    How about this...............

Seller posts a new for sale thread.
Only the seller can post to thread.
All enquiries are by PM directly to the seller.
He handles all the responses by PM.
If questions come up about condition, more pics or whatever, the seller can add the answers or pics to the thread.
When the part is sold the seller says so in the thread, or deletes thread altogether.

As someone who has bought/sold/traded all types of parts here, my experience has been relatively positive.

As a buyer, I dont say in Line unless I need further pictures, clarification, etc. I say, Ill take it a PM is then exchanged and money is sent/transferred at that moment. Its a done deal.

As a seller, Ive held parts for too long for someone that finally decided they didnt want the part or waited weeks for someone to get a paycheck, that part gets frustrating. Ive also received PMs about a part with that person not acknowledging his intention on my post. In that case I tell them to post to my ad before the conversation goes further.

Rules, there has to be but I dont think it needs to be overly complicated.

As a seller: An actuate description, price, location, shipping, and pictures. Dont hide the fact that theres a scratch, bend, or whatever that would distract value from the part. I know that good parts for our cars are getting harder to find and have seen this though the asking prices over the years. This is not the place for dishonest sellers, if youre trying to deceive go to Ebay. Get caught doing it, youre gone end of story.

As a buyer: Commit and buy the part, instantly. If you dont have the money available then you should not be trying to buy parts. Ive let things go, because the funds just were not available. Yes, I wanted it but sometimes its all about timing. Commit to buy and do so within 12 hours (Sometimes youre out, at work, whatever). Exceed this time frame, 1st offense warning, 2nd your gone.

As a side note, I dont sell here to make money and Ive sold parts for a lot less than market value to help the hobby, this should be the theme on this site. What to get market price, put it on Ebay. There are times when Ive overpriced an item and went back and asked for offers. Details on the sale should be handled through PMs or phone calls (I like this one the best even though no one seems to do this anymore?). Ive ended up trading stuff for stuff and in the end everyone is happy.

On occasion your good deal to someone gets flipped, it happens, let it go. All the parts Ive purchased, then another set, then another, trying to get the best I can find and then turn around and sell what I dont need to fund another part. This is an expensive hobby.

Im met a ton of good people here and cant imagine building my car without this community. :beer

This is exactly what I was going to write. As much as I like this site and as much as I understand the moderating headaches, I can't justify $50 for the privilege of selling something minor once every few years. Punish the offenders severely, not the innocent buyers and sellers.

The board mods would be going day and night trying to baby sit that, BUT this type of add where the seller controls everything about his add is already in place here on V8buick in the leads section. You just host your add else where and post it in the leads for sale.

I think changing what is working already for the huge majority here to a small hand full of people is wrong, lets face it the reason our classifieds work so well here is because most people feel a curtain amount of security and confidence in buying and selling because we as a group for the majority have and follow the rules that are already in place.

I think it runs as well as can be expected. Most of us don't play the behind the back PM games, but those that do and get caught should have some kind of penalty. There are plenty of us that will post a friendly "reminder" when someone posts something rule bending.
The 48 hours wait may seem like a long time but somebody like me,who is usually only online in the AM(no cell or tablet) may need that time to figure out fitment or application issues, ask for more pictures.Or to rifle thru our stash to see what we forgot we already have.:pp
If Jim sees a need to charge a fee,it's his site & he can do it.It would be a shame,I hope it doesn't come to that.
Hopefully we can move ahead as normal & this thread will be a wakeup call to the cheaters out there.:spank:

It's the people who ask, Is it dented? What Color is it? Does it run? Will it fit on my Car? that think it puts them "In Line". It doesn't. "PM Sent" shouldn't either. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. There will always be arguing.

I believe the site works well. There will always be a few mistakes that people should be able to discuss between themselves and resolve. Where I see problems is that some people think flaming each other in back and forth posts is OK. Unhappy with the transaction leave feedback. We as a society love to be the victim instead of working things out in a reasonable way.
As a mostly seller cleaning out 40 years of collecting stuff, and as a sometime buyer for things. And for the reams of great information, I feel it my responsibility to contribute to this site. Hence I am a Platinum Contributor. I don't believe we should charge for people to post for sales.
I do believe that like other boards you should have a minimum number of posts before you are able to post for sales. That would keep transients from jumping on just to sell an item.

