Same carb. Mark Metdker was running on it. Can't remember if it's a 750 or 800 Edelbrock. I'll have to look again when I get home.

Had the same problem with Nick's carb on it. Had great throttle response (it would really hop when you kicked the gas). Still tried to die.

Gets worse the warmer the car gets.

The first two things that pop in my head when tempature increases is one Vapor lock the other is the ignition coil overheating. You said you worked on the ignition what did you work on?

At WOT from a stop or near stop with a full tank of gas and no sock and no dented gas tank. New fuel pump, filter, carb is showing to have correct fuel/air ratio. It does it after it shifts to 2nd and is around 2-2.5k rpm.

Before I did the MSD distributor upgrade, the car seemed to shift short from 1st to 2nd like at 3-4k rpm. Now it shifts correctly at about 5k rpm. What gives? Not complaining, it is working great now. Great response compared to what I had before. Car was dead before.

I'll have a graph from my friend's testing if your guru needs it. Let me know.

Yep, got rid of the external coil and got everything under the cap. New module, rotor, cap, etc. Runs a lot better now.

I pulled the deck thing (what is it called?) down out of the attic. It's a Year One I bought back in '88. I has the speaker holes under the mesh and is still in it's plastic wrapper and box. It's in perfect brand new condition. If I can't fit it in the car in the box, do you mind if it's out of the box?

However it makes it there is fine Dee, as long as it is not in pieces.

Did you replace the External coil?

We'll negotiate price when I get it there and you see how beautiful it is!!!! :Dou:

Got rid of the external coil. There is plenty of room between the distributor and everything else, so the coil in the cap shouldn't be getting hot.

Mark was running the car with the external coil sitting on the intake!!!! Supposed it was running (from what I could see in an old pic. from Temple) 13.3 dial-in with it sitting there!!!!

The GM in-cap coils do tend to get hot, all bundled up inside the cap like they are...might be yours is a weak one. If you want, we can swap my HEI coil for yours and see what happens.

Sure, if you could email me the chart, I'll pass it along. jblkmyers at sbcglobal.net

    Keep digging !

The fuel pump "eccentric" [ I misspelled it ] is basically a lop sided wheel on the end of the camshaft between the timing chain upper gear and the distributor drive gear on the 350/455 Buick engines [ Olds engines have the eccentric in front of the upper gear without anything else in front of it, since Olds distributors are in the rear of the engine]. Age and miles eventually will wear a groove in this wheel so the fuel pump does not get enough "throw" which will cause a loss of fuel pressure. Years ago when I rebuilt my 403 Olds the eccentric on that engine had a HUGE groove worn in it, yet it ran strong with no problems, of course once I rebuilt it and replaced everything it ran MUCH better.. I had a Buick 350 wear an eccentric too , but only discovered it due to ruining the stock timming chain's "nylon" upper gear, never noticed a lack of fuel pressure....every stock Buick engine I got when I was younger usually lost the nylon teeth on the timming gear within a matter of weeks/months! I learned to just replace then with steel before I even tried to drive them every day. So it "might" have a groove worn in it, or it may not. If you replace the fuel pump again, look inside the engine and hand turn the engine over and see if the surface of the "wheel" that the fuel pump arm rides on is smooth or has a groove worn in it.

What you were thinking of for your carb is a "spacer" , generally used to keep the carb further away from the intake to keep the fuel cooler and/or to make the length of the intake "runner" longer. Are you running a vented gas cap?? If it really IS vapor lock that can help.

Maybe vacuum advance was screwed up before and causing different vacuum pressure on the transmission modulator [ an auto right? ]

    Oh Oh Oh

I just thought of another one....You said it shifts different now, and its a turbo 400/....I had a shift modulator go bad on a TH400 in a Pontiac I had, It would shift good cold , then as it got warmer the engine ran crappy and the shifts sucked, eventually the worse it got it was sucking transmission fluid THROUGH it and up into the intake manifold [ shift modulator on a TH400 runs on vacuum from the engine ]....I didnt figure it out until the smoke started pouring out of the engine from the Trans fluid getting into my intake !!!!

Get under the car and pull the little rubber vacuum hose off the round modulator on the side of your transmission, if transmission fluid drips out, replace it !!!!! :TU:

After I did the MSD distributor kit (in cap coil, module, cap, rotor, no new vacuum advance), it seemed like the car didn't short-shift anymore. It use to shift-short from 1st to second like at about 4-4.5 rpm. Now it'll keep going up to about 5-5.5 rpm where I need it. It's a T350. I'm happy with the shifting now.

The engine was rebuilt I think in '01-02 and doesn't have that many miles on it as far as I know. Previous owner did race it.

When I pulled the pump last time, I looked up in the hole and saw nothing that caught my eye like a groove, etc. The pump arm was hitting the timing bolts, so had to shave it down a little.

"The pump arm was hitting the timing bolts, so had to shave it down a little."

I never ran into that one, hmmm a new one on me..... :Do No:

    TH350 behind a 455...very nice !! Lighter, and crisper shifts I think....

Guess everyone will have to keep thinking....like you said ..SOMEBODY out here must be able to help ??

    -G-

Dee -- I have an Edelbrock heat isolator gasket that I am not using. Its a real thick gasket for between the carb and intake. I will try to remember to bring it as I have no use for it.

The car is a mess. The whole car is dirty, it's not running good, gas is up to $2.60 a gallon, I don't have a hotel room, I don't want to drive 60 mph or less the whole way, I'm tired of working on the car every night and not getting any sleep, yada, yada, yada. :ball:

Anyone want to trailer it for me? :Brow:

Think I'll just wimp out and jump in the econo-box or the TA. :Dou:

Not sure if I have a double roller chain. Looked and felt around, but couldn't tell.
