    New Shop !!!!

    Hey Rick , Congrats !!!
Beautiful looking piece of land too boot !!! Kinda like paid $xxx, xxx for the shop and got the great grounds around it :bglasses: Great score !! Hope you and the family enjoy making it your place ! We've been on our 5 acres for three years now and haven't stopped building / landscaping or decorating .
We're getting REAL close to finishing the major stuff . about 800' of fence left and new gates and we'll be stylin' :bglasses: Finished our Gazebo / Entertainment area July 4th . It's got power , t.v , stereo ,BBQ , screened in , soon to have plumbing and water with sink , counter & cabinets .
Hey when you get to building a bench etc . If you'de like a few tips let me know .
I use white countertops for my 12' bench . Super Tough , a splash back to keep all the little trinkets from hitting the floor as well as a rolled edge at the front , the white really returns the light and the counters clean up easy .

    Again, Congrats
    Steve & Chilli

    Thanks everyone. :beer

Bruce, I just won a banner auction on eBay, and am bidding on another. Do a search... I think there's currently another one too.
....just don't bid against me! :pp :beer

Thanks Kelly. But it's not drywall. That would have been too much work. I used styrofoam. It was easy to hang, and should help insulate better too. I've talked with a few people who've used it, and it sounds like as long as you keep the birds from pecking at it, it'll be OK. :pp

Doug, the soffit in the overhangs is vented all the way down both sides of the building, and I kept the R19 rolled insulation a few inches back from the soffit. Do you thikn I need vents up top too?

Mike, sorry, but I have no idea who built the building. It wasn't a "standard" package as far as I know. The previous owner told me he had it built extra tall for his wifes school bus, and had them add the porch too.
I think you should go with the drag strip idea! :TU:

Steve, Your entertainment area sounds awesome!
The workbench is in the plans. I plan to put a workbench all the way across the back wall, and cabinets above it. I wish I could afford to buy countertops and real cabinets right now, but I'm going to have to build something. I have some ideas, but I'd love to hear any pointers or tips you have. :TU:

I had to take a break from the shop for awhile and upgrade the deck on the house. The previous owners had a pool at one time, and the deck was set up for it. Our insurance company gave us 30 days to "fix it" because it was a health hazard the way it was. Aparently, one of our friends could fall off it before and sue us or something. Anyways, we've been here almost 5 weeks, so I thought I better get it fixed. This was my project last weekend and even still tonight. I have a few more hours to go, and to add some low voltage lighting and it'll be done.. (before and after pic below)

Bryon... I can't image how much it would cost in a place like CA. Land around here is pretty affordable, allthough this place is really more than we can afford. But we'll find a way. :Dou:
Steve had the right amount of x's in his post above. But I guess thats not really much of a clue... :pp

Oh, I almost forgot.... I think I've been real lucky!
Earlier I said I was going to order my heater today.....

Well, one of my friends stopped over this weekend and we were out in the shop talking. I was telling him about the heater I was going to get....
He manages a Monroe Muffler, and they use Infrared heat in all their shops. Last winter, when they went to fire up the heaters for the first time, one of them blew fire out the end of the tube. Instead of even looking at it, they replaced BOTH heaters with new ones. He said I could have both of the old ones if I would come get them out of his way.

I went and got them tonight. It looks to me like a bird (or a mouse) built a nest inside the one that blew fire out of it. It might be a simple as cleaning them up real good, and converting them from Nat Gas to Propane and I'll have FREE heaters!

I want to get them "gone through" by professionals first though. But even if it takes $400 in parts to get one good one out of the pair, I'll still be quite a bit of money ahead!

Looking closer at your pic's it looks like you already have a ridge vent. As long as the air has a way in ( soffit vents) and a seperate way out ( some form of hole in the roof) your good to go.
    Beautiful building :TU:

Your "garage" is bigger than my first house. Very nice indeed!

