That doesn't always work. I had a '62 Chrysler 300 (purchased used) that had them. It turns out that they were an option.

I know, they were even standard in 1965, but it was still possible to delete them for a credit that year. It's always possible to delete them today! (without credit!).

Wear the belt so the "government" doesn't have to go through the trouble (and expense) of scooping your bloody carcass off of the pavement because you cared too much about your freedom to buckle up.

A little harsh, but that's how I see it.

since my 72 gs has both individual lap belts & shoulder harness, i only & always wear the lap belt, but never the shoulder harness. in ontario, if the seatbelt system is not integrated (lap belt & shoulder harness as one belt), u do not have to wear the shoulder harness.
on my saturn astra xr & sl, i always wear the belts.
buckle up! it only takes a few seconds. it is a case of life or death!

The seat belt will save you when the girl that is talking on the cell phone while putting her makeup on broadsides you.

I personally always use one as well as my whole family but I will not wag my finger at anyone who doesn't, unless they don't make their kids buckle in which there's no excuse for. They can decide for themselves when they start driving their own car and pay their own insurance.

It all starts with one chink in the armor (of personal freedoms). These personal freedoms that slowly disappear are like small rust spots that start and go untreated.

Maine wants to make a law that fines adults for smoking in the car with kids. I am not a smoker, nor do I defend submitting your infants to an opium den, but that's neither here nor there. The point is, the government will come up with one little freedon after another that they take away and before you know it they will be piggybacking all kinds of freedom restrictions until it gets to a point where we are like, WTF is happening?

I love Maine. Seatbelts are mandatory but motor cycle helmets are optional. Only a politician can understand this because any upright intelligent creature cannot.

In Belgium you are no longer allowed to smoke at work, same thing here in the Netherlands.

But now even Belgian truckdrivers are no longer allowed to smoke in their trucks, because the next day a non-smoking colleague could be driving in that same truck

Only owner-operators can smoke in their rigs, but they have to fill in a form that they are the only person ever driving in that truck as long as they will own it.

I wish that a similar law would get enacted here, but at least I'm the only driver of my bosses truck. And he knows my stance on nobody ever smoking in it.:TU: He's also a non smoker.

I never smoked in my life, so I don't really mind when people are smoking in my car.
But it's always me who has to clean out the ashtray

And for some strange reason I keep sniffing at my fingers after doing that......:Dou:

I would say it is your choice as long as if when you are in an accident with out a seat belt on you give up all rights to financial assistance from the government. (IE disability or medical assistance on bills) that many states will provide if not properly insured. Why should I have to pay for the fact you are a dumb ass and won't were a belt. same with helmet laws don't were one but if you get hurt and can't work ever again I hope you have enough money in the bank no welfare or disability for you. I am sick of paying for people who can work but don't or do stupid S*&t and figure I should support them while I work my ass off to provide for my family. Don't get me wrong I don't mind people collect legitament claims but if you decide not to buckle up thats on you or not wear a helmet thats on you. If you jump off a building to see if you can fly thats on you not me why should I pay for your stupidity.

I created the never ending thread! It shows up from time to time. Still don't think it's right to make me wear one! Am I dumb for not doing it? Yes I am. Do I wear mine now? Sometimes I do.

What's the penalty for not wearing your seat belt in North America  ?

    Here you have to pay 90.00 / 125.74 US$

    Using a mobile phone while you're driving a car or bicycle = 150.00 / 209.58 US$

Michigan has been advertising a $65 fine per incident for not wearing a seat belt. I wish they'd concentrate on stopping people on cel phones speeding up, slowing down, drifting in their lanes, etc. because THAT is dangerous!!!

The fine in Minnesota is $30.00.

Minnesota has had a seat belt law for some time now.
Only the police couldn't pull you over if they believed you weren't wearing it, they needed to pull you over for something else, and then could ticket you for not wearing a seat belt.

The MN Legislature this session changed the law so the police can now pull you over soley for the seat belt.

I await the day I am driving the '70 and get pulled over because a cop thinks I am not wearing it, when in fact I will be, just not the shoulder belt. :bla:

    Greetings,
I personally like the law requiring the driving public to wear seat belts. There is no doubt seat belts saves lives not just the driver but for others in the vehicle. In a major traffic problem I feel if all drivers are wearing seat belts the chances of them staying behind the wheel for better control are definitely greater. This fact could very well make the outcome of a bad situation much better. Also I think the law has make a difference in families buckling up. I notice families buckling up as soon as they enter the vehicle plus reminding one another to buckle up. Families automatically doing the seat belt buckle up as part of riding in vehicles I think is just great.
Some of the states have penalties that are certainly too pricey. Not everyone will agree with my opinions but do they ever. No

    Fine here is $104.00

Cops sat outside a high school last week and ticketed everbody.

I thing that was bogus. If you're going to do that sit outside a bar and arrest the drunks! This is the biggest party town in the university world. Last year a drunk kid ran over and killed a cop trying to stop him from leaving a parking lot after the cop witnessed him try to walk to his car drunk.

The cops give warnings to kids who are drinking.
