when i installed the cam i put it at tdc and installed it. i did not use a degree wheel

Ok, well it should be close enough to make power. Something else must be wrong, fuel pressure at full throttle should be checked.

how do u suggest checking it under full throttle? i have a little guage under the hood. ive tried rigging it so i can see it from out of the hood but the hood seals tight and smashes the line

if it were losing its fuel at 4100 or when it falls it wouldnt just lose power but would for sure fall on its face and surge with fuel gone and then returning. Either the cam timing is off , or the carb is just jetted improper which is causing it to run most likely lean at that rpm. I would like to see the plugs after a full throtle run. kody knows what I think he should do.....also...if you have to advance the cam to gain some power...your comp ratio might a little low for that can being so far advancecd

On my 76 I was able to run the gauge up through the top of the hood and just shut the hood one click down not completely shut. I am not sure if this will work on your car but if not then maybe remove your hood for a quick run... make some marks around the hood with a pencil so you can re-align the hood after you put it back on.

I got my new plugs, wires, and msd coil in and i reduced my timing to 12 initial 34 total. ill let you know if it helps.

has anyone ever made 9.1 buick pistons? my engine was rebuilt in 2000 and the build sheet says it has 9.1 pistons. cant find anyone who makes them

I am not possitive but I think the stock low comp pistons (8.5:1) work out to be 9:1 in an early engine with steel shim gaskets. I have only seen one dish size on the low comp 350 pistons from any year but the deck heights were taller on the later engines as well as the head gaskets thicker.

after replacing my plugs, wires, coil and reducing my timing i saw no improvement. still makning peak hp at the same low rpms.

next test is fuel pressure i guess

what is your cold cranking cylinder pressure ?? have you done a test on that ?

no ive never tested it. how do i do that?

just using a compression tester you should determine which pistons you have .....with the high comp ones you should be 185+ lbs per cylinder

i rigged up a fuel pressure guage. at idle it hold a steady 6.5. when i punch it the lowest it goes is 3.5-4lbs.

well its a not fuel issue. its either my compression, cam, or carb... :blast:

i workn on getting a compression tester. any other suggestions?

cray1801 Too much is just right.

First gear goes much quicker and will be much less accurate than a 2nd or 3rd gear test pull. Try 2nd gear and see if the readings match. Third gear on the dyno would be best if you have few $$$.

What kind of g's do you get off the line on he street? I get .7 on the street and 1.2 at the strip (AP-22) performance meter. This peak g occurs right about take-off of course.

well guys i replaced my old qjet with a 770 holley street avenger (which i love) but it did not fix my problem.the car holds a constant 2-3 psi fuel pressure at wot. i am currently messing with spacers or no spacers on the poston intake to see what that will do.

my max g's are about .45 after take off.

    whats next to check?

PM me your number, I'll call you tonight when I get home from the track. I have a couple ideas to run past you and don't feel like typing that much. :TU:

well there is no difference in peak hp rpm with a 1in open spacer and no spacer. the 1in spacer did seem to add some throttle response.

i sprayed starter fluid all around where the carb mounts to the intake and the intake mouts to the block and i got no noticable increase in engine rpm.

i backed my timing down from 12 initial to 6 to see if there could have been a timing issue. i lost a lot of power and a full second on my 0-60 so that wasnt the problem.

as usual im still stumped and making peak hp between 4000 and 4200 rpms.

How is the carb jetted? If you make a full run and stay in it at the point where it tapers off, then immediately shut it down, you might be able to read the plugs some. If they are really light, or blistered, it could just need more secondary jetting.

A wideband kit would really help a lot, and have come down in price quite a bit.

    CARBURETOR # 0-80770
    PRIMARY METERING JET 72
    SECONDARY METERING JET 75
    PUMP DISCHARGE NOZZLE 0.025
    PRIMARY POWER VALVE 65
    SECONDARY DIAPHRAGM SPRING PINK

According to what artie has told me my jetting is a bit on the rich side. He suggests 68 primaries 72 secondaries and the lightest spring which i believe is pink.

Yeah, 75 is likely a bit big. Still doesn't seem enough to kill the top end so much though.
