Im starting to get good at this! Seems someone is always getting mad at me at car shows. Same friend with me as last time. He's starting to get a kick out of it

So Im going down the row of cars and I see a grabber blue 71 Boss 351 Mustang. Awesome car. 1 of 1806. Solid lifter 351 and a 4 speed. I like these cars alot so I gravitated towards it. First thing I did was look at the VIN on the NY registration- 1F02M. Wrong. All Boss's were R codes. Should read 1F02R. So its a clone. Nice car none the less. I see someone standing near itand I ask if its his car. He says yes. I tell him "Nice car. I really like it. You almost had me fooled" . He asks what Im talking about and says that its a real Boss. I tell him that it cant be because the VIN says M not R. Then it gets interesting. He says to me "how do you know what the VIN says? You cant see it" Which was correct. The VIN plate was hidden by some small car show plaques. I tell him that the VIN is on his registration. Ooops! He must of forgot about that! As I walked away, I looked back and he was reading the registration on his windshield.

I didnt think much of it but in looking back, he had the VIN hidden for a reason. He knew it was a clone but was passing it off as a real Boss for whatever reason. I'll be curious if I see the car next time if he'll scrape off the registration sticker when he displays it.

I really have to start keeping my mouth shut at car shows.

My dad had a real 69 gto judge. Sent off and got the documentation and always had it laying on the dash for everyone to see. Still people at car shows would walk by and announce fake all the time. Very nerve racking.:Dou:

I can only say I respect you more. I have what will be a clone, and don't intend to pass it off as anything else! (actually just want to make it mine)

Same here. I plan on making my Skylark a Stage 1 clone, and if someone asks if it's real, I'll tell them the truth!

You need to tell your friend to carry a video camera and get this stuff up on Youtube!

I normally will not say anything either. Many people are not hiding anything and just can't afford a very rare car. I don't want to insuinate that an owner is trying to lie when in fact he may not be. So, I just say nice car and go on. But, if he had something over the VIN on purpose I might let him know it didn't work.

    Good Job:TU:
It's nice to hear that people still enjoy going to car shows :Brow:

I've been asked a couple times if my Century ia a real Stage1 car, never felt the need to try and BS anyone. The Century is not a Stage1 car, the emblems replaced the factory 350 emblems.
But it does have a 1970 455 Stage1 motor that I ruined by stroking etc.

My blue Boss reads 1F0R. First thing I looked for when I bought it 3 years ago. Nice car but they sure drive and handle horrible and you can't see out of them very well.

Thats why I was careful in my wording to him. Thats exactly what I wanted to convey. I would never just come out and say "fake" or be rude about it. I tried to choose something that would convey the fact that we both knew the deal.

What bothers me about the whole situation is, why? Why try and pass it off as a real car when its so blatently obvious to anyone that knows Mustangs? Whats the mindset here?

Plus the guy looked like a real tool...

Nice! They are really sweet cars. The 351 is considered my many the "best Boss". Gotta love those aircraft carrier Mustangs!

If Jennifer ever sees your car at a show, you'll have a cute little blonde sitting in the passenger seat wanting a ride!

I have a sign that I put on my car at shows clearly stating that it is GS made up to look like a GSX. It includes a GSX ad from a 1970 magazine, a list of what came with the GSX package and what was changed to make my car a "GSX".

Believe it or not, even after reading the sign, I've heard people say that "Buick never made a car like that". Why would I go to the trouble of documenting the fact that my car is a copy of a car that never existed?

Cudo's for calling out the Mustanger! I've been around that group too long to give any of them any quarter. Once you have a story to tell about someone being duped into buying a clone, recreation or fake and paying ALL the money for a REAL car it makes you less tolerant of those what continue to try and continue the deception.

And to do it with a 71 Boss 351 is his choice and he will be able to continue for longer because the level of interest in these cars is smaller that the 65-70 cars. What personally irks me the most is he in all probability has a lot of NOS parts on the car that IMHO should go on a real car and now simply won't ever get there.

Here's a story you may like: At a large local show I used to go to in North Jersey there is an AAR Cuda that shows up pretty often. The car is a nice car in it's own right but the owner displays a magazine article about it on the dash board. Problem is the article lists the Vin# of the one they shot and the car displaying the article has a different Vin!!!:Dou: Why would anyone take credit for another's accomplishments???
