Yeah, it was kinda hard to see what was going on from those pics, wasn't exactly sure what I was looking at. So maybe an adjustable prop valve for just for the rear then so the fronts come on first?
Het Derek... as far as I can muster information, theres no prop. valve on the 4 wheel drums... we'll hafta wait for an exspurt to enlighten us! The rear shoes are 9x2" and the fronts are 9X3"... cast iron drums. The brakes are now at a good 95%... probably need another blood letting for some minor bubbling. The whole brake debacle sucked. A gal I dated in highschool had a 1962 biscayne and her dad put a dual MC on it... no complications in 1973. Its Mein Kampf. So on to the show in Valders today. A town of 976 that does a LIONS club car show. Some neat stuff. Look for the 72 STAGE II. The guys from Green Bay... Is he on board here? The car (skylark??) is in full original patina. A few bombers for Luke Skywalker (big sky country kinda guy!) and a few for Frank St.Elmo's fire. YIKES! The 442 has a tremec 5 speed. Gonna be a bunch of pics with just a little narrative, so pay attention... ws
Any exspurts care to take a stab at the 31 model A?? NOT the chevy, THE MODEL "A"... The last GNX is the original BAD DAD from Lockport Il. This guys owned the car since 1990 and just did a paint job... Nice! Shout out to "Not so fast" Eddie G. from Lockport. Say howdy to him for me woodja Nick? ws
Thanks for the pix, Bill! Wow...that's some nice stuff for a hick town I never heard of. Really nice under the hood of that 442 and the Stage 2. PS...you cars look great sitting together with the matching plates!
OK, here's another guess why your rear brakes lock up before the fronts start to work; You hooked up the smaller reservoir closer to the front of the car to the front brakes and the larger reservoir that is closer to the brake peddle that gets pressurized first to the rear brakes? The larger reservoir should be hooked to the front brakes and the smaller one to the rear or your rear brakes will lock up before the fronts start to work.
Ive always heard conflicting stories (even in print) that the front is the rear and the rear is the front. I actually followed the routing from the service manual. This is a 1969 4 wheel (bale wire type) drum brake MC, and now for a bolt down top type from a 67-68(?)... Both have equal sized pots. I checked rotauto and I, ah, never mind... ws
Can't tell from the picture, is the front of the MC hooked to the rear and the rear of the MC hooked to the front? Shouldn't matter that the reservoirs are the same size, the rear reservoir should produce pressure first.
I will investigate further... right now I am painting the living room LOL... I am 99% sure I followed the hydraulic schematics when I routed the lines. Ill C&P the page outa the '72 service manual I have (maybe the '64 too), but this is what I got outa the book... ws
Not sure if that image can be seen or not because some of the copy and paste pics that I have posted didn't show up? Anyway this diagram says the primary reservoir is the rear one and the secondary one is in the front. Here is the link for the pic that might or might not be visible, the second pic from left to right; https://www.google.com/search?q=master+cylinder+diagram&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS757US757&oq=master+cylinder+&aqs=chrome.3.69i57j0l5.20649j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Did some more digging and found the same diagram you posted and that is the single only one that has the front reservoir for the front brakes that I could find. If that is supposed to be right for the year car that is from, the reman people must of lost the memo that it is supposed to be the opposite of possibly every other MC made and used the hydraulic cylinder for the opposite that it is supposed to be? If the rears are locking up, it might be worth a try to swap the lines to see if either the diagram or the reman place got it wrong or if you have bigger problems to sort out?(after you're done painting of coarse) But if you even look at the diagram you posted it shows that the fitting connected to the rear reservoir is pressurized first then the more the peddle is pushed pushes on the spring that will eventually push on the front piston that should apply pressure to the secondary brakes on the rear wheels.
