I am not sure if they have changed but at one time Sandy was not going to be even named as a Hurricane when it makes landfall. So the scale they are using would make Sandy a 0 Category. But the chances of their being flooding is high.

They just said a Huricane Hunter found there are tropical storm force winds extending for a 900 mile diameter which per Bryan Norcross is a record distance. And the storm surge expert on the Weather Channel who was once with the National Hurricane Center calculates this will be the highest storm surge ever for NYC and this goes all the way back to the 19th Century. NYC hits hit so seldom that it is hard for people living today to have a fame of reference for this. But ithis means it would be greater than the great New England Hurricane of 1938. Look what happened in 1938.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_Hurricane Once you read what happened in 1938 you can see what a very serious situation this is for the whole New England area.

Please... don't anyone that is in the path of this storm take it lightly. I live here in Bedford, PA. (southcentral) and I usually have no problems this far inland but like many I have been watching this. I am not a 'preparedness fanatic' but this could be nasty for a very large amount of NE areas. I have filled jugs of water, gotten my cordless light batteries charged, put ice bags in the freezer for later use if needed and gotten kero for a heater and kerosene lamps. Just the basics in case of power failure. Be prepared for the worst. Even if turns out to be less of an impact than they are saying, it is much better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes to all in the Northeast.

Long Island Sound and Battery Park are now estimated to have a storm surge of 6 to 11+ feet.

Boats out of the water and inland.
Its gonna be bad at our house near the beach. Old-timers down in Sea Isle who were around for the 62' storm say they haven't been this afraid since then. I'm a block from the beach at best and my house is on 6f high foundation. It all buttoned up wait and see now. Hope to get on the island by Friday.
Glad my sons had hockey games today kept my mind off the storm.
Good to go here in Cherry Hill, Generator is set and kids are having fun already off school till Wednesday for now.
    Be safe!

x2..... I have a couple frozen milk jugs of water in the freezer to keep food cold in case of power failure..... very likely considering PECO's record.

Have firewood for the wood stove, water, beer, but no Jenifer. :Do No:. My in/out cat Annie is indoors as is the visiting stray Trexler, so they're safe.
I'm working second shift this week and expect power outages to have an effect....but I bet that won't happen until I get there and clock in.:moonu:
My creek will flood, but that's far from my house...no worries. Wind could be a problem, we'll see.
Flooding is going to be a big issue to communities in my area..... this is gonna be the 5th '100 year flood' in the last decade.... time to 'recalibrate'.

I'm still out here in Sag Harbor on the south fork of L.I..

Took a tour yesterday and don't look good. The ocean was way up to the dunes and was very nasty, lots of rolling waves comming in.
We stopped by my daughters on the north fork in Jamesport and the fire department came through their lane and told us it was a mandatory evac.
She owns two houses on the Bay. The water at low tide was at their sea wall at about 5pm and the high tide was to be about 11pm last night.
They are talking storm surge highs of about 10' over there for Monday eve. They will definately see flooding over there.

My wife and I are 687' off the main road back in the woods so we don't worry about flooding, but we have lots of trees that have fallen across our driveway in the past and they can trap us back here. Right now is decision time. I think we will leave before the power goes out (always does) and head back into the city. Doesn't look any better there either.

    Will keep you posted.

The storm is hitting us around 4 today. It is scary calm out there now. Thankfully we wont be hit as bad as others but they are projecting 4-8 inches of rain, 70 mph winds, and power outages up to 10 days. Be safe everyone!

damn .. stock exchange closed. I was going to buy a couple hundred shares each of Home Depot and Lowes :Do No::idea2::Do No:

So far just alot of strong wind here and according to the news updates it hasn't even been blowing strong compared to whats ahead. 50-70mph sustained is forcasted for hours on end. Where I am on the northshore of L.I. we are pretty high up (wiki lists it at 223') so Im not worried about the surge of water which WILL set records in the L.I. sound.

Work is closed - I work in Manhatten and with the Long Island RailRoad and the NYC Subways shut down there's really no way for me to get into Manhatten anyway.

I'll prolly take a drive later on today to the north shore Beaches just for a look and take some pics.
