Contrary to popular belief. GM EOS still has all the heavy metals in it. Thats why you can't use it in catalytic cars. It plugs the converter. If the Rotella T says advanced soot control on it its the new stuff.

I'd like to see a recent analysis or a recent TDS. It no longer says it contains zinc on the bottle.
GM likes to sell it with oil changes and the zinc is a no-no with converters. Cars 75 and up.

I noticed in a magazine article GM had both EOS and "cam break-in compound" or something like that in a photo. Anybody know what the deal is there? Maybe one still has zddp and the other doesn't?

I just checked out Caterpillers site and they offer a full synthetic 5-40w oil. Wonder if it also has the good aditives in it?

A good zinc additive is Valvoline Synpower Synthetic Oil Treatment.

Can it be added to a conventional oil?

OK. It will be time for a spring oil change on my 72 GS 455. Last time I used Rotella 10w-30 old formula. If I use the new formula this time, what zinc additive do you all recommend to fill the void?

    Tks, Mike

Rotella is made by Shell and is a Diesel oil. Up until Oct 15, 2006 it had a pretty high zinc content... but not anymore. I stocked up on the old formulation. I haven't heard of a readily available supplement to replace the zinc yet.

my Costco's still has the old formula - got 3 cases stashed and may grab more this weekend

    BG-MOA is an excellent additive

Old formulation was CI-4, which is shown in some of the small print on the bottle. The new formulation is CJ-4.

By law, all motor oil must be compatible. Synthetic oil can be mixed with Dino oil, it's oil!, just oil made with the best molecules. Ever see Semi-synthetic oil on the shelves. It's synthetic and mineral oil blend.

Here is the virgin oil analysis for RotellaT 15W40. This is the CI-4+ (pre October) flavor:

Likely because it has bearing clearances and oil pressure relief flow designed for compatibility.
