    Got the engine installed today...
Now to get everything connected, reinstall front bumper and grille. Need to have new head pipes fabricated. Hope to have it running by the end of the week.

Great thread Jim, Have you done the testing with beehive springs yet?

Sorry if I missed the details, and yes, I know its been a while on the thread...I have another question on the short block.

Did you just clean up the cosmoline and run the NOS block that was used or tear down, replace rings, machine & spec a deck height, etc?

All testing back them were made at 60 degrees air temperature. GM used this as a standard Temp for testing until way up in the late 70's. This would give you some improvement in torque and H.P.. All of the engine's that GM tested back them were made on the same Dyno. And given that they liked to round things off, may have helped some too.

Yup, that's true, but then again I had one of the design engineers wink at me when I posed the torque question to him.. his response was that "we competed with the other GM divisions on Torque"...

This morning, I dug up the air cleaner test info first thing, made a graph and a post.. and then previewed it, but forgot to hit submit.. I hate when that happens.. :Dou:

    here it is again..

    GS 455 Air cleaner test:

Test 5 is with a 70 GS455 air cleaner, with factory paper element and factory lid.. installed on the engine, as it would have come from Buick.

Test 6- only change was installing a smaller diameter lid that just covered the filter, thus opening up the element to fresh air.

Note that at this power level, up to 4000 rpm the loss is minimal.. but the amount of loss increases as the rpm climbs.

With no air cleaner at all it made the most power, another 5 numbers from what you see here..

    Mark,

This was not a block in cosmoline.. not when I got it anyway.. it was a complete engine in a car I bought, but it was never run, we did not know about the STG 2 stuff until I took it apart. It had stock STG 1 heads and an offy intake on it.

Jim, never thought to ask but, What was this engine in? Sounds like it could have been an interesting car?
Who would have put rare hot rod parts all bought from Buick in any old car??

Jim Lore could fill you in on who put this together.. it was part of a Warehouse of parts that he bought out in about '06 or so.. Trust me, the parts in that motor were far from being the most rare ones in that building. There was a collector in North Carolina not far from Jim that had a warehouse full of stuff.

I bought a Silver Mist 70 Stage 1 out of that lot, the OE engine and trans was sitting on a pallet next to the car, this motor was in it, but was never finished. Hooked to this engine was a BB trans, that just happened to be the correct one for a 70 Stage car I had bought thru Jim, about 4 years earlier..

I sold the Sliver Mist Stage with it's engine/trans to Joe Castilano out in OH on my way home.

The motor came back with us, but I had no idea what it was until I opened it up later that year, and found the STG 2 goodies, along with an NOS block and crankshaft/rods.

Got the exhaust connection between headers and mufflers done today. Checked timing. Got the dipstick installed (had to loosen the header and then it went right in). Just need to connect the parking brake cables and mount the gauges under the dash. I ordered a K&N Extreme drop base air-cleaner to use for now. Want to research and find what others have done to best recreate an original-ish Stage 2 air-cleaner setup that would work with a Stage 2 hood setup. Then I'll track down a Skylark hood and use the TA Stage 2 scoop to finish off a vintage themed Stage 2 GSX!

Was fun driving the car the 5 miles to the exhaust shop with open headers :)