I think yer on to something. I havent been able to find any info cast in stone yet, but I will double check the book in a day of two. Hearing test tomorrow (64 YO with 30+ years in a power plant, guns, hot rods, tug boat engineer etc) puts me in the ball park for being a deaf mute. Well deaf anyway. I think the ears are kinda OK, but miss a lot of what Pats talking about. Hmmm. Saw the Rolling Stones in 1972 at the Amphitheater in Chicago. We sat in front of a column of speakers that was 30 feet tall. It was so loud our hair was literally blown back. I do kinda remember Jumpin' Jack Flash. Anyways, Im gonna look into the brake deal BEFORE I do any painting. Right now they seem OK. If I do a panic stop (peel in) the rears lock up first. ws
WHEW!!! Been spending the last 4-5 days painting inside the house (getting ready for the winter hiatus into the man cave for the season for Buick work), and Pat has now exonerated me. So in between coats, I've been catching up on a bunch of past due forum reading. From the sanctity of my own personal mancave and computer, I am going to publicly apologise for and bounds crossing that may have come from my direction. Sometimes I have to wonder where peoples' heads are (including yerz truly) like where the Rare Burger thred went among others. Im gonna spend the day putting all the painting stuff away, and theres plenty there! Then we do a car show in town tonight with both cars and camera in hand. Im sure we'll struggle through dinner with a few grilled Brats with onions and a Coke on the rocks. Have to ad a can of 134A to the BADLAD. Cooling is marginal and the HP side of the POA valve is getting frosty... my kind of trouble shooting LOL... Oh, and I will have a look at the brake line plumbing on the BADLASS today as well. Anyone know what the GM hat pin was from, or want it?? Howz about the clock knob? Origins unknown, but if ya need one... Now take some time to smell the lillies... ws
Did a small impromptu show in town last nite with about 25-30 cars. Got some obligatory shots for Luke and a few other interesting jobs to boot... Even a real HEMI! ws
So being summer and slow on shop work, Pats got me (and her) going to the pistol range for a weekly lesson(for her) to hone those self protection skills. I bought her a Ruger SP 101 .22 6 banger in stainless, and she's gotten quite good with it. She doesnt like the .45 Combat Commander so we've been renting shop guns for grins... She's bent on a .380 S&W Shield EZ... easy to slide, load and shoot for gramma. .380s are a bit pricey for plinking. I rented a Glock 17 in 9mm - Thumbs down, Fave was a Walther CCP in 9mm, another guy had a Glock 21 in 10MM with a slip on stock that blew the hair back (!) and a guy last week let me shoot his .338 Lapua. The next hottest thing to a BMG 50. Sighted for 500 yards, on a 75 foot range got a perfect thorax shot on a silhouette. Applied for my C&C class today. 4-1/2 hour class in October for 89.00 and a 40.00 card from the state. Got jump through the hoops while ya still can before the bunny huggers fork it up for us law abiding citizens. Grrrr... ws Hands up Jarmello... WAYYYYY UP...
Just a few pics from the local Kiwanis car show. Pretty good turn out with a bunch of Ramblers. Hey, Ramblers are people too. One Firebird in here for Cliff Ruggles! The Javelin guy found a piece (a few yards) of NOS cloth for his front buckets. A bit tacky (a la AMC) but the material was 1200.00. So why do we hoard??? The dual quad 4 speed Nomad is a fave of mine. Nice 66 SS396, the 70 SS 454 is a local painters car. He's owned it since '75. Found out the kid with the 3 pedal shirt is a big GM guy. The VistaCruiser 442 is his daily driver in vintage black primer. 455 with chrome headers and Cragars. Nice beater! Old '46 Ford hot rod flat head too. The show is in a city park... nice and shady with a breeze off the lake. Temp was about 73F. Perfect. Brats, plus A&W grub and even the local Hmongs had a stand serving Laotian tacos. Dog, Cat, AND Rat! Scrumptious! Before ya know it, itll be mancave time again. Winter clocks in about Oct. 15th up here. Cant wait to get started on the BADLASS. ws
Much to my regret, after a 6 year tenure and 13,000+ views on this thred alone, I find its time to move on. I make a comment on a given topic and its deleted being deemed too political, or being critical of forum rules. I am not one to kiss anyone's buttocks, and have enjoyed my stay here, however, being a practitioner of freedom of speech, and even starting my own boat forum under the guise of ZERO CENSORSHIP, I find it appalling to have a moderator take it upon himself to enforce the rules as they seem fit to do. I am not now, nor have I ever been a "YES" man. To all the great guys Ive met here and been helped by and helped myself, I find this a difficult decision to make. Censorship is a matter of a sole individual making a decision of whats good or bad; thats an act of totalitarianism; Rather the issue at hand should be brought between the forum owner(s) and ALL moderators and arbitrarily decided whether or not to delete a post. Drop the striped jacket and plaid pants. Some people are nothing more than used car salesman. I have a certain disdain for people that are always right, with little or no room for concession. So girls, when you change the oil, try popping off the blue rubber hand prophylactics and absorb the God given minerals we use with fervor. Go get a manicure with nail polish. Brake cleaner is a wonderful solvent for taking that polish off and getting down to the task at hand. Enjoy your hobby. Its been great. If anyone cares to communicate with me on a personal level, please feel free to email me on my private line. Right now my blood is at a par boil level and I may just say the WRONG thing. I dont burn my bridges; rather I keep them in order. Bill Stephan yachtsman36@charter.net
