Does big rims look stupid?

  1. Hmmm. Hard to tell. Perhaps you should have the driver get out of the car and stand in front of it so we can tell for sure?:Do No:

Nearly 100 years ago they made Mack trucks with large diameter rims and low profile solid rubber tires. They were so hard to ride in that the drivers used to cut one of the metal braces out of the roof of the cab so they wouldn't hit their heads on it when they went over a bump in the road (find a restored one and see for yourself).
Fast forward to 2009, and people are back trying to use large diameter wheels and low profile tires with rock hard sidewalls, and once again it makes the vehicles dangerous to drive and uncomfortable to ride in. Those that refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
All 22 & 24 inch rims do on a car is prove that the owner has more money than brains...and that's not a shot at any one individual here on the board, It's just my personal opinion on the subject.

Here is my cousins 1968 Impala Fastback

24 inch wheels, They DO NOT rub at all, Car isnt lifted. He has air shocks on the back because he likes the rear end up a little.
SS 427 motor. Super fast. These rims dont hurt the performance too much that i can tell. He will smoke those tires all the way down the road. The car turns with ease and nothing rubs or scrapes. The ride is smooth. I think this car was 'done right' Its painted Metallic Candy Orange glow. He gets compliments everywhere he goes from young to old people. What do you guys think of this car? I think its beautiful.

He must just chirp 'em. One decent burnout and it must be sparking!!!

It is a nice car, :bglasses: but 24's :puzzled: -too cartoonish. IMO :Comp:

Bet it would be faster without those heavy rims and some 15-17" rims on it.

The only thing I don't like about the car is the rims. Otherwise, very sharp.

At least they fit and he didnt have to raise the car up like a truck lol.

Yeah its very fast even with those big wheels on it. The car takes off from a dead stop like it weighs nothing. The car is stupid fast, I would be afraid to drive it.

I have Oasis 18 X 9 Ammo rims on my Omega. And it looks great but as far as going any bigger I really think it's case by case senerio.

You need to ride in some of the Buicks here to know what stupid fast is. I would bet that the Impala is a low 14 high 13 car. Respectable, yes, but fast is relative.

Any engineer can give you a ton of reasons that those wheels do not work that well. Looks like a lot of nice work on it but the clown feet should go.

Can't stand them on a musclecar. Not to mention the rubber band tires. For the life of me I can't see what the big fascination is with them. :Do No: How did this temporary fad get started ? Yuck !!! John

19K looks in six months, this thread hit a nerve. Yeah they look dumb. Craigslist is loaded with this stuff for a reason. Rims shouldn't cost a house payment. The safety issues are endless, too. This nonsense belongs on the showcars, not the streets. Real cars have to deal with potholes and driveways without slowing to a crawl. Begging for a rearender. Old school, rallies, flower mags, slots, those are rims! And you can still pay your bills after you bought them.

Exactly - In my opinion the wheels should be proportional to the car. There's a range down and up in size that falls into that category, but beyond that in either direction it begins to look like a circus car. I agree I think for our cars 17" is about the max "cool" look. Under 14 inches is ridiculous, too.
