The cam they have advertised should easily run this motor past 6 grand. If this thing has ported heads it will make its power at 5800 torque at 3600

The build they are doing reminds me of your original build with the 510 cam. You said it was 398 HP at what RPM?

  3. sean Buick 76

    sean Buick 76 Buick Nut

I guess 395 HP at 5700 RPM and over 400 FT of TQ from 3400 to 5500 RPM with a peak of 431 Ft of TQ at 4000 RPM.

It will be nice to see the effect of the TA roller cam in the R&D engine that will hit the track this spring. We will see side by side differences with the roller cam vs the old flat tappet cam.

5900 to 6100 rpm, It took till 4000 rpm to get to the 370 torque, which I was surprised it did not make more here.

It is typical with a large cam on the Buick 350... Loss in torque. I bet you have more torque now with your mild camshaft.

On my online TV guide, it indicates this is a "new" show, but is dated 2000. Old, but not previously broadcast? :Do No:

Well the parts list is on the web site. looks like the comp Big mutha thumper cam, T/A Stage 1 intake and doug's headers. I will be getting up to watch this one. Mayeb get some ideas for the wagon motor build.

Unless the heads are hogged out that engine will put out some mediocre numbers especially with that low compression. 243/257@.050" is way big except for all out 350's. I'm thinking if it hits 375HP it will be lucky(no head work) and the torque will be less than that. That cam is only slightly smaller than a KB 107 "Window Rattler" and that was meant for 100 more cubes and a lot more compression. Those recommendations by Comp to go with that cam are the bare minimum. 12:1 compression and a 4000 stall converter to get that hog moving is what I'd say. This is one of those times when I'd like to see them try a custom single plane to at least help out higher up in the rpm range.

I hope they made a mistake with that cam number and are actually using the smallest "Thumper" which is 227/241 and would be a better choice for this setup, ported heads or not. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I can't post links but if you check out Automotive Machine and Performance build up their motor made 353hp at 5600rpm and 385lbft at 4200rpm.

A nice point of comparison to get an idea of what we can expect. The TA 310 is a decent sized cam by itself but this build also has the compression (9.7:1) and head porting (245cfm intake) to back it up.

Unless Horsepower TV has some wicked head porting and or considerable compression in this build I doubt we will see much over 350hp. Not that that is a bad number but its sure not anything beyond what we have already seen.

The cam is probably going to be too big if it is at 9:5.1 comp. I am at 10:6 with mine. You guys have it right if the heads are not ported and it isn't up over 10 on the compression the power is not going to be up there. A backyard hot rodder would have had the heads ported I can't see why they wouldn't. Oh I for got it is for TV and after all it's just a Buick how much power could it have?

I wish for once someone would put in the big cam with 11:1 compression with maxed out ported heads and flog the crap out of it. Lets get this thing done once and for all on how mean the Buick 350 is. I said is.

I did get more torque but I think I only went about 3-4 tenths faster in the 1/4. the MPH was close to the same. The first thing I noticed was no power at top I made up for most of that down low but I think if I would have had the loose convertor that I ended up putting in after the cam change the big cam would have been closer on time.

The engine seems to like getting up to 3800 or so for max pulling power. The 3000 stall I have in there now with the 4speed auto has slowed me down some in the 60ft. about a tenth and a half. I do make up for that in the 1/8 mi. but that 60ft is important. I got a tighter convertor because of the nitrous use but I did like that loose 3500 convertor. You were out of the hole right now. I would bet that 510 cam with a 4000 stall convertor and a 411 gear would be the crap.

  15. mhgs

mhgs it just takes money !!

mine is at 11-1 and a fair comp solid 550+ / 280+ and desktop dynoed at 526 and with a 3200 stall and 3.92 gears it reall jumps out of the hole...I can only guess that with more gear it would almost pull your neck off.
We all know that $$ sells parts so they will pull all the off the shelf and in the end say that...." The buick is a torquey backyard motor but...they chevy small block has more potential " BUT.....we all know what we can do !!!

TBI unit. Cutting edge technology in 1985. All the advantages of a carb but with sensors and electronics to make trouble shooting more difficult. There's a reason Olds ran the q-jet right alongside Chevy's TBI engines. The TBI doesn't offer much of an improvement since it's still not controlling how much fuel goes to which cylinders. If it's not multipoint injection than there's not much of an upgrade over a properly tuned carb.
