I use the same natural gas fired back up electric generation system that is used for a command unit at Fort Bragg. Trees falling and water are our main concerns.

I am in central Pa and we already have 2.5 inches of rain since yesterday and calling for 3-4 more by Monday..The rains just keep coming.Earlier this summer,we had 12 inches of rainfall in one week and mass amounts of flooding.

She has been moving along at 6 or 7 mph. I wonder if she is going to pick up speed when she gets in that warmer water and picks up strength??

Supposed to get to Cat 4 140 to 150 mph. The only other time we have experienced that was Hazel in 1954. Go look at the pictures on the internet to see what happened. I watched Hazel from a window back then and hoped to never see a repeat.

I had a flight booked for Thursday @ 2:00pm to fly to N.Y. out of Myrtle Beach, then drive to Cecil County MD on Friday to the N.E. Regionals with Larry and Bruno.

I have just cancelled that flight, they probably won't be flying out of MB and the hurricane will be moving up the East coast ruining any chances of the Buick event from happening.
I live 1 mile from the Atlantic to my east and the International Waterway 1 mile to my west and can't leave my wife home alone to fend for herself. We have 69 mature trees on my property, with the wind and rain this should be a major concern !
Sorry for all concerned as I was looking forward to seeing all my Peeps. Hope to see ya'll in Bowling Green in October. Stay safe everyone.

Stay safe, guys! My sister bought a house about a year ago in St. James Plantation on the intercoastal waterway. She just drove back to CT yesterday. She'll be safe, house? - will have to find out....

What I have observed is that people who have never been through a major hurricane usually underestimate the damage that they can do. I went through Hurricane Carol in New England in 1953; it demonstrated to me what a cat 4 or 5 hurricane is like. It is not fun. If you are in the path of Florence you should be preparing for it now. Once it starts, there's not much you can do but hunker down and hope for the best. If you are on a well and don't have a generator, fill anything that you can find with water - ideally water that you are willing to drink. If you have a way to cook, stock up on hearty canned foods - I like soups that have meat and vegetables and do not require adding water. If you can get ice, fill a cooler or two with bottled water, soda, beer, and other stuff that would cause you to have to open the refrigerator. Be sure that your refrigerator is full. If power fails, lots of cold stuff will help it retain the cold. If you have a chest-type freezer (the best in case of power failure) you are in good shape, opening it for a minute or two won't lose much cold. If you have trees with dead branches, get them off if you can - it will reduce flying objects. Bring in any outside furniture for the same reason. Obviously flashlights and batteries for them are important. Gas for any portable generator is essential - get more then you think you will need. If you don't use it in the generator it will save you a trip to the gas station later. I have very mixed feelings about storing it in the garage, but I wouldn't want it in an outbuilding unless it was built like the barn that we built in Massachusetts. If you have a fire involved with gasoline stored in your house, your insurance probably won't pay. Do not run your generator in your garage - ever. Most probably know all this stuff, but it bears repeating. Good luck to all in Florence's path.

There is no way to avoid damage from a storm like Florence. Yes — you could evacuate to a western state to avoid personal injury to yourself. However, when you live with 10 big canine rescues, 8 feral cats, etc., evacuation is not a practical option. I liken the situation to the coming of an asteroid strike. You just make all the preparations that you can; then sit back and brace for impact.

And now I am seeing a blocking high to the north of landfall which means it will sit there and rain just like Harvey. Good grief.:(
