Thank you for reposting what I wrote. And nowhere did I write restamping of a vin. Please don't think I was assuming that either, I was not. I did do some research
A quick Google search for Illinois law, there may be other sections that deal with it; http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilc...hapterID=49&SeqStart=62600000&SeqEnd=64200000
I wish I would have found out, But when I worked at the body shop. We had a dodge crew cab come in. The cab was beyond repair we put a new cab on it. Like it was nothing. I never found out the legal BS that was involved. but I did here word about legality, etc. Tim
I have a 71 GS 455 car that is in need of a complete body minus the a pillars and firewall and am going to repair it with another car because I do not want to use all the cheap sheet metal out there, so I got a 72 body to repair it with. I will have to replace the quarters on the replacement body but I have GM Quarters for it. I am hoping to post the project on here as I go along.
The law makes no distinction between a stolen car and a restoration project. In the eyes of the law, restoring a car is illegal. Most of us should be in jail
And I bet that new cab didn't have a VIN tag attached to it. About 15 years ago my bodyshop friend got the same type of job on a GM pickup. A new cab shell with no VIN tag. After it was refinished and during assembly the VIN tag was removed from the destroyed cab and riveted to the new one with the proper rosette rivets supplied by GM. It makes me wonder what an individual is to do when doing a complete disassembly restoration where removal of a VIN tag is required to do a correct paint job as on some of the mid to late 60's cars that the VIN tag is riveted to the door post. What kills me is that it has been decided and ruled in court that personal cars/pickups are consumer items much like a TV or refrigerator. Is it agaist the "law" to remove a serial # from a refrigerator ? It's also not mandatory for consumer items to be licensed or registered. But I guess in the case of cars and guns.........................
Steve, That's well put and into laymans terms. Thanks. This is a felonie offense folks. A person to knowingly remove, alter, deface, destroy, falsify, or forge a manufacturer's identification number of a vehicle or an engine number of a motor vehicle or any essential part thereof having an identification number
Yeah, and now high capacity gun magazines will HAVE TO BE REGISTERED in Connecticut :blast: Peace WildBill
The law makes no distinction between car restoation and car theft. Restoring a car is a felony in the eyes of the law just like car theft. There is no difference
This is a felonie:shock: In Missouri it is illegal to remove the VIN from any vehicle and any vehicle where it must be removed for repair will require a visit to the State police and involve a State police affixed ID tag. This law says you cannot remove, deface, or restamp numbers period. It doesn't stop a restoration if you do not remove the VIN. I asked When I installed a rear section to see if they had a problem with this and the answer was no. Wen asked about say replacing a frame they again had no problem but if you ever investigated you better have invoices for the frame or the title that came from that vehicle. I have the title from the car we sectioned
Not that my '68 GS will ever be a 300K car but the factory stamped my block on the wrong side (good weed that day:laugh. How do I prove that its not a re-stamp? You can barely read the numbers. Also, the window stickers I reproduce could never be mistaken for original (no perforations on the edge, thicker paper, text on the bottom "this is not an original window sticker", not aged). I guess uneducated people could mistake them for original though. Anyone can buy a blank reproduction sticker and make their own. I have never made a sticker that was aged or one with the high end options like Stage 1 or GSX without factory or dealer documentation of some sort or without a statement "owner installed". But after seeing this I am considering not making any stickers anymore:shock: I don't want any part of this type of situation.
this LS-6 ragtop wasnt this nice when i saw it in a garage in Marietta,Ga back around 1990 http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=767&aid=467
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I'm going to assume some people are just joking around and not serious about their posts in this regard.
Hey guy's. Just one question: Who owned the car the first time it sold at auction? Does anyone know for sure? In CT. we must include the vin# of the donor car on our invoice for any salvage parts, both mechanical or body. I have seen Thorton's work, just beautiful.. I can not believe they would fake paperwork.(at least i hope not) Regards Frank.
I admit, it was a little tongue in cheek. But I ask you this- if someone is doing a frame off and the VIN plate and trim tag get removed from the vehicle for safe keeping and get put back on the same vehicle with the correct rivets, whats the harm? Yes, technically in the eyes of the law its a crime. But so is spitting on the sidewalk. Its really a victimless crime isnt it?
