You don't have to have big wheels to do that. All you need is a stout powertrain, an old c-clip rear end, and some traction to do that. Sure, the added rotational mass of the wheels didn't help his situation, but he could've been on stock wheels with good tires and did that. That's why they make c-clip eliminators.
I like this one. Maybe downsize the rims to 18inchs and give it a pro touring look. Oo and change that ugly convert top cloth to a nice black.
My 20's have a reasonably similar diameter to stock and mo other modifications required. The advantages of modern low profile tyres over the old baloons are very noticeable to me. I can now brake, go around corners and drive through puddles a lot more comfortably. And there's a couple of slicks now mounted to the old rallies for when things get serious:TU: Plus have u felt how heavy the old steelies are, especially next to the new alloys. (yes I know torque is a factor of radius but i don't think it would be much more or people wouldn't do it
I installed 20's on all four corners on my 65. I think they fit the profile pretty well. what does everyone else think? they are in my avatar photo
After seeing those pics does anyone have any paper towels? I have this "stuff" to wipe off my shoes...
Ive thought about this and on an A-body, i think 18s are as big as I like and that is only if the rims are styled correctly. I like simple looks. Wheels should compliment the lines of a car not over power them. I had always said 17s are as big as I would go until I saw this... Not a buick but with the gsx like stripes you can squink and imagine a buick.
17's and no bigger for me. Matter of fact, I pulled the 17's off my GS and installed the factory wheels back. 17's are stacked up in the shop looking like new.
i know everyone has their own opinions on donkey rims. when i see a car go down the road with rims like the ones just posted on the 84 lesabre i actually laugh out loud at the car. i like seeing them on the road, cause laughter is the best medicine.
Noticed here that the big rims are on their way out. Maybe it was a fad and is leaving soon. Anyone else notice this in their area?
I've only seen one car with big rims driving and that was when we went to Jersey to pick up our stage1.
The big rims on pro-touring cars are nice but those other wheels you see on cars looking like 4x4 with 20"+ wheels are ghetto!
I apologize for my usual amount of assness, and I think you're absolutely right. I'm a semi-old fart who will try to be the last person to be disrespectful when it comes to personal tastes, since I've done the same thing by modding my own car in my own way. As long as safety isn't compromised, I agree...let it rip with the modifications. Devon
WOW, qdub, thanks for the pics. I didn't think that there were that many mid 80's LeSabre's still on the road. When I was young, we drove / fixed up what ever cars that were available. I got my license in 1963, and my first car was a 1950 Chevy sedan. At the time, it was 13 years old. Most of my friends had cars of similar years. I like the wheels on the white car as well as the wheels on the green one (parked in the snow). I have had an 87 LeSabre and a 90 Estate Wagon and am sorry I hadn't seen those pics then. I would have had different wheels, for sure. ou: Which one is yours? and, what is your first name or nick name? BTW, OLD GUYS RULE !!!
