My bad Artie, I was going off of your sig. I was wondering the same thing about the timing. It seems like it would be a total dog all over the powerband if it was timing, not just nosing over at the top end.

The way the plugs look, I still think the jetting is going to make some big gains. I suppose you could advance the timing by "feel" and listen for any pinging. If you hear pinging, check the timing with a light, and we'd have a ballpark idea of if the balancer has slipped.

i have a dial back timing light. i can keep advancing my initial till i hear pinging... how will this tell if the balancher has slipped? what exactly does that mean? not at tdc?

Make a piston stop out of an old spark plug. Knock out the porcelain and tap the shell for a 3/8 bolt (4" long). Then thread it into the #1 cylinder. Rotate the engine with a breaker bar (gently) until the piston hits the stop. Make a mark on the balancer right at the 0 on the timing tab. Rotate the engine back the other way until the piston hits again. Make another mark. True TDC is exactly half way between the 2 marks.

Using a stop like Larry says is the best way. I was just saying, if it pinged lightly, but your light showed 20 initial, it is probably way off. To be sure though you might as well just do it the right way, and that's one thing we can scratch off the list.

wow wow wow...what about 20 initial? i have it set to 14 now for 36 total. ive had the car set to 18-20 initial at one point and i still have never heard my motor ping.

hopefully tomorrow night or monday i can install my jets and check to make sure its set to true tdc.

what are your thought of putting the 75's on the primary side when i take the carb off to install the 79's on the secondary side?

cray1801 Too much is just right.

Maybe this has been explained already but: if your dist. has 22 degrees (36-14) of mechanical advance you will need to limit it to about 12 degrees to run 20 degrees initial (20+12) to give you 32 total.

so im a bit lost. why would i be limiting my mechanical advance to run 20 initial? why would i run 20 initial when 10-14 is perfect?

If 10 to 14 initial gives you a good idle leave it there:) . With larger cams you would do this to get good idle.

The earlier statement was to point out that your total timing would be way too high if you tried 20 initial, possibly hurting your motor with detionation.

Thanks for clearin that up! Hopefuilly i can get the fresh jets in tonight. :beer

Yeah I didn't mean to make it so complex. Custom curving a distributor can get very involved. I've spun custom limiting bushings on the lathe, tig welded the advance slot shut, then hand filed until I had the advance I wanted.

Funny thing is that after all that, it likes so much initial that I just locked it all up, and run 28 degrees all the time. When I get the methanol hooked up, I might try 30.

thanks for the info on the poston intake,i was draining my wallet trying to figure out why all the money i put into the 350 didnt produce the power my car should have. should of went with TA before.

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

Go lower on the timing and turn the boost up. I tried the whole timing vs boost thing on my turbo Buicks, low timing and higher boost made more power every time. My GN with a stock motor was running 18 degrees total with the pump gas tune, and I was able to run 20-21 lbs of boost with zero detonation. Lots of fun on the street :TU:

So i removed my carb today to change my jets and i find 70s on the primary side and 73s on the secondary side...not the 72 and 75 advertised. What i ended up doing was putting the 73s on the primary side and 79s on the secondary side...i figured if running lean was my problem this would tell me. Took it out for a quick run in the 100 degree heat and saw similar results to the smaller jets...but its hard to tell with it bein over 100 outside. Ill have to go for another run later when it cool.

Hopefully tonight i can check for my true TDC tonight.

Also, when i had my carb off i took some pix of my intake. I know a while back their were some serious problems with the poston intake and my intake could be a possible reason as to why my powerband is low. How does it look?

Intake looks fine, I have never had a problem with the Poston intakes and many others have not either. I dyno tested a ported Poston intake with a mild 350 combo and it peaked in HP at 5600 rpms like most other 350s do. The fact is that neither the TA or Poston intake offers much over the stock intake other than lighter weight. Mike Williamson was running 11s NA with one, and mark has had no trouble with his either.

Have you checked to make sure the secondaries air flaps are opening at the right time? Also check that you have 100% full throttle as sometimes the throttle cable setup needs to be tweaked to get full throttle.

Have you got the float levels set?

Fuel should just start to trickle out the sight plug holes

HA HA! Check for full throttle! Can you imagine how dumb we're all gonna feel if that's it!? It's a common problem too.

I have checked and i am gettin full throttle. I adjusted my throttle cable perfectly.

I need to recheck my secondary float level, im sure my primary is good.