Reminds me of Rule #1, which applies to both houses and garages; "Your stuff always expands to fill any and all available space".

Man the Deck looks Fantastic . Not bad for a Gearhead :Brow:
Will you eventually be putting in Hydraulic Lifts ?
    I'd kill for 14' + walls !!
Here are a few tips on work benches .....
Stand with your elbow bent at 90degs. Measure distance to floor . Build bench 1" lower, really makes for a comfortable stance .
The White Counter Tops I mentioned are about $65-70.00 for a 12 ' section with straight ends . You can also get them with Right or Left 45deg. cuts to make benches that will go down other walls . These counertops are rugged .

Equipment Stands ........ (Grinders , Polishers , Vices etc.)
Go to a local heavy Truck Repair/ Tire Repair Shop and ask for scrap " Budd Style " wheels .(usually can pick them up for free) Build Stands with 1 1/2" angle steel bolted thru lug holes ,use 2" OD & 2" ID black pipe (sched. 40 ) 2' of 2" ID with a 3/4" hole and nut welded to it for a lock bolt .weld this to your angle steel . get 36" of 2" OD pipe weld
a square or round piece of 1/4" flat plate to mount equipment to .
Go to local "El Cheapo" store and buy a few 3/4" box end wrenches . Cut them and weld to lock nut for quick height adjustment . Get yourself some scrap tubing and cut 1" sections and weld to stands on the mast or to mounting plate to hold various tools of destruction . ie. hammers ,clamps etc . Piant em' to choice to make em' purty .

Need a Metal Chop Saw ???????.............
    Want "Real Accuracy" ???
Get yourself a Reconditioned 10-12" Mitre Saw get a Metal Cutting Disk to fit .
Then get 24" of 3/16" - 1/4" x 3" Flat Stock fit to the saw get 4 5/16" bolts 1 " long . Drill 1/4" holes and tap for 5/16" threads after fitting plate to saw to find best location for bolts . attach to saw in ONE PIECE flush grind bolts
cut slot in steel using right and left 45deg+ setting . There yah be . Super Accurate Metal Chop Saw .
Caution : If you do not put this plate in place the saw will "chuck" hot, sharp
pieces of metal at you . I know it happened to me .
These are a few tips I've found to work GREAT around the shop .

One More Tip : Common Sense Actually .
    Invest in a C0 -2 Fire Extinguisher about $125.00 5lb.
Ever see what a Dry Chem. Extinguisher does to an Engine ?????
    NUFF SAID !!

PS. - Semi Truck Brake Drums can also be used to make the stands

Update... I'm finally starting to get close to done with this project.
After getting prices on parts for othe radiant heaters I picked up, I just couldn't justify using them. I'm having a "regular" hanging heater (Reznor) installed. I've already hired a contractor and am just waiting on his schedule to get here and do it. Probably within the next 2 weeks.

I have a few more benches to build, and to come up with some type of cupboard doors or curtains for my higher shelving/cupboards, and to install an opener for the big door and I think that'll do it.

You can barely see them in this pic... but there's a couple awesome liscense plates from Dane/Beth hanging above the trophies. Thanks again Dana and Beth!

The "tins" have my 2 favorite things on them... Buicks and SRV! I'd hang 'em in the bedroom if I thought I could get away with it.

Today would be great.... if you came around 11PM tonight. :Dou:
We have 2 family gatherings to attend and another tomorrow. We're leaving in about 5 minutes.

I definately have to make it to one of you "Westerners" next gatherings over there. When's the next WTF party?
Either that or I'll have to throw one myself next year. :Brow:

Bill .. Thats why I'm building so many shelves/cubbys/benches. Hopefully to keep the floor empty as much as possible. Plus I'll keep the shed full of the "crap" I don't use often. But your probably right... I'll fill it up in a few weeks. :Dou:
Mighty fine looking shop you have there too! :TU:

    Happy holidays :beer
