Hey, my horn is a lot louder than any of their stereos or fart cans, I'll bet your is too!

Learned that one from a cranky old man in a beat-to-pieces pickup truck outside of a 7-11 one night. Da Boyzzz went inside, leaving their thumpy-thump stereo going so they wouldn't miss a note. This old guy comes out of the store, gets in his truck, and lays on the horn. Just held it down the whole time they were in the store, and while they came out, got in their ride, and turned the stereo down.

Funny thing was, he had this bored look on his face the whole time, like it was no big deal blowing a horn for 5 minutes.... :Brow:

For me....You know it's just right when you can set off a few neighbor's import's alarms a block away while you're just idling in the driveway!

loudest vehicle i ever had was my '55 chevy round window pick up. "slightly" built up 283/holly/cam/4-speed/headers to open exhaust that exited right behind the cab. MAN, by the end of the night my ears would be ringing from all that rowing through gears and taching. kinda miss the old girl :( but i got the "quiet is better" bug from all the guys who had headers and full exhaust systems who's cars actually kicked ass over the "loud and obnoxious" crowd. and the cops only gave you a couple of looks in the parking lot if your car had a sweet idle. not like the trouble [and tickets] they gave to you if you were too obvious. plus, when you went to pick up "sweetie" at her folk's house, daddy would give you more respect if you had a nice car that didnt interupt 'jeopardy' :TU:

I like them to be very mellow at idle or at cruise speed. But when the fart can comes by on the highway and you dropped the hammer the what the ? look comes to their face as the Q-jet and the duals start talking thats where the fun is. I do not have any idea what the system is that is on the 72. It was there when we bought the car. 2 1/2 inch with stock manifolds and Walker something? All I can tell is the Walker name on the case and they are twice the size of a Flowmaster? Any ideas?

Loud to a point, but really depends on the tone. I really hate the high pitch sounds, or the raspy sound you hear from some setups. Now, if it's just a loud, deep rumble, then it's good. :)

I just put a flowmaster american thunder 2 1/2" exhaust system on my Skylark. The kit comes with 30 series mufflers. They sound a little different from flowmasters everyone is used to, but they still sound awesome. They have a low rumble and are fairly quiet, I really like em. I love loud musclecars that sound good. Kevin

Just had the exhaust changed to dual 2.25 and couldn't be happier. reminds me of cars that i see and think "he's got something special under the bonnet". finally i can hear what it's supposed to sound like.
My other car, (don't hate me) a S1 RX-7 has extractors, hot dog and straight through muffler. It is sooooooo loud. when warming it up at home, things have fallen off shelves. driving beside parked cars sets off their alarms. it's starting to annoy me now though.

I like the rumble as opposed to the roar. A Buick should be seen and not heard. When ever you can here a car from a half mile away, it always bugs me. I like the low toned rumble, I even like a little roar, but hte straight pipes or open header sound is just to much for me, I can't even imagine driving it.

I love the sound of my Glass Packs, loud at Acceleration but quiet enough at cruise.Granted,it's only a small block.I dont think I would like it if it was a 455.Maybe 30 years ago in my 20s but a BBB with dual glass pax would bring down the heat real quick around here.Altho the Harley Boys can get away with straight pipes,we have to adhere to the noise laws. The cops must be afraid of bearded fat guys....PONCH

Last night, I was doing 65 down the interstate in the old yellow Ranchero, had the windows open, wing windows adjusted *just right*, and it was eerie....I swear, it was so quiet that as other cars drove by (hey, it's a tired 170cid inline 6) all you could hear was their wind noise and tires....they just kinda went whispering on by, even the 18-wheeler trailers - pretty cool!!!

Wow, it's become very obvious what the majority of the buick crowd likes as far as the sound of their cars go! :Comp:

    The Law should be:

    Loud CARS! :3gears:

    QUIET Motorcycles! :TU: :bglasses:

Harleys are "pretty" with the Chrome and all, but they're more obnoxious than the Rice cars! :Smarty::moonu: Just my opinion!:bglasses:

Since my Skylark caught the muffler on a High Curb, and got Ripped Off, completely (manifolds back, now running NO exhaust! ), even my neighbor that HAS a Harley is complaining about how loud my CAR is! You know what they say about "Paybacks..."! :TU: :spank: :moonu:

Otherwise the GS's have 2 1/2" with Super Turbos! Cheap, but effective! :Smarty:

If you don't like loud....then don't come to my area...I have a 118 cam,TA headers and a 3 inch exhaust with race bullet mufflers on my 71 GS 350 4 speed car.Sounds like a healthy Big Block idling...I obviously like em loud, but I live in a rural area so its ok.

I agree w/ that! Those motorcycles drive me up the wall w/ their loud straight pipes, they're just too much for me, even though most of them look pretty snazzy and awesome. If they are allowed to have straight pipes then it should be legal for cars to have straight pipes on the street, in my honest opinion, cars sound way better w/ straight pipes than any motorcycle, of course that's just my opinion. :bglasses: I hope that the lawnmower "experts" someday will come up w/ a muffler that will make lawnmowers quiet, they are just as bad as motorcylces as far as abnoxious noise IMHO. But that's besides the topic. When it comes to cars-straight pipes/or dual exhaust, either way, on a classical american car, as long as it's loud it sounds good to me. :TU: :3gears:

Since I own an exhaust shop, all of my Buicks have duals. Some with turbos, some with flowmasters, some with Xcelerators. Glasspacs aren't my "cup of tea" anymore since I've gotten older. They don't flow very well either. The way a car sounds has a lot to do with cam, compression, cubic inch, size of pipe, timing, etc. It seems no two cars sound exactly the same. The nicest sounding cars I have are the ones with M/T headers,3" X -system,Flowmaster 30 series, and full tailpipes. I do alot of X systems for customer cars. The first thing you noice is they are bit quieter and they've got a unique sound to them. They kind of sound like the old 180 stockcar headers. They are worth the extra money, they really work.
    Thanks,Scott

hey scott, welcome to the debate. i bet you are probably getting your share of "rumbling" exhaust going through your town these days, what with sturgis being just down the road. missoula has been overrun with overly loud harleys for the last week or so because of them, and i for one couldnt take traveling for long distances with the constant droning of the open exhausts on the big twins. i like the sound of my old hondas with their aftermarket 4 into 1 systems. this isnt the "fart can" sound you get from ricer cars or the newer sprt bikes, but an original sound only made by older inline fours. i think a good exhaust system will do that for any gasoline engine. at idle it can give a deceiving sound of being relaxed, but crank or romp on the throttle, and it can give the impression that all hell is breaking loose! this sound, i believe, should come from the ENGINE, not the exhaust system itself. when i step on it, i think the ROAR should come from the front of the car, not the back... :beer

That's very true, the exhaust sort of allows the engine to express it's power through sound to impress it's owner and others around it. :Brow:
