I found this thread very informative. Armed with the info about the GM eos I stopped by two Gm dealers in the Tampa bay Fl. First one didn't know what I was talking about and second one said that they were told that it was no longer available. So I geuss I'll buy Kendall GT 1 Thanks John
My jug ---bought last year (but can't remember when) says CI-4+ yet it says "Advanced Soot Control" on it also....what giveso No: I don't think the presence of "Advanced Soot Control" on the label is determinitive. I guess it's off to check Costco and O'Reilly's tomorrow!
To everyone reading this thread!! Check what oils are available locally at your favorite stores. Come home and check the manufacturers web site for the Product Data Sheets for the most recent ratings. Currently most oils are a SM rating and dont have Zinc. I checked Kendall GT1 high performance has no zinc levels listed. Here is a link to valvoline racing oil with zinc. http://www.valvoline.com/products/VR-1%20Racing%20Motor%20Oil.pdf You might have to order a whole case to get the specific weight you need. Most of the stores carry racing oils in 20w-50 eventhough a10w-30 is available. Dave
just built a 70' 455 and i'm using Shell Rotella straight 30 wt. i believe i read this info on Trishield Performance's web site. i broke in my cam with this oil for first hour of running, dumped the oil and filter and filled back up with straight 30 wt and a Wix filter. Walmart carries the straight 30 most of the time.
Valvoline Race synthetic seems to have a good amount of zinc in it as does the Kendall GT-1,is the Kendall a synthetic formula also? Thanks
I bought a case of Kendal GT1 for my winter beater. It was cheap. Case of 12 for $25. I don't think it would be synthetic for that price. Ray
Several months ago I posted a similar thread as this . Several members said the same thing about GM EOS , that it has had the zinc taken out . Without going back and searching I do remember someone here recommending the Subaru Oil Additive (Break-in?) . Anyway hopefully they'll see it . I can't remember the name , or if Zinc is still in the additive . I haven't seen "Delo" mentioned . Steve
I noticed on a recent oil change sticker I found, 15w40 rotella is in the 350 in my 89 suburban it's being changed immediately to the correct 5w30 as specified by my owners manual
someone here asked earlier the shelf life of oil. I'm curious as well. 'Cause I don't think it was answered.. Also once I did an oil change on my mom's exuinox and put in 10-30 Castrol GTX that I always use. Then noticed they recommend 5-30. What did I hurt/ruin ???o No:
I have heard 2-3 years is good practice, depending on exposure to moisture and temperature variation. Take a look about 1/3 down this page... http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html Devon
From the BITOG tests: Royal Purple Racing has the most zinc at .19% A can of STP has .19% Mobil Delvac has .12% and moly Chevron Delo has .12% and .02% moly Shell Rotella has .12% but no moly Redline has the most moly at .06% Valvoline Racing test results show .11% zinc and no moly, but Valvoline claims they put in .13% to .14% zinc. Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment has moly=.2324 %, zinc=.1740 % GM EOS has .63% zinc, from the Dec '04 VOA test. So my suggestion would be to run your favorite oil, but add EOS, VSOT or STP at each oil change. MUCH info here: http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php
My research is showing differences between EOS released for California (low zinc) and the rest. As soon as I get something definitive, I'll post findings. Devon
