So Buick powered non-Buicks can race b1, b2? I knew they couldn't run ss16, or gsr for obvious reasons. I'm in a mad dash to get the cutlass apart and back together before August for a local "street car" index race. I'll have to unhook the trans brake to run that class, so if something like that was required, I wouldn't mind to do it at the GS Nationals either. I just missed getting the thing together for this year, I was hoping to find my niche to settle into next time. I'll be ready to race the cutlass with Buick power long before life will allow me to make the investment to one of these cars, and I'd like to race with some of you before this thing dies out if it's possible.

Ok, let the ls engines in, but require them all to be in black Regals.

I suspect the only reason the event was such a big hit attendance wise this year is because of the covid shutdown and nobody being able to get out and do anything for a year. It'll be interesting to see what happens next year.

From what I remember May generally pulled more cars than October?
This was the first open May date in years. Nice weather, GSX Reunion and people wanted to reconnect. If I miss a year I push harder to attend the next one.
Every year the complaints come and people put the Nationals as 1 foot in the grave.
How do you limit the number of cars, preregister only? Those that don't get in will be annoyed and complain that the GS club won't let them run. As the phrase goes "just saying"

I see and agree with all your points except this one^^^ right here. I'm in Canada and by law couldn't attend the nationals which I was planning to this year if it weren't for the covid/border lockout so that's out of my control. I am a strong avid buick supporter and whenever I meet people that have buicks or are looking for parts or help on kijiji (like your guys Craigslist) I point them to this site directly. I am also one of very few Buick owners in my area and I'm usually the only one with any kind of Buick at our local Monday night 200+ car cruise in/show. So is that Buick enough to have an opinion on this thread? Not looking for a fight but we're all a Buick family and our family is going to continue to shrink unless we ALL AS A TEAM do something about it instead of dividing in a debate thread and choose sides on something that is inevitable.

"If you haven't been to the GS Nationals lately or plan on going soon or have not supported some local Buick show or race then why are you even discussing this?"
I will always be a Buick guy, and my next one is likely to be a GS. I'm currently having a Chevy-powered Oldsmobile quarter-life crisis and am enjoying myself. I'll be back, and you guys are awesome people to learn from. However, I want to be able to attend the 2035 GS Nationals when I'm ready, just like the rest of you all would.

Hoping the nationals will grow in popularity, without change, is like looking at the clock and praying that it'll start ticking backwards. Aint happening

Mike is making a simple point. Like not voting and bitching about the results. Obviously roadblocks were put up for some. No blame on them. I think the pure Buick enthusiast is Buick as the forefront of their thinking. A muscle car enthusiast likes a look and performance. They are not the same thing are they?

This kind of division will bring no good to the event or club. There is no easy solution here. Perhaps mandate either a Buick engine or a Buick car?

I agree. I enjoy all makes and models of classics but my heart belongs to the Buicks in the end. I am in no means a "purist" but I do respect the purists as they've devoted decades to the Buick hobby and they all deserve that respect 100%. My major qualm is that the hobby is shrinking and maybe the Buick family should ease up a tiny bit on some of the "restrictions" due to the decline of the hobby in general. Like I said before we're a family and if the Buick forefathers of the family says Nay to the LS boys joining the party then I guess I'll have to support their decision. And just to be clear I'm not and LS guy in the slightest, I'd rather a fuel eatin' big block all the way or a dirty diesel, then maybe an electric before I go LS :D

Most LS swaps are just people taking the easy way out. I want to see you DO THE WORK!

These are BUICKS...Hold them to the higher standard that they deserve!

I have no problem with corporate power if you have outgrown the Buick Aftermarket, not just because you saw the other monkeys do it.

You must have missed where in the middle I said "If they let in LS/Brand X in I'll still be there." I've been to ALL of them and I will go to as many more as I can. About the only thing that would scare me is if it would become the Buick LS Nationals.

I'll say it again. Have you been there to support any kind of Buick event lately? In the last couple of years? Not necessarily this year or last or because of un-foreseen events you couldn't make it to any of them the last couple of years. What about two years ago or anything this summer or next year? Even as a spectator? 2035? I hope they allow you to drive a gas powered car by then. 5 years down the road is even too far to help. It may be too late. The only division that I see is the people who support Buick events by attending what they can and those that don't. Doesn't matter if it is GS Nationals or some more local event. I can't imagine anybody on this site not supporting "Buick" but keyboard strokes are cheap. I believe there are around 20,000 members of V8 plus the 1000's that hang around the Turbo V6 sites and yet 500 total members of those sites can't show up with their cars for the biggest all Buick performance event.

Good excuse, bad excuse, or no excuse for not making it to this years Nationals you missed what was the biggest turnout since the 25th Anniversary event. What will next years excuse be? I'm sure it will go on for a bunch more years but I can't imagine what it would take to get that many people and cars together in BG again. Getting a dozen or couple dozen more cars in the door with Brand X power will certainly help keeping it going but to make it as big event as this was on a normal year(without some kind of anniversary) would require a hundred or more of those type "Buicks". Next year the car count will go down noticeably and people will be proclaiming it is on deaths door and yet won't show up to support it.

Gary I agree with what you are saying but I can't help but think if there was a little spice at this event then it would increase excitement. Maybe a few gauntlets thrown down would force some guys to take the throttle stops off so to speak. Very few guys are pushing the envelope but that speaks to other issues such as getting the parts needed to go fast. You know first hand how difficult it is to build a stout Buick motor. We have a block but not much else. Custom made parts are the norm. Lots of things being promised but not much delivered. This keeps a lot of guys on the sidelines instead of racing.

I've attended every year except for one for the last 23 or so years. Sometimes with a race car, sometimes with a showcar and sometimes without a car. But I always show up. I won't argue with you about attendance because mine speaks for itself. I do understand your point though. People have to make it a priority to attend. It should be something that is taken seriously I believe. I just look at it as one of the things I do every year.
All I'm saying is it wouldn't hurt to set up a race class for non buick powered race cars. Get some excitement brewing. Have some grudge races and have some fun.

As you know you weren't one of the people I'm talking about. As I said I'm fine with a specific class for Brand X too. Way back I actually showed up with a '78 Z28(when my '65 broke an axle and consequently a quarter panel) shortly before the Nationals. Raced it once or twice before I was asked if it was Buick powered. No it wasn't so I was told no more TnT for you but I was still happy to be there.

Now this is the kind of Buick I love seeing going down the track. As nice as just about any show car and real Buick power.

Sorry if I took what you said personally. Things are lost in internet translation sometimes.
They have let the non buick powered guys make passes for quite a few years now so some of what everyone is debating is kind of a moot point. Maybe if these guys continue to show up we just put together some races w the Buick powered cars. Could be exciting and get the juices going.

This doesn't make sense. Earlier Jim said its more expensive to build a LS so how's that taking the easy way out?

The monkeys around here keep telling me to swap in a BBB which has been done over and over again, dosen't get more cookie cutter than that.