When selling on line there is often questions about quality/condition, age use etc etc that is part of selling on line. How anyone would or could expect someone to send you money with out asking these things its beyond me. Its not like seeing it in person.

But there are some people that post before they think.

Agreed 100%. Most folks go out of their way to offer great descriptions and photos, including info about what's NOT so great about what they're selling.

Other folks write one sentence advertisements for their stuff with no photos, don't bother to state price/location, what have you. Of course I'll be happy to reply with interest when the item(s) are something I want or need, but I'm not going to blindly commit to a purchase without knowing more about what I'm buying.

And there will always be buyer complaints even when a seller has gone out of their way to show everything clearly in photos and description, but thankfully that's rare.

It's almost like a tragic comedy sometimes too; we have members who complain loudly when ebay's rules are broken because their pictures were stolen and used inappropriately, then turn around and complain about having to follow the rules here on v8buick.com. Give me a break.

Apparently, it does put them in line according to the rules. Merely asking a question about the item for sale constitutes "interest" in said item. This is something I just learned after the recent controversy in the valve covers for sale thread. I think therein lies the problem. Now that the rule has some "air time" I have a better understanding of what "in line" means. Maybe others that have been following this thread will too.

 That is too Funny, as soon as I read this I knew right away who you are talking about:laugh:

---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:51 PM ----------

As long as it is related to the sale and not just idle chit chat It has to be this way and yes that is the way the rule was designed to work. I would rather people say they are interested then say they "want it" only to back out. Asking questions show the intent to buy. Remember, this is one line not over the phone or a swap meet so you have to start somewhere.

Just as it in on the H.A.M.B.
It doesn't get any easier, or clearer.

I've followed a few for sale ads here that had so many interested parties that due of the sheer number of replies going back and forth stating,
    "I'm interested"
    "PM sent"
    "I'm next in line"
"Next in line if so and so passes"
    "I'll pass"
    "How much to ship to?"
"Are you saying you are in line?"
"Only if whats his name passes"
"I'm still in line, just gotta balance the check book"
    So on and so forth.

It doesn't take long and they begin to read like Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" bit. If I were the seller I would be nervous about selling it to someone out of the proper order.
It has happened, and then a flaming thread gets posted by the disrespected potential buyer. All over an honest mistake.

I can't say I have had anything but positive experiences buying and selling here though.

H.A.M.B. also has a "bad seller list"

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=101178

    Here are their Rules:

Re: READ THIS FIRST!!! The Classified Rules - INTROS NO LONGER REQUIRED!!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CARS for sale
Each item listed must include at least a body and a rolling frame. Cars and Trucks only.

THE CUTOFF IS 1964. Unless the vehicle shares the EXACT same body style. NO VW'S or Mustangs. There are plenty of other sites for them.

NO POSTS FOR TITLES WANTED OR FOR SALE ARE ALLOWED ON THE HAMB.
    NO EXCEPTIONS !!!!

THE HAMB IS NOT A RAT ROD SITE. RAT RODS ARE NOT TRADITIONAL HOT RODS. IF YOU HAVE TO ASK - SIT BACK AND READ THE HAMB A WHILE BEFORE POSTING.

    YOU MUST INCLUDE PRICES.
The price must be in the price category. If you are selling multiple items put listed in the price box. Just want to trade? List it in the Wanted section with TRADE in the title.
Every item for sale must be listed and every item listed must have a price. If you are parting out a car you must list the big items, with prices. You should request that interested parties Private Message (PM) or EMAIL you with other parts requests. If your Private Messages or email is disabled your ad will be deleted. New users must introduce themselves in the intro forum.

YOUR AD MUST INCLUDE THE CITY AND STATE.
Yes, we realize that your profile may include it but it also may not. This is an attempt for us to cut down on spammers and protect YOU. We dont want to have to check each ad to see if its in the profile so fill out the little box and save us all some grief.

