Jim has an excellent point regarding the industrial revolution. I recall seeing a glass factory ad (PPG IIRC) looking for workers to settle in the US and work at their factory along the banks of the Allegheny River. An invitation if you will.

Back in the day, people came here and assimilated. They changed thier names to sound more American, they learned English and adopted our culture. Not so much anymore.

Its not only the amount of legal immigrants and those coming across the border illegally, its also the of refuges being accepted added on top of that. The current administration has pledged to re-settle 125K for the fiscal year of 2022. Neary 50K of them are from Afghanistan. 353 Afghans have already been sent to Buffalo and NY State has already spent $2M to resettle more throughout the state. Meanwhile there are homeless people living all over. NY State always has a budget deficit every year even with some of the highest taxes in the country so they don't have extra money to spend.

The Buffalo school system deals with 82 different languages since they tend to resettle all different nationalities in the city. That puts a huge strain on an already sub-par school system that spends on average 18K per student.

We had a large group of Burmese refuges working in our plant, they were typically good workers, 8 of them would crowd in one car to come to work and many of them lived together. But, they knew how to play the system by turning down the company provided health care and going on the NY State plan for free. The NYS plan is a Cadillac plan far better than what I had. Somehow they were also receiving public assistance for food and housing, the US citizen workers on the same line were not.

I am not anti immigration, legal immigration is good as long as they do not become wards of the system, but as mentioned above it needs to be looked at logically and not with a bleeding heart that we have to help everyone in the world while our country goes to crap. We are not the same country that we were at the turn of the centry when the immigration system was strong and truly necessary. Those that are trying to come here legally through the immigration system must be pissed seeing what is currently going on along the southern border.

The anchor baby law needs to go also.

That's exactly what they did here. Built a city funded "rescue mission" out in a former cotton ginning area that is now light industrial and warehousing. There is a "tent city" next to the rescue mission. The residents spill out into the adjacent neighborhoods during the day, some are pushing carts. They built a lot of fancy sidewalks, and landscaping on both Valley Dr and Avenida de Mesilla, near the Interstate, that only the homeless and their carts now use. Am not sure if most, or any of them are pursuing employment. Also not sure if a "regular" resident would wish to use the sidewalks due to the homeless populations congregating on them.

    Acceptance..... this is where i am now. we as a nation have past the point of no return. not a unusual situation if you think about it a while. every great empire/super power has a short lifespan 300-500 years. i am not saying america cant be saved. but to do so would mean HARD decisions would have to be made and FOLLOWED through. my guess is that 75% of americans could not stomach the hard changes needed to save america. its a shame but 100%true. i actually like helping others but will not ever help someone that will not help and sacrifice for themselves. america as a whole has become soft and greedy over the years. its really a shame as this land of ours here is rich in soil/oil/iron/coal. at one time we made built 95% of what we needed to live and prosper. we threw it all away on the mighty $$$$. over the last 30 years most people have let there children become soft. i hear people say that the way things are going if were not careful we will become a 3 world country. i tell them OPEN your eyes and look around we are a 3 world country. i dont feel bad for myself, i am 54 years old. but i do feel bad for my childrens future. I can allways hope that maybe the few hard americans can make the others see the light! GOD BLESS AMERICA! {was that last sentence too much............ hell no lol}

If you want a broad view of immigration (2020 report) this is a good resource. By default, a little dated, as the data trials a year or two.... Very interesting read https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/08/20/key-findings-about-u-s-immigrants/ Here's an interesting fact... Asians are projected to become the largest immigrant group in the U.S. by 2055, surpassing Hispanics. Pew Research Center estimates indicate that in 2065, those who identify as Asian will make up some 38% of all immigrants; as Hispanic, 31%; White, 20%; and Black, 9%.

Getting back on topic here, not sure how we got to immigration since 99.9% of the beggars I have seen are white and the ones I have spoken to don't have a foreign accent. They have either quit enforcing the law or changed it, that is why there are so many beggars. Anybody over 40 should be able to remember when panhandling was illegal, what happened to that law is it gone or just not enforced? You can say there isn't enough room for all the beggars in the jails which is probably true, but only because it was allowed to go unchecked. Does anybody think that these people would be begging if there were consequences?

I steered the conversation that way. More strain on resources equates to a more disheartened people. Translation = more disillusioned, more drugs, more destitution, and more dependency.

Actually there are few laws that restrict panhandling anymore. Most of them have been struck down by the courts, as it is protected speech under the first amendment.

Usually when the cops try and clear an area, the laws against Loitering are then enforced.

Honestly, I don't know Brian.. no one on my Father's side of the family that was still alive by the time I showed up, spoke German. My Great Grandfather had no interest in teaching his children anything other than English. My Grandfather, his son, was born in 1908 in NYC and never spoke German. When I asked him why, he gave me the above answer.

I never even knew about my last name, until my Aunt did a ancestry chart some years ago.

Here is one thing auto related.. My Great Grandfather was a automotive and Marine engine Machinist in NYC. It was told to me by my Grandfather that his shop was one of the first, if not the first on the East Coast, to overbore cylinder blocks for rebuilding. This would have been in the 19 teens or twenties I suspect. I think the shop was actually in NJ..

My dad was actually born in NYC, and lived there until they moved to MPLS after WW2. Gramps was a Seebee in the Navy and did not get discharged until 1946, as they were rebuilding bridges in SE Asia that were destroyed during the war. By the time he was discharged in San Diego, all the jobs were taken, as were all the Jobs back east.. so since my Grandmother was originally from Minneapolis, they moved back here. They must have hung on for a few year out east, as my Grandmother was fond of telling the story about how my dad would get in trouble for swimming in the East River.. Him and his buddies would strip down to their underwear and go swimming, but the river would discolor their white underwear so bad, my dad would throw them away to keep from getting caught. Which worked great, till he ran out of underwear..

So I missed being a "California boy" by thaaat much..

Now back to our regularly scheduled bitch session... :D

Thats interesting Jim. I think sometimes that mechanical ability is passed down.

My grandfather was a railway coach builder in London in the turn of the century. My father was born in 1913 btw

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Immigrants remain the hardest working people in our country. It's completely false to suggest these people just want to leach off the system. They come here to work and they work VERY hard.

You will get no argument from me on that.. The Mexicans that roofed and sided my house this year worked like dogs.. Funny, the only guy we dealt with that spoke English was the owner of the outfit that did our insurance work. Also got a brand new steel roof on the shop..

Now I just have to figure out a way to build a hail shield over the house.. After that 50+ K claim, I thought 2 things..

    1. Man, am I in the wrong business.. they made a ton of money on this job.. They might have had 100 man hours on this job.. maybe..

    2. If we have another insurance claim.. ever.. they will drop us like a hot rock..
