Well this weekend, I installed my new SP-1 intake using my John Osborne Q-jet. All I can say is Wow, I should have done this from the get go and I don't know why I waited so long. I will never go back to the Edelbrock Performer. I noticed no loss of low end power at all. The engine starts easier, idles better, has better throttle response, and from what I can see, the gas mileage is a little better. My Gessler aluminum heads have .040 off to up my compression and I was concerned about alignment. I trial fit the intake with no gasket. The bolt hole alignment looked absolutely perfect. Head threaded holes were exactly dead center of the intake bolt holes. So, I used the .015 gasket. No problem with hood clearance using a 2" drop base air cleaner and 14X 3" K&N filter. I have the Q-jet plenum SP-1. In the next few weeks, I will use the thin plate Spread bore to Holley adapter and bolt on the AED Holley 1000HO. I plan to fabricate a fuel hookup so that I can go from one carb to another when I want. Should be interesting to see what this and my 3.73's will do for my track times. I just need some good weather in September now.
Larry, as usual,it looks awesome. Can't wait to see the difference at the track it made with the intake swap. I love my SP1 but I am wanting to put an SPX intake on AP sometime this winter.:TU: :TU:
Nice Larry, you should do well with that intake. Can't wait to see how much your times drop. :TU: :TU: Steve
If you think the intake makes a difference, wait until you use that Qjet as a wheel chock and bolt the Holley on!! No need to use an adaptor either. The carb bolts right on to a spreadbore and there are no ill effects.
Bob, The plate is thin enough to not matter. There is a potential vacuum leak that could develop if I bolt it right to the manifold. That is what I have been told. I have the plate, it only cost 7.00 so I might as well use it. You have a Holley bolted directly to your Q-jet SP1? TA Performance tells you to use the plate. They want 15.00 for it though, TA1246.
Great Job Larry !! I think you will pick up .3 tenths and 5 mph with the right carb.. I think your getting the speed bug . :TU:
Looks good Larry - almost factory except for the open element air cleaner. Most x-brand guys won't even notice the difference. I tried the Performer back when I had my Estate Wagon and lost ~2 tenths. I didn't notice any real difference in low speed torque but the SP1 sure does make a lot more power at the higher rpms. Looking forward to seeing your et's drop at Buick Performance Weekend in September!
Where is the Buick Performance Weekend in September? And are there and more buick event in bowling green this year?
