I built what your talking about for a guy out in California to put in his GSX.

Not as a novelty, but to really use.. NOS block, crank, rods, STG 2 Pistons, Iron STG 2 heads with no/very little porting, correct B4B and Holley carb.

Came with an NOS Stage 2 camshaft, brand new, never run... but I set that aside, I recall thinking "what were those engineers thinking about with those specs on a STG 2".. so what Guy said about it being actually designed for the 69 Stage 1 makes sense. Anyway, I deemed it too large for decent street manners, and we ground a custom cam for that project.

There is a thread on the board here about that build and dyno test. Motor made good power, been in that car for years now. I think that STG 2 build was 10-15 years ago.

Thanks JW, could you provide a link or Title to that thread?

You know Jim, my best friend have thought the same thing about the Stage 1 engine.
What were Buick engineers thinking building a performance engine with dish pistons, in the hole, no squish band to speak of, but it runs like hell and puts out 510 pounds of torque. Who would have figured that out??? VET (Navy)

There’s a reason these engineers worked at a big automaker, they were smart!

I get it. If you notice, most of the high performance Buick guys. Build there engines with zero decking and using pistons that promote excellent squish band performance.
I think Buick engineers were heading that way with the Stage 2 development. Heads and pistons are totally different then the Stage 1 and the Stage 2 gives a lot more power & HP.

To bad the factory performance had to stop because of unleaded gas coming online and EPA mandated sticker emissions. VET.

To follow-up on my first response. At the time Buick developed the Stage 2 package, MoPar, Ford & the other GM Divisions had bothering to compare with Buick's Stage 2 package.

I've offend wondered how far Buick could have developed their engine performance upgrades if the muscle car era had lasted another 5 to 10 years. Because Buick was clearly ahead of the pack. Even MoPar's Hemi couldn't come close to compare. VET (Navy)

Correction, damn auto-spell correction > MoPar, Ford & the other GM Divisions couldn't compare with Buick's Stage 2 package. LOL

Search thread, Buick head design, and you’ll find Jim wise results of the iron head stage 2 Dyno runs. 502 HP at 5800. 508 TQ at 4300. 120 HP over the stage 1.

    Thank you.
    Now that's what I am talking about. 502 HP @ 5800 rpm's. Way more rpm's than a Stage 1.
508 TQ. That to is amazing.
    A complete head and piston
Re-design and Buick still obtains monster TQ results.

Is this the cam you got from me at the nationals? If yes then I had no idea it was an experimental cam. That was a great purchase then. Lmao. Glad it went to a good home.

Denny should know the spec numbers of that experimental cam. It came from his department. He keeps really good records…I would give him a call. Or his team should know them. They were still living a couple years ago. I’ve met them then…

That’s what the stage 2 heads were all about.

I just noticed that 508 TQ came in a lot later 4300 rpms than the Stage 1 455 @ 2800 rpm.

I assume that's because of the Stage 2's different head & piston designs?
That has me wondering if the TQ at 4300 rpms gives the Buick a higher top-end speed???
I also wonder if the higher TQ range gives the Buick better traction at the start, keeping the tires from going up in smoke?

Here’s the Dyno sheet of my 474 iron head stage 2 heads un touched. Custom ground hydraulic cam 540/246/ 560/261 113 11.89 compression SPX ta intake out of the box. Quadrant flange. 4150 HP spacer adapter with 950 quick fuel diamond black carburetor. Unfortunately, we only were able to make one pull because we lost a couple loops on the cam. timing with set only at 28°. 68497379624__ADF15C2C-151B-43EF-836C-2A53C7DB63CD.jpeg There was a lot left on the table. You can see peak. HP at 5800

Round 2 will be 481 ci 10:58 compression, cam about the same, Holley only B4B, vintage Holley 850 kustom headers.

Tom Rix’s Stage2 dyno’ed like 580 but with a 107 cam as the stg2 cam wasn’t designed for the 2 heads. At all. And Buick didn’t have a cam for that set up.

A 1969 stage2 cam was still sold to the public for the 1970 and up stage2 package. That’s all they had. It didn’t work with the new heads as you may know.

Questions, Stage 2 Iron: Can you run pump gas?
I assume you're using race gas at that CR level?

Why did you switch to a B4B from the TA SPX & drop you CR on your 481 ci?
    I'm considering going with a B4B on mt 462 70GS.
Thank you. You're really pulling some assume power.
Can't wait to see your next Dyno pull. VET (Navy)
