You know what everyone, I made a mistake. I got that cam used and then I used it for LIKE ONLY A DAY and then is sat on my shelf for years. I honestly thought it was OK.
I got home from work 3 hours later than I anticipated last night only to get on and see some useless form email from Paypal that didn't help me at all. If I had been given a chance to fix it then it wouldn't be in that predicament with Paypal. Then I read the nasty P.M's forwarded to me by another board member (who I'll leave anonymous) from Al and I just couldn't deal with this crap anymore last night. I am getting met with belligerent childish argumentative crap from Al who think's his crap doesn't stink. I made a mistake. I am owning it and trying to fix it. What else can I do? Why the hostility?
I am tired and not in the best mood to be honest so I am sorry if I am shooting my mouth off and offending anyone. I am working two jobs and I took today off because I gotta put brakes on my truck and my buddy's truck broke down and now I gotta help him with that. I need a damn break. I have been checking this board virtually everyday for several years and one thing I have always liked about this board is how friendly and helpful everyone is here. I hope to see it stay that way. Anyone who feel's I should delete my profile after all of this just let me know.

Jumping straight to paypal was a real crapweasel thing to do and you shouldn't have sold that cam.

What really gets me is the superior attitude though. If so confident that your knowledge & experience trumps the seller so much you should at least be pleased that the seller is seeking 3rd party opinions from folks in this forum. Your experience should tell you that before agreeing to anything you are unsure of ($$) to at least ask questions first.

That said, there was zero wrong with offering to pay shipping back initially. It may seem odd to some but its one way to grease the wheels and get decisions made quicker. I suspect the buyer isnt used to this being interpreted as a red flag and when immediate results were not realized became worried the money wouldn't come. This would all be understandable if it WERE NOT BEING DISCUSSED IN A FORUM.

    Thanks JW!

Here is a few things one should realize about used cams that were not adressed here. This is just my $.02 worth, but its free:dollar: .

First, all blocks are slightly different when it comes to cam/lobe mating patterns due to the lifter bores not being perfectly true from the factory. Lifter bores are off as much as .025" in any direction due to manufacturing tolerances. The cam will usually seat with the lifter and compensate for this, and the cam lives a long life in the engine that is was originally installed.

Second, a used cam, even with the wear as shown in the thread here, may have lasted many more miles in the engine that it was originally installled. If it was installed in a different engine, with slightly different lifter bore variations, it may have failed in 20 minutes..or 20 years...its a crap shoot.

When installing a used cam and lifters in another engine, having the lifters in order from the previous engine is almost mute. The chances of them actually running in the exact same position is nil to none..It is a "feel good" though. I'm not saying to scramble them up, but if it is going to fail, it's from the misalignment more than anything. This is assuaming that all the lifters are convex and the lobes have the correct taper to begin with.

So, I get asked all the time; should I use new lifters on a new cam? Well, check the faces of the used ones, and if they are still convex across the face, run them. Just place the face of one against the side of another and look at them with a light in the backround. You will see what the face looks like.

As far as the cam itself, simply mic the lobes at the max lift point. They should have .001" taper from front to back of the lobe. If not, the lifter will not rotate properly and it will most likely fail.

If you do install new lifters on a used cam, I would recommend polishing the face with some 600 grit paper on a surface plate or piece of glass. The new lifter may cause unwanted lapping wear on a used cam that now has the protective Parkerizing worn off. If the lifters are the polished type with the Parkerized coating, leave them alone.

Now, if you are taking a cam/lifters from a block that has been BHJ Lifter-Trued and bushed, and they are going into a block that has had the same done, the chances of sucess are great.

We use Shubeck ceramic face lifters in applications like Stock Eliminator where we may try 3-4 different cams on the dyno to find the perfect combination. They are $800 a set, but you can run them on as many different cams as you want. Those things are tough, and a cam failure will cost a LOT more than that.

    Ok, I'll stop now...!

I have used more than one used cam before without problem. One came from here years back. My friends always used them without problems. When you are poor you do what you have to. I even used mis-matched lifters on a used cam because I needed the car running and that's all I had. That engine is still running years later and ran well all the time.
I know cams wipe and used ones have a higher chance of that happening but it's not all that common IMO.

Wow...this turned into a soap opera....I am hesitant to sell here anymore unless I know the guys for a long time. Don't need the hassle, attitudes and such. It's too bad as I have sold things for many years now. I don't always have time to get right back to people as my jobs hours in the winter and I never knowing when I need to get to work keep me from getting on as much as I used to. I sometimes forget to return emails and forget what I was selling at times due to getting minimal sleep and 12 hours of driving time.It seemed an honest mistake and I applaud JW for the resolving of the situation. That's what makes this board great!

Pat, I wouldnt let one or two bad apples scare you off from selling on this board. All my experiences have been really good and I can say that the MAJORITY of members here truely exemplify "fast with CLASS". That being said, I think this was merely a case of a seller who truely thought he had a fine item and a buyer who got a little high-strung when it wasnt up to his expectations. I truely feel that 462bbbcamaro had no bad intentions and that Al got really fired up when he felt he was wronged, and thus the flames spread. Thanks to J.W. this issue is resolved. 462*** dont lose sleep, its a done deal and I feel the majority of the members on this board would have been much easier to resolve the issue with. Al gets his money back, and its all even. Chalk it up as a lesson learned, but dont loose faith in our Buick brethren. They (we) are one of the few resources we have left...

Can one of the mods please lock this up?

Used cam sold that was bad. Heated exchange between buyer and seller. BOARD OWNER steps in as third party. Cam was 'too used'. Seller will refund the money to the buyer. Seller should PM Jim (JW) when the refund is complete.

Please, guys, no more bitching and dragging this on. The 'he said, she said' BS is getting old.
