Lou --one difference is a model versus a forecast. Another is the EU spent the money it takes to produce the best weather model out there backed up by a lot of computing power. The NWS here is behind in large part due to inadequate funding. But they are improving some. The EU model predicted this event a week in advance when the disturbance was coming into the Gulf of Alaska. Very impressive since the resulting low pressure center did not form until last Friday off the Carolinas. In the old days this event would have been much more of a surprise.

But overall if the local weather geeks were not so overly concerned about being accused of being wrong, they could at least mention the EU model has a red flag raised. I wonder if some local stations pay for the EU model data service when the NWS data is free. I would like to know the answer to that one myself.

Hi Guy's,yes my driveway is pretty good now,no thanks to Larry or...but thak you's are in order to Alan for his generous offer. My neighbors across the street, all 5 members descended into my property with shovels and a snow blower and kind of clear me out.But in Larry defense,I have to say that even if he is kind of close to me,not close enough with this kind of snow.He would not have any room to park,as snow is piled 3 feet high all over the place.Bruno.

Thanks for all the updates throughout the week Jim.
I however due admit that I am one of the people that just don't believe a forecast more than a day or two out.

I still was reading your daily updates and made sure we were prepared for this storm, better to be safe then sorry.

I used the Euro model to alert the V8 Board 7 days in advance that Hurricane Sandy would strike New York. At that time it was south of Cuba. All the American models indicated Sandy was headed towards England.

.. as far as predictions vs. actual

Fri nite prediction for eastern L.I. was 8-12" when I went to bed .. all said and done we were around 30" :idea2:

As far as I'm concerned, when they say "Blizzard" I expect the worst .. and usually get it. They can't predict the "banding" waves of snow and how much they will dump

Another alert for this Thursday -Friday for another storm on the east coast. The issue is how far east will it be before it runs up the coast line. Doug was not satisfied with the last one.

In defense of Larry, he did have to dig his Riviera out of 4 foot snow drifts, and had he moved his car on a Sunday, it is very likely he would not have had an open spot when he returned, and would have had to dig a new spot if it was at all possible. No one was going anywhere yesterday.

In addition to that, my brother who had taken a cruise vacation last week, was due to fly back on Saturday. His flight was of course, cancelled, and rebooked, you guessed it, on Sunday. Originally supposed to land at 1:38, at LGA, it did not land untill 2:30, and had to wait for a tow to the gate, finally arrived at 3:30, and I picked my brother up at close to 4:00. His was the 3rd flight to arrive at LGA that day. I had to dig a section of snow about 6' square and 3 feet deep to get my brothers car out of his garage to go and pick him up, and that was a job in itself.

That will only last until fest Eddie breaks on "Buicks". Then Bruno will test his reaction time, and Fest Eddie will never drive or walk the same way again.

I got way more seat time at the table then you Moishe:bla:

    Coming Thursday Sat Storm Update:

UPDATE ON THE FRIDAY POSSIBLE SNOW/ EVENT **

The midday data shows that the threat for Thursday night and Friday is actually DECREASING. see image #1 - it shows the 12z Monday afternoon European model which is just come out ...valid for for Thursday 7:00 PM and Friday 7:00 AM. The green stuff represents the precipitation and the purple line is the rain snow line. As you can see the LOW is actually further away from the coast than on the previous European model runs and all the precipitation is off shore as well. The purple line shows as the atmosphere is cold enough to support snow over Central Virginia and Maryland but right now the trend is for the system to be too far off the coast.. There may be some rain over southeastern Virginia and Eastern North Carolina but there the temperatures are too warm and the rain does not look significant.

In any that keep in mind that no matter what you are read or see elsewhere and some other social media and web sites... that the Friday threat is not a big deal. Even the system moves closer to the coast this LOW Friday is going to move much faster and will be much weaker than the historic snowstorm we just experienced.

we are NOT giving the "all clear" here because the Low track could still shift west

After this system leaves... there will begin a warm up as the models are showing a major storm hitting the Midwest on February 2-3. This system over the Midwest will pull up a lot of mild air which will assist in snow melt and some rain on February 2 or 3 when the cold front arrives. After that ..the models are showing a new cold front and possibly a stormy pattern for February 5-7... with other data suggesting the mild pattern redevelops after February 8
