Thanks Judd, any suggestions on a "one stop shop" for all those seals? Another question... The last two sections of tranny linkage were found disconnected and they seem to be bent in ways they're not supposed to be. The 8" (or so) piece right off the tranny has what appears to be an "after-market" bend in the middle of it and the next piece (that has a length adjuster on it) has a couple of sweeping bends that don't look OEM. I was wondering if someone might have a picture/drawings of the linkage or know of a better way to find the original shape so I can bend these back to normal. Also, the short shaft coming right out of the side of the tranny looks like it has been rewelded and the short 8" piece that goes on it is very sloppy. I'm not sure how this first piece of the linkage is supposed to be mounted to the tranny. -BuickBum

I can't remember where I got mine,. Steele Rubber has the trans and motor mounts and the torque ball seals.

    Maybe Cars Inc?

There should be two rods one from shift linkage and one from gas linkage.

    front pump seal

    Hi Judd,

friend of mine who sealed my Dynaflow had a used front pump seal of a 1959 Cadillac flying around in his garage. We found that this Caddy seal would fit on 1956 Buicks, too. The metal part of it is slightly different from the original Buick seal: It has kind of a brim and my friend suggested that it might be easier to seal it up...
    What do you think ?

    Best regards

Not sure I haven't had any trouble with the front of my dynaflow since I replaced the seals, it's the torque ball seal that I have trouble with. I'm going to have to replace it for the third time in about 4 years, this time I'll use a 55 torque ball seal( it has boot around the outside that isn't under pressure when you decelerate) maybe it will last with this set up. I don't see anything to keep dirt and grit from destroying the 56 style seal.

    Judd,

my main problem with my Dynaflow was front-end leakage (the converter rivets were the main suspects before I pulled the converter...) and I hope the new front pump seal will solve the problem.
My torque ball has the habit to be oil-tight for years, then let out half a liter of oil and being oil-tight again for years... :Do No:
(I guess, my old lady is becoming incontinent by now..)

I just bought a 55 2dr Special Sedan. It has a 264 with a 3 speed. It hasn't run since 88. Hopefully I'll have it running by xmas. Anyone know where to get a gas tank for this.

You can use Premium and every few tank-fulls you can throw in a lead substiute and/or octaine booster.

    Collecting seals

    Hello Judd,
I'm slowly collecting all the seals I need to fix my tranny fluid leak into the rear end on my '55 Buick.
I've got a few questions you can probably answer before we start turning the wrenches. We've been studying the cut-aways in my manual and are a bit unclear on the following:
    1) Is the U-joint inside the torque ball lubricated by the tranny fluid?
    2) My drawing shows a boot (rubber?) over the torque ball. I crawled under mine today and there isn't a boot. How necessary is this? Availability?
    3) We were looking at our drawing of where the rear end connects to the back end of the propeller shaft. It looks like a spline from the rear end assembly inserts into the back end of the propeller shaft; correct? The drawing shows a "pin" in the spline also. If there is a pin there, how would one remove it or doesn't it hold the rear end from coming loose?

Thanks in advance for your Buick wisdom...

Yes on torque ball lube. If your torque ball set up uses a boot it is the rear seal, you may have a later type seal with the rubber ring in the cup over the torque ball like a 56. Remove torque tube bolts at the trans end on the torque ball and the spline slides out.

    posting pictures.

You need to use the "GoAdvanced " option for a reply or post. Then look at the bottom of the page for the "options " section. There you choose "manage attachments" and follow the screens. It's easy after your first one... Of course this assumes you have a picture in digital format on your hard drive and it is small enough to match the file size limit. If you use a digital camera ( as opposed to a scanner) set your camera on the "small" file size. That ought to be sufficient
