New Mustangs, not muscle cars.

If there's one thing i don't like about Mustangs these days, it's the fact that their saying it is the closest thing to a new factory-made muscle car. Well, i hate to burst your bubble but that is all a bunch of BS. Anyone that says that can :moonu: . There are two major points that make these Mustangs not muscle cars. First of all, a V6 is not a muscle car. Secondly, real muscle cars are all steel, not fiberglass. And another thing, a muscle car, is NOT supposed to look like a RICER-WANNABE!! I don't like Ford, i'm a Chevy boy, but i have some advice for Ford: Why don't you guys try to make some better trucks while Dodge seems to think that those Piece-o-shite Hemis are cool.

Well.. they might not be a "real" muscle car, but I think they might be right with "their saying it is the closest thing to a new factory-made muscle car".
    What else is out there?

You might get a little bit of an arguement about the "V6" thing too.
I consider the GN a muscle car, although it doesn't fit the stereotypical musclecar mold. But any car that can go 12's or even 11's with only a few minor mods is a muscle car in my book.
I think some of the newer "cobra's" go 13's from the factory?
Thats definately musclecar material in my book.

While GM blood runs rampant through my veins, I've always had a soft spot for many makes and models of other brands... yes some Fords, and even Mopars. :eek2:
I can appreciate a fine car, regardless of the nametag.

The thing that sucks about the Mustang (in general) is that there are sooooooo many of them, and about half of them run 17's, but are driven (and talked up) like they run 12's. That gives the "good" ones a bad rap.
    :Dou:

Mopars current use of the HEMI legacy is going to ruin a name which used to stand for something. Whats next, a 100 HP 4 cyl "HEMI" in a Neon? Talk about adding fuel to the ricer fire. it HAS to be fast... it has a HEMI in it.

Except for the Corvette, GM has nothing to offer. The new GTO looks like every rental car I see at your local airport.

The new Mustangs just shown a the Detroit Auto Show look great plus there is a new AC Cobra by them designed by C. Shelby. Finally, they are getting ready to sell the GT 40-- just awesome.

I am not a Ford owner, but they are killing GM and Dodge in ALL the muscle car markets, except the Viper and Vette niche, and for good reason.

I agree with you. GM needs to wake up. That '05 Mustang is sharp though.

Where the definition of muscle cars go, that topic is like beating a dead horse.

    :spank:

Everyone has their own opinion. As history has it, I guess the definition would be a good horsepower to weight ratio.:Smarty:

With the new GT40 coming out they will be killing them there too.

Dustin, I think the only one who needs advice right now is be GM. The mustang has never been a muscle car, it has always been a pony car and always will be, but right now it is (one of) the best subsitute. The mustang, muscle or not, still lives to roam the streets and the Camaro and Firebird are things of the past. Why? Because GM couldn't get their act together and put together a package that everyone could enjoy, (that means not just catering to those who want a 350 hp SS, but also the 16 year old girls who want an easy to drive V6 ) they aren't playing the game anymore. The Mach1s and Cobras are putting down much better numbers in stock form than most of our musclecars ever did.

And remember, most of our musclecars could be ordered with straight 6s... The badges on the car changed, but the sheetmetal didn't. We will never have musclecars again, they were part of an era that has passed. But we have some pretty cool high-performance cars now that are a lot more driver friendly than our straight-line rockets. :TU: I shudder at the thought of being able to cruise down the track and instead of hitting the breaks and stoping to make the turn at the end of the track; downshift and slide through it at 55 mph in a 4 wheel drift. I think there is room for everyone to play.

I heard that new mustang will be available with a motor that makes 500HP. It may be a "pony car", but I'll bet it really hauls!:3gears:

As a former Mustang Cobra owner, I can tell you that those cars are a blast to drive. While they are not a muscle car they are the closest thing there is. Now they are developing a Modular V10 that is 351CI and makes 500hp. The car ran 12's at Milan Dragway and couldn't get traction. GM has nothing to offer now days and I agree that the new GTO is ugly as sin. Until there is a car for $30k runs with a vette I will be buying a new mustang.

GM Needs to wake up:Do No:

    HMMMMMMMMM,

Even the base V-6 Mustang has over 200 NET horsepower. Thats like 250 with old gross rating. Sound pretty good to me. The V-8 GT is not a musclecar you say? It has 300 net horspower on tap and the best musclecar styling seen from Detroit in years. Everyone's got their own taste in cars. But I say the new Mustang is a Kick-A$$ musclecar and yes, I want one BAAAAAAAAAD. Next to Buick, I've been known to pine for some products from the blue oval!

    Dr Olds Crush that Mustang!!!!

