Nice, considering they show multi billion quarterly profits...

.....$5.60 billion in the quarter, up from $2.39 billion in the same period of 2009, thanks to higher oil and gas prices.

I guess you missed my post about the discussion of global warming and climate change legislation also being just as buick related.

You do know what comes out of your buick as well as what goes into it, right? :Do No:

Personally I would like to see the "buick related" requirement of the bench removed, Jason. But if it stays I would appreciate its enforcement by the moderators to be fair. That is my point.

This is one of many prices we all pay because we enjoy our lifestyles.

My internet connection, like those of our media providers, is evidence. I don't know how mine is powered, be it coal, oil, nuclear, wind, solar etcetera. Were it not for that I couldn't write here.

We all demand this source of energy so we can drive new and old cars, air condition our homes, enjoy lights and eat in a well lit restaurant when it's dark outside.

A catosrophic event at one site or another is going to happen. Three Mile Island and Chernobyl happened because we like our lifestyles, but we DEMAND the energy. This oil tragedy may affect us for a very, very long time. There will be many others that are yet to come.

We simple-mindedly trust that there is no risk in our day-to-day lives, ridiculous!

We must drill here and there, it's unavoidable. We need it.

Your posting here using a desktop computer, laptop, cell phone or iPad proves it.

    It sucks, but it's true.

We did it to ourselves and we'll keep doing it.

P.S. I'm posting from the garage after realizing I'd left the lights on while I was inside for a few hours. Damn.

P.S. Ran in to check on the wife, back out to get my laptop, need the thing for tomorrow. Seeing now that I left two other lights on, I'm an idiot.

Hope you don't mind, I'm going to use some more power to keep my alarm clock and phone working. Oh, forgot about the humidifier for the bedroom.

    Sorry!

Yeah, I was a little off-base on my quoting of "The Bench" description. Yet, I maintain the purpose of "The Bench" is to include discussions that aren't necessarily purely automotive related.

The book I mentioned in my post above was titled, I think, A Demon Of Our Own Design by Richard Bookstaber. It focuses on disasters in the financial arena but I believe in developing that story the author makes some interesting analogies/comparisons to other highly complex systems and failures there.

Reading this morning, there are some press reports out now putting this spill in context with other past spills. At this point, this one is child's play compared to the Ixtoc I Rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 1979 which spilled an estimated 141 MILLION gallons. Also, not yet closely comparable to the Valdez spill. A big part of the ultimate onshore damage will be determined by sheer luck (or lack thereof) as wind currents, etc come into play.

Finally, before this is over it may turn out that all this was a result of shoddy work (ie trying to do something on the cheap) instead of some complex series of events. You've probably already heard the accusations that Halliburton may have done a "short" cement job on the well casing, etc. Who knows?? It'll probably all come out in court.

I remember the Ixtoc incident. It took them months to cap it. Something
like over 100 miles of Texas beaches were tarnished, not to mention the
    damage to wildlife.

Here's the scary part of Ixtoc compared to Horizon - if you look at this
screen capture (a google map) - the red "pin" (marked 'A') at the bottom
of the map ... that's where Ixtoc was located - see how far the oil floated
to get to Texas? Now think about the Horizon oil spill.

I read this morning that BP is drilling a relief well to cap this one.

    EDIT:
Located here are various maps showing just how many rigs at in the G.O.M.

I feel ya!:TU: (others are just soo dang anal about it though):Dou:

Ted you were correct in your numbers of 70mil cap. They are passing law right now to update that to 80 BIL RETROACTIVELY!!!!

All yesterday trailers passed down my way carrying boom. The locals are eating up oysters at the famous places like there is no tomorrow(Casementos,Acme,Pascal's etc.) :)shock: )
Some neighbors have been out at night shrimping in their smaller boats to stock up. I can't go due to a new job, but will be hooked up w/ several hundred pounds of seafood.:) for the freezer. (this is all on the "inside" of the fisheries). If(when) it gets into the interior were screwed-and unlubed.
And please don't think this will affect us alone. Just wait. This will be very bad for the economy of the USA:(

They have wildlife and fisheries and state troopers are stopping recreational fishers already!!!!!!! (INSIDE TOO-not tied off some rig in the gulf):af:

Transocean, which lost 4 men have decided to stop all bonuses. :idea2:
One lawsuit states that they rushed to get crew on the rafts, but decided to keep men on the rig as it burned and sank as their friends watched in horror.
My uncle Kieth spoke to my cousin from his rig and the men are taking it bad out there, but must keep on keeping on......:ball:

I was just about to renew my license soon too.... It's kind of ironic as we have fortified the levees and pump station and finally had the delta and marshes on the "to do" list.

More when I'm off from work....

can't fish 1 mile from home. No oil there either. As a matter of fact, if it WERE in Bayou Bienvenue, it would be time to turn out the lights.
It is gonna take a toll on a bunch of sates.Mark my words.:Smarty:

For the record I live in St. Bernard Parish-if you've heard that name.....:(

One GREAT thing is that all from the area are offering to and helping any way they can. The crazy coon-assse are working hand in hand with the Cambodians and Vietnamese trying to help protect their way of life.:beer

I was going to go with my friend out of Hopedale, but they have deemed his 25 ft. shrimp boat too small to be of any service:Dou: . Keep in mind they DO need his expertise in all of the "cuts" and inlets even if he can't drag boom.

It's nice Bp took the time to paint their cofferdam before loading it for it's journey. Gotta look good in the pics for the boardroom!:bglasses: :af:

Maybe we should move this thread to the "Help frome Above" section, that way no-ones' panties will be in a bunch, and we can all commiserate with our buick brother, as his life will undoubtedly be affected.

Judging from the looks of things, we will NEED help from above to stop this leak. (plus there is no stipulation in the "help from above" forum that it's buick related, mmkay?)

BP is shipping spill response materials from here (Prudhoe Bay) to the gulf. I'm assuming those truckers wont get their logs checked. Its only 4900 miles

Re: Free Oil!!!!! Come Get'cha Free Oil!!!!

There is a provision with the FMCSR part 395 for emergencies, which essentially permits a professional truck driver to exceed the hours of service rules.

    Read here > http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu...=090163348002389c&keyword=declared emegencies

This exception provision covers parts 390 to 399. You might not be aware that Alaska has its own set of rules governing truck drivers hours of service that differ from mainland USA.

I would be interested to find out if the exceptions would apply within Canada, since these loads will pass through here.

I've never seen anything pulled from here JUST because it was not Buick related.. You can even ask a Chevrolet question or a question about lawn care.. As long as it doesn't become an argument, it will be just fine..

Have been following this sad sad story with great interest. Good idea to contain the leak with the square "funnel"....and pump to the surface.
Now the question is....how could they heat the box to prevent the ice crystals??:idea2:
How 'bout wrapping the exterior with a coil of insulated pipes c/w a layer of insulation (incased with another layer of concrete/steel) and pump down under pressure, a super heated water/glycol mix? Like the 'ole fuel "Cool Cans" that I used to use to cool my fuel charge when I raced.....It's just a thought.....but instead of cooling they're heating!
I'm sure this square "funnel" will work....just have to keep it warm enough to stop the ice crystal formation....
Any engineers on this board with any ideas:idea2:I'm sure BP will be open to any advice....I know the whole world sure will be!
