I've never seen dyno test results where a stock Stage-1 made anywhere near 510 ft/lbs of torque. Maybe Buick's dyno was a "happy" dyno back in the day. I always wondered whether the 1970 Cad 500 made 550 ft/lbs of torque too.

No points.. has the single wire Lectric Limited electronic conversion in the distrib. That's a very nice piece, and the most consistant of all conversions I have worked with. Downside is no rev limiter, which is a concern as this is a 4 speed GSX that the motor is going in. My advice.. "be careful"..

    Tommy,

I had Cliff Studaker (buick dyno operator in the 50's, and the engine designer for the 400/430/455 series) in my office a couple years ago..

I showed him the dyno printouts of the stock stg 1 motors.. and asked him about the torque issue.

He smiled and winked at me, and said "Well, you know, it was torque that we were always competeing against the other GM divisions with, and we were all working with the technology of the time, which is nothing like the dynometers of today"..

He was not at all surprised by the sheets.

The six motors averaged 375 Peak HP, and 460 peak torque.

There is no doubt that the Buick engines are the kings of torque, but the actual numbers can be called into question.

    That is awesome! :beer

it's nice to more of these motors built to the "old spec's".

oh...and numbers are only numbers! it's the feel of the wheel when you lean into it a little that counts! torque is king!

Jim did some Air Cleaner testing on the dyno as well. Wait till you see the numbers for various setups tested. Very interesting...

I think the final numbers for the engine as it will be installed is 534 hp and 548 torque. Hope the engine doesn't break the car and hope I don't break the engine!

Want to get the engine in the car in the next couple of weeks. Anyone want to come over and help?

    Can't wait!!

    Tnx Jim!

We took our NOS block apart also last week, and washed the whole engine to get rid of the cosmoline that was protecting it all this years.
Nice to see a piece of history, coming back a life!

Cant wait to read the detailed version :TU: The stock torque rating is a little surprising to say the least  :Do No:

    Hi Rob,
Really lookin good ! Hope you get it together soon.It will be fun to drive, but its really difficult not to " put the pedal to the metal all the time!" My new G-60-15 Goodyears are no match for the torque coming from the iron Stage 2 heads. You'll see !
Take care and good luck on your move .

488@3400 and it just goes up from there. AWESOME! Nice flat torque curve!

I can't even imagine driving that on the street, the temptation would be too bad to just mat it and let it rip...Everywhere.

And kill the hemi without even winding it out. A true gentlemans muscle car.

    Very cool project, Jim!:beer

I think you should contact Tom Shaw from MuscleCar Enthusiast Magazine and see if they are interested in doing an article. People need to be talked to about these historic motors. These pieces are pushing 40 years old and before you know it,

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to run this factory stage two against the hemi roadrunner in the FAST racing, after all the 426 hemi is arguably chryslers ultimate factory engine, just like this is for Buick. I would love to see it stomp that road runner.

As the article in MusclaCar Enthusiast stated is that it was an over the counter purchase. Their were no exhaust manifolds for the stage 2 motor that I know of. It was not installed in a production car. Rules are rules!!!

    Jim is right.
A Stage 2 Buick is like a Ram Air V Pontiac,
both are over the parts counter offerings.
If it was not built on the assembly line, it is not eligible to run in FAST or PURE STOCK.

What a great project this is!

I too am a little "bummed" about the advertised torque ratings. But then, that means everyone else's torque ratings were off the mark too, right? Don't matter, though, . . . just look at that flat torque line. :kodak: It's a beautiful thing.

Got my Youtube hooked up . . . and waiting.

    Rob,

I will be in Ft. Myers during the last week of December visiting family. I'm not an expert by any stretch but I would be glad to turn a wrench or three.

When are you planning on working on it?

Just heard from JW that the engine should be shipping in the next couple of days. Can't wait to get it here so I can start the swap!

I need to order header gaskets and mounting hardware from TA. Should have everything else on hand. Hoping to be able to complete the swap over a couple of days. Everything is freshly restored on the car so I'm hoping it will be an easy swap without any major challenges.

Hope the pilot bushing is a non issue as I seem to read that many people run into problems with the tranny lining up...
