simple man.. when you get the urge.. do something productive... do stuff to keep your mind off it! go wax the car or set the timing again... take up a new hobby... make model cars or something for example..

oh, and GOOD JOB! glad you're trying to quit.. even if its the 3rd or 20th time... atleast you make the effort! some people won't even try.. have a little faith in yourself and be confident about it.. if you have a family... just think, they'll be proud of you too, and your extended family, US! we'll be proud of you as well

Someone in my class did a speech on gum last year and noted that it can help to control cravings.

my dad tried the patch... i guess it worked faily well but he had very vivid dreams (which it stated as a sideeffect on the box!) ... it was hilarious hearing some of the stuff he dreamed about.. very wild lol... it's almost like an illegal drug i think LOL

At the risk of being depressing , morbid etc. My wife's uncle just died from Cancer, sick for a year, and her father has been fighting it for over a year. Both cases were directly attributed to smoking.
I won't get into the details, suffice it to say it is a horrible, Sh1++# way to die. There are enough things in the world that will kill you. Don't do it to yourself.
Good luck, and if you must smoke something...:3gears:

I burried my mother-in-law, two uncles, and an aunt that died from smoking. stay smoke free, and your lungs will heal. either start running, or walk briskly and you'll see how much easier it is ,when you quit smoking. good luck.:TU:

Pretty wierd. I was talking more about chewing gum such as Trident or Extra. But the dream thing was just wierd.

Smoking would ruin my lifestyle completely. I am very proud of my athletic achievements in sports, especially hockey. PLUS if my Dad found out then I wouldn't see the light of day for a long time. And my project car, forget about it.

    quit smoking

thanks everyone for the words of encouragement! ive never understood us smokers. we pay 4 or 5 bucks for a pack of cigarettes with our hard earned money, to destroy our health and to eventually die a miserable death. we all realize this, yet smokers do it anyway! i quit smoking cold turkey tuesday morning and ill just take it one day at a time. at least ive had the sense never to smoke in my gsx!

    Quit Smoking

Your the only one who can help to quit smoking !

There are all kinds of advice, all sorts of statistics, and many many
programs and devices to aid in stopping the nicotine habit. It took me 4 tries over twenty years to give it up. A two week stay in hospital for a non smoking related incident convinced me that if I could stay smoke free for two weeks then why bother getting back into the 'habit'. That was about 10+ years ago - so long that I have a hard time remembering when I quit. You've got 3 days into two weeks so hang in there and remember your the only one who decides the outcome. If it doesn't work, (and it may not), then try it quitting again! an again! and again! - till you succeed!
Just being concerned about quitting is a positive step in the right direction.

Ex smokers are the most obnoxious about other smokers...I am one and it is true....I had a heart attack at age 38 due to smoking 3-4 packs a day. Started smoking when I was 14. I was the most rude smoker imaginable. At the hospital with my heart attack, my heart stopped and it took 2 shocks to get me back...most people don't live through it. I never touched another cigarette. When I smoked, I enjoyed every one I ever smoked. If anyone could have made me realize how bad I smelled and how bad the smoke smelled I might have quit...It has now been over 10 years and I have no desire to smoke. STOP NOW!
    Good Luck.

My grandpa smoked for 36 yrs and he is now 65 and still alive. He said the only way to quit is if you really want to. He said he quit in 92 for good, and it took him a total of 2 weeks and 3 days to quit he said. Feel confident and make sure you WANT to quit. patches will only work if you want to quit. or any Non smoker products, as so my grandpa said. I dont smoke and never will. And that's a promise:Smarty: But it's a good idea to quit. I wish you good luck on quiting:beer

My mother just decided yesterday to try to stop smoking. She has smoked for nearly 50 years. The coughing and wheezing has finally gotten here attention as to how bad this habit is! She visted a professional yesterday who told her to stay away from chewing gum and hard candy. Once the sugar craving doesn't get satisfied, he said a carb. craving will appear. Watch the carbs too. According to him, a high percentage of men will gain much weight in the first 6 weeks after stopping. Really watch it for these 6 weeks and maybe it will be easier after that. One cool thing he stated to her was, by the 3rd or 4th day after stopping, you can take a bath, then dry off with a white towell. Most, will notice the towell being a brown color where nicotine is working out of the body through pores in the skin. I am proud of her, and I will say the same for you. Wanting to is half the battle!!!! Good luck!!!

I've cut down a few times, and quit once. I started up again, but have learned a few things from the experience.

One thing I noticed is eating more - no, not some Freudian oral fixation. If you eat enough, your body wants to relax and digest the food. The relaxation part calms you (I beleive it is some chemical released by your body). So basically, you have to worry about replacing one addiction with another.

(Plus if you start smoking again, you don't seem to lose the weight you gained  .)

After about a week the physical addiction is broken, so you are left with the psychological aspects. Try to find other ways to deal with stress. For me, working on my Skylark always preoccupied me from smoking, eating, and anything else, LOL. So when you have that craving, be flexible - instead of ignoring it, replace it with something healthy.

Several years ago some psychologists did a study to find out why people who use smoking cessation products/techniques end up relapsing after a short time. Questioning whether people could actually quit. They found those who quit the old fashioned way - will power - had more long term success or permanent success.

This study also found that these people quit an average of 7 times before they quit for good. So don't get discouraged if you mess up. You'll eventually get it right.

Now, if I can only take all this and apply it to myself........:Dou:

Maybe a group of us fellow Buick lovers all quitting smoking at the same time, AND lending each other support?

OK, I ADMIT to needing HELP (support). But I DO want to stop!:Do No:
