Paul, I only wish I didn't have school tomorrow. That and if my dad was home (business trip on Halloween, sucks). I don't think my mom would get into the Buick with me behind the wheel because of some incidents that probably shouldn't be shared here. Might give some of the guys a heartattack. I'll just suffice to say I'm not the greatest driver yet.

if want something that makes good power and sounds good but isnt loud and raspy

the dynomax and magnaflows are your best 2 mufflers to get they have a deep sound but arent loud and have straight through designs for performance

ive had both they sound about the same the magnaflows are built a little better imo but cost a little more too but not insainley much difference in price

stay away from flowmaster good sound not so good performance wise

gibson mufflers are nice too but a little pricey

stay away from cherry bombs they sound horrible and flow like a clogged sewer pipe

never had pwersticks or heard them

and if you wantit to sound like a race car and perform well dynomax bullet or magna race mufflers but they will be kinda loud but not much more than a flowmaster

If ya want your neighbours to hate you I vote for open headers.

Good luck with all the good mufflers that are on the market today.

Haha they'd just love that around here. Again does anyone know the benefits of an H pipe?

I think I've finally decided. I think I'm going with this Magnaflow 2 1/2 inch system. Comes with an X, plus I like the sound, even if it is on a Chebby in that clip.

Hate to jack the thread but. Does anyone have an Opinion on the quietest "performance" muffler? Like really quiet without being a Cadillac black hole muffler. This would be for a '65 skylark with a 425 Nail. Im not interested in advertising whats under the hood . I prefer the sound of the intake anyways:TU:
Another question... My Electra has mufflers and I see it would have also had resonators under the trunk. Whats the difference between a muffler and a resonator?
    Thanks,

    StageTwo It's a Beauty Too.

When I first put the 400 in my Skylark, I ran stock manifolds, 3" duals and a set of 40 Series (2 chamber) Flowmasters. No tailpipe. That only lasted about three days because it was hella-noisy. I mean down right scary. It was also too much flow because there was no power. The muffler guy told me I needed a cross pipe and some 2.5" tailpipes to get the power back. It worked like a charm and the exhaust sounded absolutely righteous. It wasn't too noisy; just a smooth rumble that specifically stated there was a big block under the hood. At a low RPM idle it had a slight metalic sound as the cam shaft slightly stumbled the motor. And when I dropped it into 2nd gear to use the engine compression to slow down from 50mph or so, it was just bad to the bone!

    Go for the Flowmasters! :TU:

Nick - The "H" pipe is what they did before they did "X" pipes. It was just a crossover tube to connect the right and left exhaust to balance the pressure. Most were a straight pipe which made the exhaust system looked like an "H", hence the "H" term. Several tests have shown the "X" to be the best power add, even over some straight headers. Forget the "H"...

Thanks for the explaination Bill. I'm going with an X because that's what comes with the Magnaflow kit already.

I have the Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers on 2 1/2 (non cross) exhaust. I think they sound awesome and they are a good value as well.

I have a 3" exhaust with DYNOs and it is about the best sound I have heard
and I really like it.:TU: Pete

If enough of us contact Scott Brown at Straightline Peformance maybe he'll start making his street mufflers again! I have a set of the 3" huge case "hemi" mufflers he built and they are quiet and have almost zero restriction. Too bad he stopped making them.

I like my magnaflows more and more, however knowing what I do now about fitment I think I'd probably have gone with the tried and true dynomaxes. Not saying the magnaflows sound bad, but the dynomaxes were a bit deeper and quieter. Then again I had them 2ft from the manifolds while these are only about 10" from the tailpipe outlet. I might put some glasspacks in as resonators if she drones on PT07 but I'm doubting she will.

Dynomax Ultra's all the way.. great performance too

I ran them back in the 90's at the NMCA fastest street car shoot outs.
    9.60 thru the mufflers

Now I'm actually thinking Pypes Violator mufflers. They're supposed to flow really well and sound really loud. Just what I'm looking for. Plus there's a Pypes place not too far from me that'll do the install. I figure if I have the manufacturer do the install, it can only save time and money.

I have been running glass pax on my cars since '68. Either Thrush or Cherry Bombs. I really don't see how a straight through muffler can be restrictive. Especially when putting them on backwards. Look inside and see which way the restrictor cups are going and face those towards the rear. If I get pulled over, I make a comment about the Harley blatters running straight pipes. Why can they run no mufflers at all, make more noise than me, and get away with it? I talked this over with a County Sherrif who was hiding in the bushes on His Harley. "Why doesn't your bike as much noise as the other Harleys". He said that there was a Grey area where they fall into. Grey area my ass. If it's excessive noise, it's excessive noise!! I guess I'm just pissed because back in '67 I ran my 250 Ducati with a straight pipe and the cops were all over me. "It didn't come with a muffler". They weren't impressed. So now I try to make as much noise as possible. I don't care who I piss off. I don't drive my car that much, and I drive to please myself, plus the racket brings me back to the old days!! AHH YES, my wasted youth!! Also, sorry to go off on a tangent.:spank:

P.S. I've decided to try and climb out of my shell and entered my car in the Sloan Summer Fair in Flint this Year. I know the crowds will be stressful on me, but I gotta get this War Crap behind me. If an Anxiety or Panic attack sneaks up on me there are places I can go to be alone and scream like hell till it passes. Wish me luck.:beer
