It is sometimes easy to pass a law, but horribly difficult to actually implement it. Quite a few years ago Massachusetts passed a law requiring a standard bumper height. If you want some fun, sit by the side of a Massachusetts road and see how that worked out.
One thing to consider is that states like New York and California have severe traffic issues - try heading through NYC on 95 during rush hour. LA has monumental traffic issues as well. There has to be some solution to the air pollution problem in these and many other metropolitan areas. It could be that there will be a breakthrough in engine emissions that will render laws like these moot anyhow. As JW wrote, many of us will be looking at the grass from the wrong side before petroleum-fueled cars and trucks are gone.

I think the car manufacturers have no choice but to say ‘we’re going electric’. If their competitors actually succeed they’ll be in a bad spot. If they fail, they all fail and the government will extend the date and bail them out if needed. If they all unite and say ‘no’ to electric then the government will ruin them.

Seems kinda relevant but lmk if my automotive related threads aren't or maybe just make a rule that anything not Buick specific is off limits.

Maybe not. If they make ev's, they don't have to worry about pollution or mpg. As much as you I don't like ev's, we are a very small group of gear heads. The majority of people under the age of forty could care less about cars. When I was in school, (I graduated in 81), almost everybody , including the girls were into cars. The US economy was based on the automobile. Not anymore. The majority of people don't care or even think about gas or electric vehicles. Several of my buddies have kids over 16 that don't even care about getting a drivers license. My niece is 30 and she races a dragster, but she could care less about her daily driver. Most places that she goes are within walking distance and if her and her husband are going to drink, they Uber. In the 80's, US car manufactures started making fwd vehicles and vehicles the nobody wanted. This is what the younger generations have grown up with. If you talk to most people, they just don't care, one way or another.

evs are just as harmful as fuel is the sad thing and not user friendly for long hauls and difficult to set up a charging network that is user friendly as well. however hydrogen is there plant based fuels are there and its just getting shut out because politics are in the ev car pockets. both are much more user friendly. you can fill a tank in seconds. hydrogen has similar range as gas takes seconds to fill up and plant based can run on current engines with minor modifications.

If EVs can be used like ICE cars are now (family vacation, 500-700 miles, recharge in 20 minutes), and that level of development comes from the market not the government’s intervention, I’ll be a fan. I have no problem with my daily being an electric appliance as long as it works without the current limitations EVs have. I just think (1) our infrastructure isn’t up to it and dumping money on it won’t get everyone there, (2) replacing ICE cars won’t net much benefit when all the factors are considered and (3) no matter what the future holds, currently our car companies’ hands are tied. They have to put on the costumes and dance to stay in the king’s favor.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that automakers aren't willing to spend billions of dollars developing new internal combustion technology if the writing is on the regulatory wall.

It has nothing to do with what the consumer wants.

I don't think biodiesel will scale without seriously impacting the land used to grow food. Much like ethanol subsidies somewhat encroach on the land used to grow edible corn.

Hemp grows in land that most food plants (corn as a example) dont grow well in..

Ah, there is that. We grow a lot of hemp in KY. There's one field on the outskirts of Louisville that has a fence and a sign that says it is hemp, it won't get you high. That stuff grows like a weed.

Dano, you do know the definition of insanity? Right? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.:)

Based on past experience, this thread is eventually heading for the crapper, yet guys keep creating them. I'd rather talk about Buicks.

14 years may not be realistic but any plan needs a time frame to be successful. A hard goal like this will also motivate the private sector to invest in this project as well.

I recall Nicola Tesla was working on something along those lines over 100 years ago before all his research documents "disappeared".

That said, rebuilding roads to handle this may be cost prohibitive, and would likely be handed off to all road users. Interesting concept though.

Not a toll but a fee is already being considered in the giant Infrastructure Bill being proposed... Currently listed as a feasibility study.

SEC. 3001. STRATEGIC INNOVATION FOR REVENUE COLLECTION.
    (a) In General.—The Secretary shall establish a program to test the feasibility of a road usage fee and other user-based alternative revenue mechanisms (referred to in this section as “user-based alternative revenue mechanisms”) to help maintain the long-term solvency of the Highway Trust Fund, through pilot projects at the State, local, and regional level.

Here it is if you want to read the entire phone book:
