and on my lid and god bless my 5 point harness (and helment) everytime I was in a crash....you have to remember that 90% of the time its the other idiot behind the wheel, and thats out of your control....:eek2:

    Gee....

I vote for the law, and thought I was in the minority.:Dou:

But I don't believe anyone should be ticketed for NOT unless being pulled over for some other violation.

The problem is we ALL pay higher insurance rates (because of the higher medical bills) of injuries to people NOT wearing them.

Now if insurance co's did NOT cover those that didn't wear them, then I'd flip flop and agree it should be a personal choice. And for the stupid parents that refuse to buckle their children, (much less use a child restraint), proceedings should start to REMOVE the children from the home. That should get their attention.:Smarty:

I Do wear my belts, & am a FIRM believer in Helmets, BUT it is by CHOICE & experiences, NOT because I was forced, and DON'T think it should be "a Law", except to protect Children, who wouldn't know any better 1 way or another, and need Supervision.
2 past roll over accidents, if I hadn't been belted in, I probably wouldn't be here now. (mixed blessing for some)
