    Yeah I know Nick, I'm stubborn that way. Well anyway here is after the 20 min break in. I gooped the cam and lifters with the stuff that Crower sent with it but forgot to the zddtd or what ever that crap is called. I hope I didn't hurt anything. I added it after the break in and will run it for a little while. I drove it up and down the street a little didn't get on it to hard but seems to have quit a bit of power without boost. In the video the car died at the end because I forgot to turn the fuel pump on:Dou:. I think I need a break. More videos to come. I am going to run it a little while with the break in springs and then change over to the heavy stage1 valve springs. Mark said the water/meth kit is on the way. That is when we will see some crazy stuff. That is if I didn't kill the cam.

    Awesome! That boost referenced methanol kit is going to rock.... Excited to get mine as well.

    Wow part throttle acceleration is incredible. It only builds about 1.5 pounds of boost at 1/4 throttle but holly cow! I think it is pulling harder at 1/4 throttle than my 12.70(1/4 mile) Bracket car. I have some intake manifold bracket issues to deal with before I can even get 1/2 throttle. Those of you who are lurking in the shadows of this whole "turbo or not to turbo", you don't know what your missing. You have heard "there is no replacement for displacement", well that person obviously never tried boost. I think the new saying should be "He who has boost rules the roost!" If you can't tell, I am very pleased with the build.

    Funny, just a couple hours ago i was having this conversation with my buddy :).

    Im on the fence about turbo, or stg 2 heads.... I want both but my wallet cant handle a re-inforced block just yet.

    Glad to hear you liked. Would love to see some vids....

    The stupid monster struck again. I used permitex High tack red on the intake gasket instead RTV silicone. Long story short I had water in my oil this morning. I don't think I ran it with much water in the oil. And if it did have water in the oil, I only drove it around the block. So now the plan is to let the water finish dripping out of the oil pan and see how far down the radiator is. Next I will pull the intake and put it back together using the right stuff. Then I will put water in the radiator and see if it starts dripping out of the oil pan again. If it does, then I will need to dig deeper into the engine. But if it doesn't leak water anymore then I will put oil in it and run 15min drain it and repeat and repeat and repeat to make sure the oil has no sparklies in it. If all is good then I lucked out. Otherwise my bad mood is going to get worse:ball::ball::ball:

    I have said this once but I am going to say it again. I wish putting the engine together was as easy as adding turbo's was.

    James;

    I spent the winter helping a freind build up his olds 455, and we too experienced the coolant/water in oil....

    Beleive me when i say, i KNOW what youre going through.... We had no idea where it was going into the oil. So heres some tips i can give you to save you some grief.

    Possible culprits;

    1) bad intake manifold gasket sealing
    2) Bad head gasket sealing
    3) Bad water pump sealing
    4) Sorry but i have to say it.... Cracked block.

    In our case, we had absolutely NO white smoke. This would rule out water in the combustion chamber, so we scratched out bad head gasket, and cracked block.

    Next up we pulled off the valve covers to see if there was any water, or chochlate milk on top of the heads. Choc. milk would indicate the oil tube is picking it up and pumping it through the engine. Not sure what water in that location would indicate, but we didnt have any.

    Next, my buddy ordered some "special" order intake gaskets AGAIN which cost $50, and take a week to get in. We pulled off the intake, and.... there was NO water in the (geeze i dont know what this area is called come to think of it...) lifter valley? This was incredibly confusing to me, because i was sure the intake manifold hadnt sealed....

    After some head scratching we decided to reseal the timing chain cover. Olds (much like buick) has a timing chain plate, which then has the water pump sealed on top. We sealed the water pump extra good, but the timing chain cover had a discontinuous bead of silicone around 1 of the 5 or so bolts. This was letting a few drops of coolant underpressure drip directly into the front of the oil pan, and was leaving no other traces. We sealed it, and problem was solved.

    One tool we didnt have, that would have saved us alot of grief, was a cooling system pressure testor. This would help you narrow it down even further, and help you confirm that you infact fixed the problem WHEN you get there.

    This is no time to get frustrated, youre so close!!!

    Those are all good tips, and I definitely didn't think about the timing cover. I am somewhat positive it was the intake gasket. The water level finally quit going down in the radiator and the level was about level with the bottom 1/4 of the intake. So all I did was loosen the intake bolts and water stated streaming out of the oil pan again. The intake just lifted off without any strain. The picture you see here is the intake on the engine hoist. What you are looking at is the valley plate that was stuck on the intake still. Which is more than I can say for the intake gaskets, thee hardly even look used. Any way that white froth you see on the tip of my finger is what I wiped off of the top of that plate, you can also see more of it on that ridge back in there. Anyway it is my opinion that could have only happened from water oil mix slipping out from behind the intake gasket. If it where head gasket then it would not have got up there. Well I guess it doesn't matter what I think, we will see what happens tomorrow. But I will sleep a lot better tonight

    I would also like to thank all of you for your support.

    The Third and I hope final set of intake gasket gaskets should be here by Monday. I flushed the system 4 times 2 quarts at a time. The first time just by rinsing the valve train and lifter valley then the last 3 times was with the oil pump. Each time I emptied the oil filter. On the fourth and final time the oil looked good. I cleaned Intake and valve covers, man what a mess. tomorrow I will clean the block and heads with some lacquer thinner and then wait for the intake gaskets to come in. When I get it together I am going to flush the system three more times. Gees, I hope this thing will be running when the alcohol/water kit gets here. What do they say, Third times a charm:pray:

    James, I used to get excited when I saw new posts in this thread. Now it's like when you find some old tupperware container in the fridge, and reluctantly pop the lid open to smell if it's rotten.

    Hey Mark eventually it will get moldy and then you get penicillin. That's all this is, I'm not screwing up, I'm making penicillin.

    I got the intake gaskets yesterday. They where .060 instead of .030. So It is going to be another 2-3 days.

    James,
    We need to have a rule, unless you are boosting your own motor stop complaining. You have no idea of all the little things that slow your project down. I thought I would be done a month ago. Fat chance.

    So to all the kibitzers :bla: :bla: :bla: :bla: and :moonu: :moonu:

    Keep at it. We will get there. :laugh:

    Doug, you got that right! I thought I would do some "winter projects" and just finally got the heads off last week. :(

    I can give James a hard time though, 'cause I boost. No, actually James and I are on the phone all the time giving each other a hard time. I bug him about his Murphy's Law Tribute Build, and he bugs me about my automotive anorexia.

    My buddy Joe says "Murphy was an optimist!"

    Do you guys have any idea on what to do for a carb hat. I have 2.75 inches of clearance. I tried the spectre hat but did not want to cut the vent tubes on my new carb and without that it blocks the vent tubes. May have to go that route.

    Well guess what? Some one left the fridge door open and all the food is rotten.:rant::af: Got every thing together and I still have a oil and water mixer machine. I guess I will go for water pump gasket next seems how I have 2 or three of them left over from prior builds.:ball::ball::ball:
