Alright , this is great !
What about "Moly" in Delo oil ? Upsides /Downsides?
Is there such a thing as too much zinc ?
I'll be waiting for the test results . I've read that alot of folks here have lunched their cam bearings or shaved a lobe after a rebuild or cam change . I wonder if they left out the Super-Slide ?
Something else , I know about the first couple of 500 mile oil changes on a fresh engine . Would higher content zinc additives in oil slow ring seating ?

Even though the supplements like STP or Synpower treatment are nearly the same percentage zinc as the other "zinc oils", remember, we're only talking about a half quart, so mixed with 5 quarts of non-zinc oil, that's only like 0.03 to 0.04 percent total. If you run the GM EOS with 5 quarts of non-zinc oil, you're at about 0.12 percent.

Thats a zinc additive i assume?and only 6 oz is good for every 5 quarts of oil?can it be used with synthetic oil?

    Thanks

Add says 1 bottle (12 oz.) per 5 quarts of regular or synthetic oil.

Yes, it's a break-in oil additive with zinc. It is a twelve oz bottle, the people at comp cams said add 6 ozs for a 5 qt oil change. Spec sheet says ok with synthetics. Personally, I prefer dino oils. I don't like synthetics, but that is a whole nother issue!

I'm feeling pretty confident that this is a good solution.

And its ok to leave the "break in" additive in your engine correct?

    Thanks

Yes, basically this will make up for the lost zinc in todays modern motor oils. That's all I looking to do..

I think I'll stick with my valvoline...Diesel type oils in a non diesel can't be good in the long run...I wont chance it...

You dont need to use diesel oil with this additive?

    Thanks

I drained the 15w40 rotella out of My suburban, and filled it with the correct 5 w 30, got an increase in oil pressure

shell rotella in the ci4 form is only available in 5gal pails,55gal drums, and bulk,
all gal & quart bottles is new cj4 spec oil. also its not the shell oil co! its the shell, pennezoil, quaker state oil co. all oil co had to meet the new standards in 2007, they have know about it for 10 years, and have met all the industry standards, this goes for off road construction equip, farm, and ALL diesel trucks made in 2007. I would conact a local shell,pz,qs dist, all local parts stores if they stock gals or qts will only have the new product, a dist should have it in 5gal pails.

I just bought a 4 ltr jug here (little less than a gallon) in Canada. I suppose I should stock up.

Yeah, my line of thinking too. @ $133.32 a case that's quite a bit of money AND additive, in my line of thinking. Even changing the oil twice a year. I checked @ Summit and they don't carry it (single bottles). Anyone know who might? Jim :bglasses:

Gentlemen, give them a call they will sell individual bottles.

Also, contrary to popular rumors, zinc has not been completely eliminated from Rotella, only reduced. It is now somewhere between .10 to .12.

Previously around .14. That's why a half bottle additive should work. If I was using a non-zinc SM rated new oil, I'd probably use the whole bottle. I think this is similar to what "Buick" posted previously.

    Thanks Guys.

This Valvoline SynPower oil treatment apparently has 0.27 for zinc content.
At the bottom it claims this info is good until 6/08.

I am wondering if we should be concerned about this zinc issue for our daily drivers? Like my '92 Park Ave.
When it is stated that lack of zinc isn't a concern for newer cars, I am assuming they are referring to overhead cam engines?

I am thinking of checking Fleet Farm to see what grade Rotella is on their shelves.

The main concern is not OHC or OHV, it's if the engine in question uses a roller cam or a flat tappet cam. Scuff of a flat tappet (lifter) across the cam lobe is causing cam failures and cam manufactures are advising using an additive, most commonly zinc, to decrease wear in this area for all their flat tappet cams. Roller cams do not have this problem as the lifter rolls across the lobe of the cam with little friction. Most modern engines use roller lifters, so zinc is not a priority for those engines. Zinc has been shown to decrease performance of emissions equipment, fouling converters and such, to the extent that the manufactures cannot meet the long range performance requirements of the emissions equipment (I believe 150,000 miles) and the government is getting after them. Since most if not all modern engines no longer use flat tappets, the zinc additive in the oil is no longer needed for those engines. As such, it is being removed from modern motor oil.

I myself am using Shell Rotella T in all my engines with a flat tappet, including the lawn tractor, snow blower, generator, etc. Any engine with flat tappets will be harmed if some type of anti-scuff additive is not used in their oil.

Thanks for the clarification Brad. :TU:

It gets worse! I didn't think about my small engines until you mentioned it.
And I just changed oil in the snowthrower last week. :Dou:
