Nice. Would you mind telling us your name? I like to know who i'm talking with. Everyone here is on first name basis. Or just put it in your sig.

And where are some pictures of your car and progress?

  2. Joe
was your car missing the original 3.36 rear?

Well i'm not sure. I'm still trying to figure it out. It didn't have the rear it is supposed to. But when I got my seals, they fit in the rear that was in the car.?

So I been trying to get more info but it's so hard on these 65's. I was able to locate a 65 GS rear and it's coming but the one that came in the car is reassembled and completley redone with a new posi and ring and pinion. And it's on the frame too. And if I might say so looks beautiful!!

    So the mystery goes on.

My name is Vince. My car just came back from paint so I've got to sort through the pics. Its been a 10 year project with all sorts of twist and turns. I'm planning on starting a thread telling the story and officially showing her off soon. I attached a couple of pics before and after. The primer pic was in May of this year and the paint pic was taken last Sunday. Flame red 4-speed.

    Vince it looks incredible!!!

I look forward to this 10 year story. Absolutly start a thread for all of us to see. Is your interior red also?

Makes me want to get mine back in paint!! Although I only unassembled it a little over a month ago. Freaking one piece trunk pan is like $600 give or take $100 including shipping. Thats my road block at the moment!!

Also I started a new thread asking about the section between the bottom of the rear windshield and the top of the trunk opening area. Once I get these 2 parts i'm really going to jam on the body. Mt buddy allready came today to pick up the 2 inner fenderwells and when I get them back in a few days, he'll take the fenders and rad support.

    Thanks,

My car didn't need much welding/patching, just a couple little patches right behind the rear wheelwells. Floors and trunk are original. My friend and I completed the body work and paint including the frame and suspension in 6 1/2 months. Hopefully this weekend I will have some time to write up the 10 year project history and attach additional pics.

Could be. Wagon rears used the bigger wheel bearings just like the GS....which would mean hd axles too...just like the GS.
Wagons had wider brake shoes with different brake backing plates.
not sure if the control arm brackets are the same between wagons and GS.
I do have a 67 wagon rear that has different brackets than my 65-66 rears.

It's very possible the original rear blew up in the past 43 years, and was swapped out without Jeff knowing about it.

I have a question, Joe. You said "I got another 2.6 turn lock to lock NPD 65 chevelle box for the GS."
I would love to have quicker steering, but I love the old "finger touch" PS that came stock on the 65 Specials. Does that box have a firmer feel or would I still get that "wheels-in-the -air" feel and 2.6 turns? Also, what do those boxes cost and are they a straight bolt-in?
I finally got my wagon here in Florida and around Christmas time I'm going to dig in. Not a frame off but way more than a wash and a wax job. It has been really informative following this thread. Thanks for letting us follow along. :TU:
Here's a shot of my recent arrival:

Yea i'm not sure Walt. The tubes on my rear are bigger than the 65GS rear. Remember you asked me if they flared out at the ends? The whole tube is the size of the flared out part. And there's only 1 or 2 marking on the whole rear end. I'll get those markings tomorrow and post em.

And i'm telling you, the rear was in the same condition as the rest of the car. To me it looks original. I'm thinking Jeff saw it the same way, but it would be nice to get a response from him.

Vince, I am really looking forward to your story now. It's good to have friends.

Jeff that thing is hot. Better protect that gorgous rear bumper and section. These parts are very hard to find. Damn that side is clean!!!! There doesn't seem to bo any rust?!?!? Show us more in the "Show Us Your 64 65's". I'll go bring it to the top.

Now the box from NPD is a direct bolt in. Get yourself a pitman arm puller and do it in a couple hrs. You might want to grab a new rag joint while your there.:TU: I think it is 219.00 plus a deposit on your core that they refund you when they get your old box. Very smooth box but it is alot tighter in the sense that the wheel won't drift. I swear I can corner on a dime with these units. Like I said before, Probably the best couple hundred I ever spent on these old rides. Great investment, inexpensive and tons of result!!!! I wouldn't have it any other way. If I could mount one on my Asstro van I would!!!!:beers2:

    Hey Joe!

Sorry to bug ya... but I need clarification too. My Skylark has the stock steering box... turns with a pinky's worth of effort but doesn't drift in any way. It's not 'loose' and is immediately responsive, just not as as sensitive as a 12:1. My Lemans drifts a little, and the Mustang hops all over the place... but that's a topic for somewhere else.

So the question is... will it still be super easy pinky steerable (but with less rotations L2L) or will it feel'firm like a newer car?

    Hope that makes sense.

    Jeff ~

I just got it home and will post more pics next week. It has 72,000 original miles but was not pampered. Runs great. Practically no rust. Interior is dirty but almost no wear.
