With so many choices it can be quite exhausting Dou: only intentional pun I'll post in this thread, I promise) to pick one that best fits my needs. I want something that'll be the best trade off between sound and performance. Something like the Flowmaster sound but with better performance like Dynomax or Magnaflow. Edit: Forgot to mention I'll also probably run some TA shorties, definately going with 2.5 inch mandrel bent pipes and an X pipe.
My freind used glasspack cherry bombs on his 350 big block (olds). Its pretty much a straight exhaust, got his fair share of pull overs and warnings. He was polite enough to warn a lady walking by with a sleeping baby in a stroller that it was going to be LOUD . Also, if you drive your car about 3-5 times a week, you will notice after a month that the glasspacks arent muffling anything anymore. When new they do muffle the sound a couple of decibles. If you have a stereo or a radio in your car, forget trying to listen to it ever. But performance was good.
My combo is pretty straight forward. 1970 Buick 350-2/TH-350 trans., 2.56 rear and a single exhaust system w/ a cherry bomb. Love the sound and performance of them! :TU: Cherry Bomb glasspacks have my vote! :TU:
You guys like pissing off the neighbors? I've had good luck with the Dynomax Super Turbos (long case). They have a tame sound at low RPM, and have less of a drone at cruise. When you get on the throttle, they make their presence known.... and they're excellent performance mufflers.
Sorry, it's probably just me, but I don't like the sound of the straight-through glasspack mufflers (cherry bombs). I hate the "rasp" you get when you get into the throttle. Flowmasters have a nice bass sound, I really liked them on my 10.8:1 436 running a high end cam...they were the three-chamber design back in the late '80's early '90's. I'm now running Borla's stainless turbo-style mufflers on the Wildcat after I got the custom headers done ('97 I think), and I think they're too loud, but only bass...no raspiness. Maybe I'm getting old, but with the setups I've been running focusing on power, there's been no point in spending money on a good audio system! I've been contemplating resonators at the rear since I have room for them; won't be surprised if they slow things down a little. o No: Devon
I don't have a bad thing to say about the Ultra-flo's. The Flowmaster's are too loud, especially with the deep low tone of the Buick. Glasspaks kill power, actually the ultra-flo's make more power than the flowmasters also. The x-pipe will make the engine sound higher pitched and revvier, and it will also knock about 3 db of sound level out of it.
I personally dont like cross overs, they give more of a buzzy Euro sound. Non- crossovers are hard to come by nowadays, but I love the sound.
Summit Racing stainless mufflers sound really good and have no drone at all at highway speed. They have a polished finish and a strait through design, probably flow as good as the Ultrflows but they're cheaper. LINK
Walkers and Dynomaxs are the same muffler but they are the ones that get my vote. Even the prissy mechanical engineer high efficiency snobs loved the sound of them on my '70 Riv, nice deep rumble at idle but she'd howl if you got on her.
I voted Dynomax Ultra's! I bought the longest oval case they offer- 2.5" combined with TA system and H-pipe. Straight through design-it is deep and mellow sounding. I'm also happy with the Super Turbo mufflers with the Nailhead. Not so much with a 455 though. I'm into quiet systems now.
We use the DynoMax Ultraflows on everything these days. We like the welded versions that look like Flowmasters. The UltraFlows are a straight-thru design, but they don't have the louvres inside like glasspacks have that have been shown to reduce flow. The UltraFlows look good and sound very muscular. :TU:
I use the DynoMax long case Super Turbos, part # 17749 The price is right, and they have the muscle car sound. The Ultra Flows are more expensive, and somewhat louder.
Nick....check out www.spintechmufflers.com listen to the sound clips and enjoy!! not a pretty muffler but they work!! i'm having a hard time deciding with ,muffler i want either the sportsman or the prostreet?? (Adam...i too love to get my neighbors pissed at me!!) good luck with anything you choose !! as far as X pipe i have been seriously looking at the torque tech piece..I have the flowmaster american thunder kit on my car now i don't really like it i want to replace that with a 3" X with spintech prostreets just to piss EVERYBODY off!!!
I agree with the Pypes...I run their street pro mufflers and a clip of my car is on their website in the "sounds" section. I am VERY happy with the sound and quality. Heck, you are close enough that we could arrange a meeting and you could check them out in person if you would like.
I have the Flowtech Afterburners on mine and I like the way they sound also. They're different from most others but have a nice med. to deep tone at idle while not being too loud but let people know you mean business when you get on it.The price was good too at about $ 40. a piece.
Thanks for the input EVERYBODY. I didn't think I'd get this much feedback and now I'm more confused. Can someone fill me on in H-pipes? I've seen them before, but I've got no idea about their performance or how they affect the sound. And Paul, I personally think we should have all the people from our area meet up for one last cruise before winter sets in! :TU: I'd really like to meet everyone, since I've only really met Duane. I always seem to miss the Buick crowd when I get to shows o No:
Nick, it is supposed to be beautiful out tomorrow so I am going to drive my car into work in Wilmington. I think the weather is turning much colder after that though...so time may be coming to a close. Regarding H-pipes...I have an X-Pipe with my system and it really quiets down the 3" pipes...supposed to help performance too by evening out the exhaust pulses and reduce droning as well I believe. Not sure if H-pipes do the same thing or not. o No:
