Back in the late '80s when I had my '70 Skylark Convertible (Stage1 powered with a 4-speed), I used to hang out with a guy who had a '69 Z-28 tribute. His Camaro was a perfect Z-28, except for the minor detail that it had a 350 in it! I used to love to get people, even guys who knew nothing about cars to go up to him and ask about his car. I'd coach them on what to ask and how to respond when he'd fall into my trap and call it a Z-28. I always had them say "...but didn't Z-28s come with a 302?" At that point he'd always look around for me and give me the finger. I laughed and laughed!
The best part was when I got him to take the car and meet me at Englishtown on a Wednesday night. I even lent him my M&Hs when he couldn't hook on street tires. The sad truth for him was a best of 14.65 while I ran off a string of 13.0s!! OUCH!

My advice is that if you are going to call someone out on a clone, you better know what you are talking about. I have had people tell me that my '71 GSX can't be real because they only made them in yellow and white. It is very insulting when they do not know the facts or what make a '71 GSX a GSX.

Second generation (1970 and up) had the 350's. First generation (1967-69) were 302's.

69 Z28 had a 302. One of the rarest Chevy motors out there, and one of the best. They are worth a ton if you can find one that's origional.

When I was a bouncer, random folks would talk to me, and I almost always end up talking about my car, as it's special to me. I told this one guy, he tried BSing me that he was a fellow marine, but he said some key stuff that any marine would pick up on and know was BS, but thats another story. I told him that I cant wait for my car, he asked what it was, and I replied that it's a 70 Buick Skylark with a 455 put in it. He tells me that he has a "69 Z28 SS." I said "oh really? what size motor does it have?" I was struggling not to laugh, he said "a 594 big block with a 30 shot." I couldnt help it and started crackin a bit, and told him to excuse me. These story telling guys make me smile, especially when its about something I have knowledge about. Hell I have a step brother that tried to tell me back in like 2000 that he had a PC that would have a website loaded before he even finished typing it in the address bar. I just laughed in his face, back then I didnt try to hide it. Now adays, I just bite my tongue as well I can and tell my friends about it.

For those wondering why I laughed at this dude... in 69 there was the Z28, and there was the SS, there was no Z28 SS. And a 594 big block is funny enough, he said it like it was a size that came origionally from chevy, but the nonsense about a 30 shot? a 30 shot might be ok for a motorbike, but even small hondas use minimum 75 shots, and that's pathetic.

Now, on gran turismo 4, they wouldnt let big engine cars get anything more than a 50 shot, and certain cars DID have a 30 shot in that game, but anyone who knows cars knows thats a crock of doodie, just like them only allowing smaller engines get displacement increases, and never allowing superchargers to output the same powerlevels as "stage 4" turbos.

I took the copy of Popular Hotrodding that had my car in it with me to a car show to show a friend. I left the magazine on the seat, open to the page with my car on it. Somebody picked it up and looked at it.

They asked me if that's what I wanted my car to look like.

I said, "that is my car".

He said I know they are the same type of car, but do you want yours to be good enough to get into magazines?

I said "That is my car in that magazine. My name is Brian." He tossed it back into the seat, said Oh..., shrugged his shoulders, and walked off.

As he was walking off, I asked him where his car was.

He said "I don't have a car in the show".

I said Oh... in the same manner he did and shrugged my shoulders.

Kind of unrelated, but at one of the weekly meets 2 weeks ago, I was standing near a Nova and a kid (had to be about 5yrs old) comes running up and says "LOOK DAD A MUSTANG COOL!". The father said "No, that is a Camaro. Can you say Camaro?"

I just kept quiet about that one while silently laughing inside.

I started calling out one of my bosses about his '69 Judge. Turns out it's the real deal. Carousel Red (orange), White interior, A/C car. Missing all of the original drivetrain though. I thought those were some weird options for a Judge. Bet there weren't a lot with white interiors, or A/C for that matter.

The '67 thru '69 Z-28s came exclusively with a 302. Special block with the letters DZ cast into it.
Starting with the 1970 1/2 Z-28s (designated with the 1/2 because GM was shut down by a long UAW strike that delayed the release until Febuary), the 360 HP LT1 350 was the only engine available. 350s remained standard for the Z-28 thru the 1981 model year, the final year of the 2nd generation body style.

This all reminds me of one of my favorite movie scenes ever:

D.A. Jim Trotter: Now, uh, Ms. Vito, being an expert on general automotive knowledge, can you tell me... what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet, with a 327 cubic-inch engine and a four-barrel carburetor?
Mona Lisa Vito: It's a bull**** question.
D.A. Jim Trotter: Does that mean that you can't answer it?
Mona Lisa Vito: It's a bull**** question, it's impossible to answer.
D.A. Jim Trotter: Impossible because you don't know the answer!
Mona Lisa Vito: Nobody could answer that question!
D.A. Jim Trotter: Your Honor, I move to disqualify Ms. Vito as a "expert witness"!
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Can you answer the question?
Mona Lisa Vito: No, it is a trick question!
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Why is it a trick question?
Vinny Gambini: [to Bill] Watch this.
Mona Lisa Vito: 'Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.
D.A. Jim Trotter: Well... um... she's acceptable, Your Honor.

Wouldn't it be fun to take her to a car show?

Actually, they made over 20,000 Z/28s in 1969 - hardly rare.

    From Jason:
Now do you think car shows is a different thing than the Internet? Both involve some form of interpersonal communication, but they are using different media. Do you think you'd approach it differently if you were on the Net?

I realize some people become "keyboard nasty" when there is no face to face commumication. I dont feel Im like that. I dont think I would of handled it any different. I chose my words carefully and thought I was being nice about it in person. I probably would of been nice about it over the net as well. It just seems funnier in person though

There's a guy who comes to the Adirondack Nationals in Lake George ,with a 72 Suncoupe .According to him it's a 1 of 13 gs Suncoupe.only problem is it's a skylark vincode and even still has Skylark emblems on the back quarters. I talked to a friend of the owner about the issues and things got a little unhappy. i had to walk away.:Comp:

If I recall the 67 Z/28 was a small journal 327 block with a 283 crank to make the 5 litre SCCA displacement limit. I think the 68/69 's were the DZ blocks.

I won't enter my cars in a show , but when we take the Sportwagon [w/GS Stage 1 markings] to shows as observers , it's fun to hear the comments of people in the parking area , usualy it's " they didn"t make many of those Stage 1 Grand Sport Wagon"s " yep none !
If ignorance is bliss , theres a lot of happy people at car shows . :beers2:

Jason, for those of us outside NY... the NY cars actually have a windshield registration sticker with the Vin# on it?

In PA we have safety inspection stickers on the windshield, and if you want to read the Vin# on the back of them you need to stick your whole torso into the car.

Did you violate the dude's car to read the Vin# off the back of the registration sticker? Or is it on the front of the sticker?

Yards, in NY the VIN is clearly printed on the front of the windshield sticker.

I dont violate cars, just the opposite sex
