Does pertronix change your firing order...?

Hearing stories like Nick's makes me happy I never changed mine over. I always keep a spare points and condenser in my glove box. Why re invent the wheel?

Adrian, if you were having cold starting problems, I highly doubt it was because of moisture. I suspect that the electronic ignition will not cure that. Think about it, that car was in daily service for years and years with points.

Thanks for the info...what does one of those HEI's run for anyway?
Oh and your quote on your signature is probably one of the best things ive ever read

hmmm...good point. What do you think it was? Not trying to put you on the spot...just wondering if you had an idea so i dont have to deal with having to get a jump to start my car on cold mornings again.

just as an FYI, the caddy engines dont share the conventional GM firing order. They are 1-5-6-3-4-2-7-8.

Ade, you should pull the #1 spark plug, put your thumb over (not IN!) the hole and have someone bump the starter until you feel the blast of air come out. Then look at the harmonic balancer and get the timing mark to point at zero. Then pull the distributor cap. Wherever the rotor is pointing is where the #1 spark plug wire should plug in to the cap. Usually just to the left of the window. Then go CLOCKWISE around the cap... 18436572. Follow each wire and make sure it goes to the right plug.

Thats the plan Stan! Err umm...Yardley

And with what I asked Buick 64023...any suggestions?

Its difficult to determine without seeing the problem. If it were my Riv, the first thing I would do is check the general state of tune. Check for worn ignition parts. Adjust the timing. Adjust the mixture screws on the carb and see what kind of vacuum reading Im getting. Put the "Jay Cook supertune" on it

Once the basics are gone through, the choke needs to be adjusted. If the problem still exists after all that, you would at least be abe to zero in on it better.

Isnt this what Larry said before all this started?

Yeah and I did all that stuff...
As far as things looking old...the only thing I could think of would be the spark plug wires (are the way expensive ones really worth it?)...or battery cables
    Good idea to replace?

When you get your car back, take a squirt bottle with water and spray the wires with water while the car is running. See if it starts to misfire or run poorly. Ive actually stalled out engines with that test because of bad wires.

Get a good brand like Standard. Expect to pay $60-$70. Stay away from the Autozone 19.99 el cheapo wires.

Cookie - Points suck. You know it, now embrace that fact. If not, I'll send someone to your house with a pipe and have him whack your boney knees till you scream points suck.

With that administrative problem out of the way. . .
As stated to you, young Aid, when you first started messing with the car, CAP, ROTOR, PLUGS AND WIRES! This is stuff you can do yourself. Now give yourself a slap in the back of the head from me and the rest of us. Get your car out of Bubba's auto repair and country store and start tinkering on it yourself. That is how you will learn. You are not fabricating anything just pulling stuff out and replacing it with new stuff. Pull off 1 plug wire at a time and replace it and the spark plug. But we went throught this with you already kiddo, I thought you did all this stuff already. Make it reliable first then make it fast. Capishe'. Keep us posted:TU:

    Adrian,
I think you psyche yourself out over thinking some of this.
As Anthony said, you won't learn anything unless you give it a shot yourself.

You can do it man! :TU:

I also keep a spare set of points & screwdriver in the glove box just in case.

I've posted this before, but an often overlooked problem with the points system is a failure of the shorting switch in the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid in addition to operating the starter drive also operates a shorting switch which temporarily bypasses the resistance wire while the engine is cranking. This applies battery voltage to the coil for improved cold weather starting.

Adrian, won't start is different than won't crank. You need to differentiate between the 2 and tell us which problem you have.

Get used to it. As time goes on, there will be less and less mechanics even required through their training to work on these cars. If you find someone who does, chain them to a tree and don't let them go. Or just learn stuff by continuing to come to this board.

It is amazing the stuff I've learned here, and also hopefully I've helped a person or two.

Dont worry...hit myself extra hard haha. I feel so dumb for just not doing this stuff myself...it has a brand new cap and rotor so im picking up some MSD spark plug wires and spark plugs (specific brand?) im getting shorty headers so will I have to get different plugs with those?

Thanks, I definitely have a lot more confidence in myself after all this.
And if i mess anything up...I just ask you guys!!

I dont know much about that who starting switch thing...but Ill try to figure it out

I dont have a cranking problem...I just thought it was peculiar that once the car was given a jump it started up quickly...like it wasnt getting enough juice or something...:Do No:
