    Cool! :beer

I'm ready to prime mine. I'd do it this coming Saturday, but some previously scheduled family plans stand in the way.

    I hate when that happens!

So I stopped by the body shop today after work today. Unfortunately they had closed by the time I got there. I did look through the window though and saw it sitting in the shop.

Looks like the vinyl top has been removed. Both the front and rear glass is out. The whole left side of the car has been stripped to metal. They started doing some skim coats of filler on the front fender.

Im going to stop over there bright and early Monday morning with the camera before I start my day.

Here's a few pics. This is the quarter panel that was loaded with bondo. Surprisingly, there was very little damage under all that plastic. 90% of it was unwarranted.

Good thing I had them take the glass out! There was only a very small amount of rust showing on the dash.

Great pics Jason! That quarter panel doesn't look bad at all - I'm sure there will be a lot less bondo this time!

I dont know what they have planned Jim, but they didnt seem to be too worried about it. They do excellent work so I'll leave it up to them.

They rejected my plan which was a gallon of gas and a match.

And a picture of the semi completed grill and headlight door. The Rustoleum satin black laid out perfectly. Im going to let it dry for at least a week or two before I mask off the silver.

Im not sold on the bright aluminum color forthe egg crate section. I think it should be a little darker. Im going to use Randy's idea of black vinyl to do the solid sections of the egg crate. Im going to stop by a local place and get a piece of flat black 3M vinyl. I already made up the templates.

BTW- I took a picture of the grill in my kitchen just for Dale!

Explain the vinyl- I aint getting it :Do No:
Are you making vinyl squares you stick in as masking from a sign shop??

Im going to cut some 3M black vinyl and stick them in the solid areas of the egg crate. Its too hard to paint them ( I tried) and too tedious to mask them off. The vinyl will give me a nice crisp edge.

    Lovin it! :TU:

Doesn't look all that bad for filler.

Black vinyl electrical tape might work too Jay - easy to cut 'n trim, but not sure about the adhesive qualities though, specially when it's exposed to the heat of the sun - looking good though !
Your rear window and cowl rust is pretty common for 2nd generation Rivs, A pillars are sometimes flakey too, especially in the lower area - you can drill small drain holes in the very bottom, and load em up with a rust preventative oil spray (Krown, Rustchek, or suitable US equivalent) - works well in the inner fenders, lower inner door areas, and lower rear quarters or any areas where moisture will attack any bare untreated, unpainted metal surfaces or crevices. :TU:

Ok, One headlight door is done. I think I might be legally insane by now.

The trick is to paint it black first, then use something the sign shop called "paint mask". Looks like vinyl, but has an adhesive that's easy to peel up. Worked like a charm. They're gonna get the whole car done before I complete the grill!

Which reminds me, i have to go check on that load this week. See what those guys are up to!

    Here's a before and after-

    J -

Please explain in detail what/how you are doing this!

Yards- I took the grill and headlight doors and sprayed Easy Off on them. After I sprayed them down, I wrapped them in a black garbage bag for a couple of days. The old paint simply hosed off. I did a couple more applications to remove the stubborn areas. But as you can see from the previous pictures, I got the grill down to the original plastic. That Easy Off trick saved this grill. I really thought it was wasted.

Once the grill was cleaned and lightly sanded, i painted it with Rustoleum automotive dark gray primer. Once the primer dried, I painted the grill in Rustoleum satin black. I havent gotten to painting the egg crate section silver yet.

The black recesses on the headlight doors were tricky. On the 68 grill, you need to paint them in reverse. Black first, then mask off the black and paint silver. I tried doing it the other way around and brush painting the black, but it came out like ass. Its almost impossible. Im debating weather or not to strip that one down again or just paint over the silver with black then silver again. Does any of this make any sense? I cant tell anymore..

The silver I used is Rustoleum dull aluminum. Its the "mettalics" line. Its dries almost instantly.

But....your 69 grill would be much easier. After you remove all the pot metal trim, its pretty much only one color- silver. The only black is on the trim pieces.

    OK.

Then you cut a bunch of small rectangles and stuck them over the areas you wanted to keep black? Then after the silver was dry youpelled them off? What did you use to get in there and lift off the tape?

Exactly. I used an X-Acto knife to carefully get under the paint mask and peel up a corner.

Looking good J, . . . would be interesting to see how Mr. Goodwrench, or the original supplier did it - some of the painted areas on various parts (ie: hubcaps, etc.) are very intricate and can be a real 'PITA' when it comes time to resto them ! :beer :TU:

Looks like theyre back at it in full force. I stopped by today to talk to the owner about the finances and to make sure we're both on the same page as to what I expect this car to look like.

Here are a few shots from today. Unfortunately. the roof rail trim will need to be removed one way or another. They hit one piece with the DA by accident trying to work around it. That was inevitable. And they bent and cracked another trying to remove it. S**t, I could of done that easily and it wouldnt of cost me anything! :Dou: There ar bits of vinyl top material under it that need to be removed also. Plus it will make the vinyl top install that much nicer.

So Im looking for a set of roof rail mouldings for it. Im hoping I dont have to buy another car to get them:pray: .

The rust in the pinchwelds around the windows is surprising. For what looked like a rust free car, it sure had alot of hidden rust:eek2: The bottom of the windshield is looking a little better. Most of the car is now in primer. I have to deliver the hood to him tomorrow.
