Im 28 and i hate the big rim look. Ill take 15in rims all day long. thats why you see loads of 18in+ rims with bald tires on Craigslist for a song when the gangsta couldnt afford 1500 bucks for new tires. add to that it makes the car drive like crap and cause extra wear to everything. also where i live the pot holes usually put an end to them but people insist on using them. anybody can do what they want with their car but i would never buy a car if i knew it had those on it. A buddy of mines father owns a garage for 40 years and said that since these ugly rims came popular hes replaced more ball joints/hubs, ect on SUVs and cars than he ever has.
Huh? <!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --> I do agree that sometimes it can be a bit over the top, but Im pretty sure the "ghetto" doesnt have much to do with it. This type of mod may be more popular them some think and I have seen it being done in almost all car groups. Including the huge lifted 4x4 trucks(with aftermarket rimes and tires) I see that never go off road and slow down to go over railroad tracks and what not. But I do agree that people should build their cars the way they want. Maybe its because Im not trying to keep up with, or give a $h!t about the Jones'. And as far as the news clip about pulling over the cars with big rims, I think it is just going to cause more problems in the long run then do good. Just think, according to that logic, no more engine swaps, aftermarket fog lights, beefed up motor parts, trailers, salt spreaders, plows, etc... Hell, Police cars are some of the most modified cars around. We cant all wear matching suits acting like robots and driving smart cars(or chevys) while unarmed, but some of those in power sure would like it that way.
I believe the Cincy police have a point...if any modification to the vehicle compromises safety/handling regulations, they can cite it and impound it. There was an article in the ROA a few years ago about a woman who had a beautifully maintained 1964 Riviera. She took it to a car show, but had installed tires which were slightly larger than factory stock. Lots of people in attendance were complimenting her on the car, except for one older gentleman. He explained to her that he was part of the actual design team for that particular year Riviera, and he did not approve of her choice of tire. He told her that thousands of hours of testing and calculation went into determining the optimal tire selection, and she was screwing up all of their good work by using the wrong tires. She saw his point, and replaced them with the correct size. Some of these donk wheels end up raising the vehicle up so high, it's very easy for them to tip over during hard cornering, or even leave the road at highway speeds. The engineers never wind-tunnel tested them with that much airflow underneath the car, or that radical a tire profile. Sooner or later, one of these cars will wipe out badly and the wheels will be a contributing factor. As for the hillbilly clown monster-truck argument, those vehicles have considerably more weight and less performance...but they, too, should be subject to NTSB requirements for wheels just like the donks. Do one: do them all. Should the wheel-makers perform due-diligence and do a complete study to confirm that using the wheels on a vehicle make/model basis does not compromise safety/handling, and the NTSB approves it, it's only a matter of taste. Until then, the cops can take action on any vehicle which violates codes...be it on wheels, lights, windows, etc...
my thing is i dont want to spend a fortune on something that doesnt improve my car in some way. appearance i guess you could say but i think it distracts from the car. handeling mpg stopping ride all that is gonna go to sh!t. of course the same can said about the 15 inch wide and skinnys.

my 1968 buick riviera tucking 26's...so ya i guess im bias towards big rims and i didnt have a lift...
Not having read the majority of the thread...short answer...YES...really big wheels look stupid on cars. The "wagon wheel" look as I call it is the single most ridiculous thing I have ever seen done to cars. :Smarty:  :spank: uzzled: :error: ...but that is just my opinion.
To me the really large wheels and tires look just plain silly! I like the look of 18" wheels with nice wide tires that are about 2-3" taller than stock on the rear.... I love the look of a 30" tall tire on the back even with just a 15" wheel like mine. On the front I find a max tire height of 27" looks best, any taller than that just looks silly on most cars.... As many point out the ride on the road with 3/4" of tire between the rim and the road rides like crap unless you are on a perfectly smooth track... That said I think that it is great to see old cars still on the road.... Others would rather a car rot in a field than see it on big wheels but not me! Drive these cars and use whatever wheels you want to.... Many think my wheels are ugly and I should not have ruined my nice car with a roll cage, twin turbos, non numbers matching engine, trans or rearend but to me it is great for a street car. I am going to have three sets of wheels for my car: 1. The street rims/tires in the pics for car shows 2. A set of beadlock rims/slicks for the rear for racing 3. 17X9 wheels with 275/45/17 on the rear and 16x8 wheels with 245/50/16 on the front for road trips and autocross racing. Still enough tire to keep the car from riding like a brick. Who cares what others think just build cars so that you are happy!
"Do" big rims look stupid? About as stupid as the "does big rims look stupid?" question. It doesn't make sense.
Big rims do not look stupid,,,, on a swamp buggy.....:Brow: But, on a street driven car,,, they look just as stupid as the pants down around the knees thing that is done now days....
