Does big rims look stupid?

Larger rims look fine (17 - 19) if they are tucked under the car.
Those cars I just saw make me want to puke.

    No offense.

Unless you're the guy that put those wheels on any of those cars. Then offense is warranted.

Big rims are not my thing. That being said, I saw lildavecurtis' car at a show. I didn't realize they were 20's. The guy next to me also had some bigger rims. Both looked good. The wheels stayed where they were supposed to be and the car wasn't all lifted up. I think going big on a wheel is very easily overdone. For my taste, 17-maybe 18 would do. I have 15's now and love them. My car rides and handles well. The suspension is completely rebuilt, everything. I've been asked many times, why in the world a 65 Buick Special. I just tell them, look at it. The thing that makes this hobby great is the old saying "to each his own". Here's mine with 15's.

I live in NY. I won't go over 16" due to potholes.

Big rims, car way up in the air - stupid looking

Too much unsprung weight, too much inertia for the brakes, susceptibility to pothole breakage, sheared off axles - really stupid

Car with big wheels, in the weeds, with figured out suspension and braking, that looks like a Hot Wheels car - pretty cool to me

I'm not a big fan of that 'look', but if you like it, more power to you.
'No matter if I ride on dubs or 225 70 14s...the ride will be rough b/c it's a 40 year old car with 40 year old technology for crying out loud'

I don't know about that, my 73' (14's)has a better smother ride than any modern car I have drove. Might be because of its weight,or because it actually has some rubber on the tires, but the ride is very nice.

I AM NOT a foose fan. In fact, I refer to some cars as having been "foosed up" instead of the usual "F" word.

With that said, this isn't a site for low riders or Donks etc. If that's what you are into then have fun. It's just not our thing at this site.

I will say I have seen one car that 20's looked good on. A 1973 Monte Carlo. I thought they were 18's but when I was told 20 I was surprised. Just so you know, this is coming from someone who thinks a 73 Centurion should have nothing bigger than 18's and A bodies 17 max.

My radio is permanently tuned to the BORLA channel.

Regarding wheels, like just about anything else, it's a question of what's ok and what's overkill.

There is a niche for the ridiculous cars, where they are still appreciated. To appeal to the more general masses, a bit more conservatism might be appropriate...it all depends on what you want and who you're trying to impress.

If the "look" is enjoyed by one out of ten people, but five of them are crying from laughing so hard, that "look" might not be the best choice.

My car sits on 17's and they tuck up in the wheel wells perfectly. I've never had any rubbing problems, but the car is lowered a couple inches so I do have to be carefull not to drag the exhaust over big dips in the road.

This picture has 225x55x17 I now have a set of 225x45x17 and it looks even better. yes I'm sacrificing a little ride quality but I only put a couple hundred miles on the car a year anyway so it's not a big deal to me.

I know with my car that I built it for me. I am not trying to impress anybody but me and my wife and kid. My wife hepled and had input on the car. As far as I am concerned, built it how YOU like it and screw anybody else. There are alot of guys on here that are strictly take it back to stock guys. If you look at my car, it's anything but stock, including the stereo. My stereo isn't done yet, subs yet to come. As far as I'm concerned, if you're a Buick guy, you're welcome here. If people don't like a certain car or style, the easy solution is to not look at the car. Build it for YOU and yours. Do what YOU like, after all, it is YOUR car and YOUR money.

Tom has somewhat hit it on the head about doing what you like.

BUT, what is happening here is that people are asking for opinions and then when they are not getting the feel good pats on the back from everybody they are getting all offended. They must be operating under the premise of "If I want your opinion I'll give it to you."

Say whatever you will about the people with 8-tracks/AM radios but none of them are on the site asking that EVERYBODY accept them.

Opinions vary. Do what you like just don't expect everbody else to like it.

I'm sure there are many people out in the "car" world who wouldn't soil there hands on a Buick but who cares.

I think the big rim thing is as valid an expression of automotive enthusiasm as anything else.

But, if you have to ask... I don't necessarily enjoy everyone's method of expression past one or two copies of an oddity such as this... I justd don't dig the monster truck look on a car. Heck, I don't even like the monster truck look on a truck. With the last monster truck I saw up close, the only thing I could think of was what a waste of a blown hemi it was...

For me the largest rim that looks halfway decent on a car is 17" maybe a 18" depending on what wheel it is. The only reason to put larger wheels on a car is for better brakes. But you give up off the line traction with lower profile tires.

Yes, they do. The bigger they get the more they do.