    The 3 Day Bump Rule
A seller may not bump their ad any sooner than three days since the last time THEY bumped it. Please respect your fellow HAMBers. This little rule was put into effect to keep people from bringing their ad back to the top (BTTT) in a manner detrimental to other ads. Should a seller think of something to add before the 3 days is up they may do so by editing their previous post. Vague ads may be closed or deleted at our discretion.

No CRAIGSLIST, or links to other general listing sites.
When you list something on the HAMB you are accepting FULL RESPONSIBILITY for the transaction, just as if you were selling it yourself. If the listing is for a friend you better make damn sure theyre a good one. Links to other web-sites full of off topic or questionable material may be removed at our discretion. If thats all the ad contains it will be removed all together.

YOUR AD MUST BE IN THE CORRECT CATEGORY.
Mis-categorized items may be moved or deleted at our discretion and convenience.

THE CLASSIFIED AD POSTS ARE SET UP THAT ONLY SELLERS CAN POST ADDITIONS TO THEIR ADS. BUYERS CAN NOT POST ON A SELLERS AD

BUYERS IF INTERESTED IN A ITEM - SEND THE SELLER A PRIVATE MESSAGE.

Also - We have a commercial section called the HAMB O DEX for business to advertise their products- dealership. Contact FLAT Top BOB before posting in the HAMB O DEX- there are requirements. Commercial car dealers seem to want to post all their inventory in the classifieds and crowd the individual guys out, so we watch for that.

"Smart Assing", "Ball Busting", and straight up whining will not be tolerated. We'll delete it. If we delete it a lot, you'll be banned.

By posting here, you agree to allow us to edit your ad to fit the editorial focus of this site.

Feeling lippy? Want to take it out on a Moderator? Well DON'T. We all volunteer to do this and we won't take any lip. This place is free, the rules are the rules and you can either play by them or hit the pike. Send any of us a smart ass PM or make a smart ass post and you're gone.

Think you can rip a HAMB member off and get away with it? Your personal information will be posted on the Bad Sellers List.

  16. TROSE11SECGN

    TROSE11SECGN Boost is my drug

Problem is now more than ever smart phones are replacing printed materials for cars and parts for sale. Hemmings has survived but for how long. Take a look at a gsxtra lately? Very few classified ads, 25 years ago, was the only thing out there, now all over the internet. I see it daily in selling cars. I close deals daily with text messages and people sending me their credit information or bank/account info and doing purchases completely over text messaging. Generations now more than ever wish to not even make contact with a person they want to do the whole process via email or text and come in to sign and drive away. GM testing a new system in Michigan as we speak similar to what I described in the above paragraph. Sign of the times.

Im not a purchaser of much on here as im not a performance shop or restorer. But I have done well in selling cars on here as I have sold 3 Buicks within the past 2 years and 2 were buyers from Europe who wasted no time in purchasing the cars sight unseen based on camaraderie and trust. Plus i have sold other vehicles on here because people on here have sent me referrals who ended up buying the cars. I sent them pictures, they asked questions I answered , money wired, transaction done. Both have been in the Buick game for a while, one was probably the oldest member of the GSCA from Europe. Both cars sold within several hours of being posted on here. I also had people pm me about holding checks and paying monthly on a car. Both these cars cost money but not for all the money in the world such as a 60k GSX or 92k Stage 1 convertible. The name of the game is honesty and trust, paramount foundation from anything in business to relationship to friendship. Ball busting and low ball offers I cant take because I deal with it daily more so than probably 95 percent of the people employed on this board. So if someone says inline and low balls you and I have a person calling me directly saying I want the car whats your routing/account number im at the bank, who do you think I would pick? First in line goes out the window if the person is going to try and beat you down in price just for you to see it pop on ebay a week later in both parts and cars for sale. if they post publicly on the post their offer and I reject it and move on that would curtail the lowballers and make the buyers realize the $$ amount they could offer to get that specific part or car and also show people who they may want to avoid in doing transactions with based on their previous performance. Would keep it really honest and may make people feel awkward about offers but it would cut down on the back and fourth shady dealings that people on here speak of on here or various instances of favoritism.