I absolutely despise Mustangs. Seen one, seen them all. Nothing but a sheep following the heard kind of car to me! But.... I have to agree that GM has nothing and Ford is doing their homework. They can haul a** pretty well. I hate them but you can't deny the fact that they have ZERO competition. Please by all means people do your part and send a Mustang to the crusher, it is your duty as a TRUE AMERICAN!!

A Musclecar is a car of a certain time period that people use as an example to show the world what their car is like, but will never be. All three manufactures lost originality with all the new vehicles that are coming out. When I think of a Musclecar I think of thick sheetmetal, chrome, style, and gobs of horsepower stuffed between two steel inner-fenders on a full frame. A Musclecar possess a characteristic that no car of our time period can ever duplicate. If these manufactures had any sense of style and design talent, they wouldn't be running vehicles off the line that simulate (and disgrace) vehicles from 30-40 years ago.

:puzzled: Hum...so your sayin a muscle car can't have any fiber glass..and no 6....hum. so a Corvette, Fairlane, Chevelle, Camaro, (old) Mustangs, Cuda's, SKYLARKS, GTO's, Lemans, Tempest, Javalins, Cutlass, none of these cars were "muscle" cars??...hello, all ...ALL of these cars could be had with a inline 6, fiber glass, one of each or even both......The new Mustang is a huge leap in the right direction....GM has done nothing to carry the "muscle" into the future...the best they can do is go get a OLD design from down under and stick a GTO badge on it and do the legend of the GTO no justice what so ever......rather you like Fords of not...at least they are trying....no one else is....:af:

Dang, are you guys full of **it or what? I guess GM is a horrible company now for bringing back the GTO, which according to some of you, "does the legend no justice" though it runs mid 13s stock. I admit its not the prettiest car ever, but GM is trying. And those who say the vette is the only thing GM has going for them, thats not true either. Look at the new Cobalt, while its not a muscle car, its a clean looking car that will compete with the rice mobiles. Not to mention Cadillac hasnt been this strong for some time.

End of GM fanboy rant. :blast: :eek2:

A national TV news show within the last 48 hours interviewed a number of GTO club hot dogs. They all were disgusted with its looks and felt it was not in keeping with the designs of the GTO legends of the past.

GM just has no rear wheel drive platforms and appropriate sheet metal to work with. To his credit Lutz just did the best he could until he can redesgn the car. It will look a lot different in another year which will help. What remains to be seen is can they make something out of this platform even with a rebody.

It's funny that you mention that.
Last week I saw the new Chevy commercial on TV.
The one were all the cars race to catch up too, and drive up that transport trailer.
Well, the first car up is the Corvette, and I immediatly though it was a Viper, and that I was watching a Dodge commercial until I saw the full size Chevy Pick up and SSR.
    :spank:

The Vette actually looks decent again.

o.k. my turn. for some of you guys that dont like the cobra mustang, answer this question. what in the hell has buick done lately in the performance market? they offer a supercharged v6 that would absolutely be embarassed by a cobra. instead of knocking ford and chrysler we should be worrying if buick is gonna get the ax after oldsmobile. we had a mustang cobra in the shop the other day and i had a chance to drive it. this car bone stock from the factory will hit 105-108 mph in the 1/4 mile. if some of you dont consider that to be muscle car performance then you really have no clue what a muscle car is. i love my gsx but i also am a fan of all muscle cars.

tlivingd BIG BLOCK, THE ANTI PRIUS

but you see the muscle cars do exist though there seen in diffrent eyes. when most of you guys were in highschool you thought the skylark, cutlass, tempest, chevelle were the cars to have. and you'd do what you can (if you had one) to make it faster. (well most of you) I loved my old honda it was dependable, sporty and just a nice driver too. it was an accord. the kids now like the import crowd cause they handle well, can seem fast (try being on an open wheeled gokart doing 50mph) high speed dosen't seem like much when your driving a tank and when you change lanes the body tilts 45 degrees. times are diffrent now and people are liking diffrent things. the closeest thing that all the car companies have now are the pocket rockets and ford gm and dodge are all trying to play catchup to the imports. the eco-tec in the GM's was actually designed to be able to handle tons of hp. (if I recall correctly the bottom end was designed to handle 500 HP stock when they interviewed the GM race team) sure the car is driven with the wrong wheels but dang when you can do this with a 4 cyl...

"How well do they work though? That answer is clear in the Cavalier Ecotec 2.2L drag car. "The engine is very robust, putting out 650+ hp and 450-500 ft/lbs or torque," Peterson continued. "The car has been tested and is performing. Our goal is to work at it slowly. We don't want to let anyone down. We want to look good and have a car that people can be proud of." http://www.j-body.org/gallery/sema2001/tuned.php
sure its full race gear. but still.
