Why not simple on/off switches, levers, rheostats, and the like. Manufacturers think people are stupid so they have to make their products smart?

Yes, I think they need to focus on fixing or updating what’s “in place” now……….. infrastructure :D
Stuff is broken now, fix that first.

Bill, no guts, no glory! Be the Wild Man, take the EV. This is your chance to give it an honest evaluation, good or bad. When will you get this chance again?

I have no doubt I will eventually own an EV, but not to replace my GS, EVER! If I had the same opportunity as Wild Bill has, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to avail myself of it. I have talked to enough EV owners to know they are reliable. In fact every time I see someone with one, I make it a point to ask them about their experiences with the EV. Been about 10 people so far, and no negative comments yet. There are a lot of charging stations in my area, mostly unused, so access is not a problem, at least where I am. Currently, I have no doubt that it takes some planning if you intend to take a long trip in one. I'm sure that is improving all the time. Don't be a kill-joy Bob:), I'm sure I am not the only one who wants Bill's honest opinion about his experience, I trust him to do just that.

Drew, my son who is a Volt owner, says there is a DC fast charger at the WalMart 600' from the venue. Park, walk, charge, leave.

I'm sure that at the beginning of the 20th century, people said the same thing about horseless carriages. Why would they want to try and find a gas station when there was horse feed everywhere? I don't know why people think that we're going to wake up six months from now and there won't be any gas stations left. Switching to EV's will take decades, but it will happen. My advice, take the Bolt and let us know how everything went. The more that we need charging stations and updated electric grids, the more that they will build. Believe me, if there is money to be made, corporations will step in and take advantage of us, just like they do with oil.

The difference with today is that back then it didn't take any coercion to make people ditch their horses in favor of cars.

This ^^^ is what I've been thinking lately. I don't like the EVs, no matter who makes it (maybe it is just what it represents). However, if the fossil fuel costs get to the point where it seems more advantageous to own an EV for a daily commuter, than I may have to look into getting one.... doesn't mean I have to like it, though. I'm not going to spend $300-$400 per week on gas.

I will be looking forward to Bill's review, too.

The best part about this is you get to spend more money and keep the economy going, but in the meantime you will be broke
What the hell we are all old just get the CC out and max it out.

In the Tesla you tell it where you are going, and it tells you where to stop and charge to optimize the charging and trip time.

I don't have any problems at all with having EV's compete in a free market environment with ICE power vehicles. Some folks will opt for these vehicles, as they work in their situation. Others will stay with ICE power.. as a free choice..

But that's not happening, and that is what I object to.

Our rules against political discussions prevent me from elaborating on why this is not happening.

I only ask this.. Does the quote from one of our members below look like someone who is evaluating EV vs ICE on their respective merits, in the free market?.. To me, it seems he is being forced into a choice he does not want.

The horse and buggy analogy is spot on.. Consumers made this choice, and over time, ICE engine vehicles completely supplanted live animals for a transportation power source. But no government mandate was required, no meddling in the hay market to drive up costs.. The natural evolution of the transportation system happened because the ICE vehicle, even the crude ones of the time, was just a better means to do a job. There were no speeches from officials warning of financial distress due to being in a "transformational" time.

And when they come up with an EV system that is better than the ICE technology, in every way, then the market will move in that direction naturally.

Ideology is forcing this move prematurely, and it won't work, mark my words here. The American buying public will not continue to buy something they don't want. That is why a substantial percentage of EV buyers in CA are opting for ICE vehicles to replace the EV they bought.

Some are trying to eliminate that choice, for purely ideological reasons.

To paraphrase a popular protest slogan of the 70's and 80's..

Jim, you are correct in both aspects of that analogy, of my response. I love my ICE vehicles and never liked the idea of having to replace them with electric. Though if it makes financial sense to by an EV, I "may" evaluate them more seriously for a commuter. I would never get rid of my ICE pleasure vehicles, though.

I hope that this does not sound political as that is not what I'm about, or care to discuss with anyone. I am just a bit annoyed with the sudden obscene rise in the cost of ICE fuels and how it suddenly plays into leveling the playing field between the EV and ICE vehicles, from a consumer standpoint.