Now flip side is if someone posts and the first reply asks for pictures on cd and the ad gives the seller's phone number and someone calls me with an offer on the phone even though he is not first in line. Well seller can take the second persons money or tell them hold on tell the first guy I have money on the line from a guy who wants it what would you like me to do? Put the ball in the buyers court and it either $$ up to buy it or stay on the porch. Nowadays selling a car whether in person at dealership or BJ/Mecum relies heavily on adrenaline and impulse. You run your car Saturday night at BJ in Scottsdale and money is up and adrenaline too , well odds are you are in good shape to sell that vehicle bc timing and impulse is right. Say the first guy says I need a disc of pictures and you take them and he takes a week for you to reply and then all the rush of buyers goes away and now the seller is upset because you cost him the sale by taking your jolly time and tying up the process. Also the seller has to be responsible too and track progress of the posts replying to their sales so everyone is on same playing field. If they don't penalize the seller. I live and die on my phone but realize not everyone is like me retired or employed. But sitting at a desk with 3 computer monitors makes it easy for me to monitor whats going on:laugh:

This is a catch 22 no matter what you do in these situations. My motto is always cash is king. When we sell cars, we tell them deposit ensures your the new owner as I do not hold cars I sell them. If you cant commit to signing that then car is not yours and will remain up for sale. Banks ask for money down when buying a house, if you are serious put the money down and save the rest of people who want to buy the issues of flaking out and costing the seller a sale. If its a war for a particular car or part and people are posting within minutes well first crack gets a shot unless the offer is insultingly low or the person says I don't want it, pass to next. Posting publicly the offers would reduce a lot of issues and frustration that is for sure and may keep people inline who would otherwise lowball to rethink their offer since people will be watching as well as remind them about reputation that this community is so close its like incest.

I know my friend took a lot of slack over a recent GS for sale but I have known him for well over a decade and he is as serious a buyer of everything GS/TR related that there is, whether cars or parts. If he asks about it he has the money to back it up. The seller wasn't cooperative and said up front he is not on this site much and gave his #. To that guy cash is king as well but he could have handled it a lot better and been up front with everyone.

Same for Herb. He if anyone has helped many people out (me included) and above and beyond what makes him impressive to me (as a personal friend of mine for only a few years) is his word is his bond, when he says something he will do it and get it done, you don't have to nag or pester him, and that HE DOES NOT ASK for ANYTHING in return. That is a stand out individual. A few others on here like that as well, like CP, DL, JKC, Joe C, etc.... Many more I could list as well. Their reputation precedes them.

JW I give you a lot of credit for dealing with this, not an easy one part answer. Still remember you helping with my buddy Justin Wolf's trans issues in his GN in '98 at BG. Spot on sir!

    Wow, good response..

Guys.. we are going to leave things be for a while, and see what happens.

Be nice, that is all you have to remember.

I think that reduction of waiting time for "in line" members, having to post at least 3 pics of the part, and requiring certain key words in a reply to a for sale ad, have merit, and should be considered further.

There will continue to be no charge to use V8buick.com. classifieds.

Jim, that sounds like a good idea! I have bought a few things from some of the people in this thread and it has always been a great experience. "In line" seems to work since there may be a question the buyer has that was not addressed in the ad. It sounds like you are on on track to massage the rules and make it work for everyone. Good luck! :beers2:

Ive been Zoomed on three cars myself over the years . As mentioned above if you're selling local Or by any other means the Ad should be in Leeds . That would Alleviate some confusion, as to WHO you're actually selling to .

And when you make the decision to sell, you should already have photos and complete information available for buyers.

Like Mark, I belong to other paid forums , but we have very few guys who sell a volume of parts ( George N ) for instance is almost always smalls stuff and I would not want to alienate those guys.

Like moderator George told me. what are we going to do ban The guy that already sold his car?? Likely won't be back anyways .
