Rick, I think the heating system is a Infrared radiant heating. One name brand is Co Ray Vac and there are a few others. I did a search on Google and did come up with some matches. We have them at work and they a real nice job of heating because the heat everything in the shop which then also radiates heat.

    Hope this helps.

Dana, since I don't need a bigger garage anymore... and I'm not trying to sell any cars... I just don't know what to put there. :Dou: :pp

Yeah Lon, you've seen my old place. it took 15 minutes to find a place to set a beer down. Maybe thats why they never got warm

50buick, I'm in Tiffin, about an hour south of you. I've met about 7 or 8 members right here in northern Ohio, and I know there's alot more of us around here.

Bruce, thanks for the tips. I'll definately be looking into it. It's starting to get cold already and theh snow will be flying before we know it. :(

    Thanks Don :TU:

No. Sorry. I forgot about that kind of radiant heat. This kind that I am talking about has a heater with a blower on one end and the "chimney tube" runs the length of your shop and then exits the building. The "tube" has a deflector that deflects the heat downward thus heating the material masses in the building. Check with a local heating/air conditioning business. They should know what I'm talking about if you explain it to them. I'll see if I can find a pic and post it on here some time.

Yes!!! Thanks Bruce. That is what it is Rick. Infrared radiant heat.

I've done some research and found some infrared heater manufactuers that are little more local than Co Ray Vac.
I've only got pricing from one place so far, and they're quoting me between $1,000 - $1,200 for everything but installation, depending on what options I add to the heater.

    Does that sound reasonable?
Seems reasonable to me. I think a "regular" 200K Btu hanging gas heater would be around $800 or so, and from everything I've been reading it wouldn't be near as efficient (or comfortable) as the infrared heaters.

Next thing I need to search for is material to put up for a ceiling. I'm thinking white steel siding will be the cheapest (and simplest) way to go. I could then just blow insulation into the "attic" after the ceiling is up. The shiny white surface would be nice and reflective for lighting too.

Hi Rick! Ditto on the nice garage. How high is it to the trusses?
Your not to far from me and me being a carpenter/drywall hanger, I suggest 5/8" fire rated drywall which is very common even in garages. At Home Depot prices it will cost about $400 for the drywall ( you need about 34, 4'x12' sheets ). They even rent the machine for the blow in type insulation.
    Hope this helps,Kelly.

    Hi Kelly
    It's 14' to the trusses.
I wish it was either 16'+ or maybe 9'.
At 14' it's not high enough to add a loft, but it's so high that I'll need alot more lights, more space to heat, hose reels, cord reels, and trouble lights will have to be extra long... etc... :Dou:
But at least I'll have plenty of headroom for a lift in a couple years! :Brow:

I've been working this weekend trying to get all the crap organized, boxed up, and moved out of there so I can start the ceiling maybe next weekend.

I think you're right about drywall being the best option (as far as cost)
But thats going to be a real pain getting it up there. :(
Do drywall jacks go that high?

Other than a drywall jack, I suppose I could make a fork lift attachment and borrow a forklift from work or something. We also have a scissor lift at work, but we'd have to lift the sheets 7' just to get them on top of the scissor lift.

A drywall panel lift with extension will go that high. I have a regular panel lift that goes up to about 11'6". One day I'll buy the extension piece for it. Heck, I might even be up for a road trip!

That does sound reasonable. Like I said, a bit more expensive to start but worth it in the long run. And I don't think there is a whole lot to installing it. It mostly hangs from the ceiling on hooks and chains. The only thing I think I'd have someone do is hooking up the gas line since codes are involved.

Very cool. Still looking for one up here in Calgary. This city is awful for garage space.

I plan to order my infrared heater on Monday. I was going to do it today, but the guy I've been working with is out until Monday. :Dou:

I've got the ceiling done, and am about halfway done with the walls. I decided to go with (R19) rolled insulation stapled between the rafters, and then added 1.50" thick styrofoam (R6) as the "finished" ceiling. The walls will get 3" of the same styrofoam and then paneling around the lowest 8'.

A few pics of the carnage so far.... :)

    getting there!
It's already MUCH cooler in there on hot days. I can't believe the difference it's making on temperature. Hopefully it heats in the winter as well as it cools in the summer. :TU:

I'm in the market for a HUGE Buick banner to hang on the back wall up by the ceiling...
Anyone have any leads? (hopefully not very expensive??)

You should consider having a way to vent your attic space if you don't already.

What kind of building is that if you know (manufacturer & model #). I've been looking at Morton. I like the style you have there with the extra height and the deck. Very close what I was thinking about.

I'm looking at buying some acreage nearby my lake place in Mississippi, and that is just what the doctor ordered. I found a 73 acre hunting parcel for sale that I'm considering. Big enough for a drag strip actually, but there's some swamp land on the back 40.
