Here it is on the dyno..

STG 2 iron heads, STG 2 pistons, STG 2 cam, new block, rods, crank, correct B4B intake and 850 Holley..

If you bought the stuff over the counter in 1971, and then ported the intake ports in the heads as good as they could be (310cfm@.500), left the exhaust untouched, it made this pwr at 11-1 compression.

    Looked like this..

    And made this..

Not too shabby for a cam with 226*@.050 on the intake, and .441 lift..

This motor, with a different cam and intake, made 558ft lbs, and 549 HP last night on the dyno.

I'm working on a complete writeup of it, and I will tell you how I got it there..

But the "back in the day" number was neat to see.

Jim, those are some serious flow #'s on the intake, what
are those heads flowing on the exhaust???

    Nice looking motor

    Nice looking "stock racer" engine!

Will make a nice sleeper and MOPAR Killer!

Sounds like it would have kicked the butt of most of GM's other brands and was therefore not allowed to proceed towards production.

    Great project Jim :beers2:

First part of your statement is true.

But the last is not...I have a copy of the original internal dept letter as to why it did not make it into production (there intent was to factory produce at least 50 cars!!) from Denny Manner.

Read the Nov 2009 issue of MCR...it's all there.:3gears:

    I got that issue to!
A friend of mine got it when he was on vacation in Florida.
He is a nice MOPAR guy, so he gave it to me to read!

Nice read! And is it by accident that JW is building such a Stage2 engine?

Even from a Chevy guy, that's really neat stuff. No matter what anyone says, I love these type of threads! Very nicely done Jim W.

Yes, your correct, and we did that later.. but I wanted a number that the "average Joe" who bought the stuff, had the heads ported professionally on the intakes, and then took everything else and put it together would look have made, before tuning.. And honestly, it cruises down the road at mid to high 13-1 ratio's, and unless it was in the hands of a serious racer, most guys wouldn't have touched it.

It's the correct 4781 850 Holley, restored by Holley, and is exactly how it would have come out of the box. Right down to the slotted bowl screws with paper washers..

Brand new, never run, NOS service replacement block, crank, rods, ..

The shortblock was originally built in the early 80's, by the date on the rod bearings.. but it was never run. Until a week ago anyway.. :TU:

Exhaust is untouched, and stock, with the exception of installation of 1.760 exhaust valves, which was done to "resurrect" those castings back into useful pieces..

They don't flow as much on the exhaust as you might think.. remember, TA actually made the ports smaller, and picked up flow when he first cast the STG 2 alumium heads.

This head flows 212cfm @.500 on the exhaust.

We will get more into that when I do the detailed writeup.

why's the torque low ? I thought the stage1 made 510ft/lbs :Do No:

Nice job ... someone's going to be ANOTHER happy member of Team TriShield Performance :TU:

(hope you stocked up on hats :bglasses: )

Good catch Alan.. same thing I thought..

For the record, no stock STG 1 on this dyno, has ever made more than 465 ft lbs. I have built and tested 6 of them on this dyno.... all built to factory specs, with all the iron manifolds.

So it is makeing 35 or so more foot lbs than a stocker, but at 11-1 I expected more..

We will discuss that in the writeup..

But the quick answer is the factory STG 2 cam.. and the port sizes..
