I recieved this cam at the shop today.

I would tend to agree with Al, this one is pretty used up. It has several lobes showing pitting, which is an early sign that the originally ground surface of the cast iron is worn away, and the pitting of the casting is showing thru.

Todd, you should go ahead and refund Al's money.

I have the cam and lifters, and can send them to you if you wish, but it is my opinion that this one has run it's course. I have no doubt that it came out of a running engine, and worked just fine, but it's days certainly were numbered.

Tough to take a pic with a autofocus digital cam of this, but I did my best with this lobe, you can see the pitting. I must have took 20 pics to get one this good.

When your looking at a cast iron cam for wear, your looking for pitting, and this one shows that on a number of lobes.

That's fair. I thought if it wasn't missing lift and it worked fine it would still work fine in the future. The only time I have had a cam wipe out a lobe, it lost lift fast. Seems to me like I have never seen a used cam without some pitting on it and had them work fine in the past. I wish I had just left it on my shelf. My apologies to Al. I do still feel you could have conducted things better with Paypal and all as you never gave me a chance to make it right. Everybody makes mistakes.

Thank you Jim for your time and mediation. Also, do you have pics of what you would consider a very good used cam as a tool for everyone?

    What was the shipping cost?

That is because of the manner in which you have conducted yourself. I made an honest mistake. I am working on Paypal right now. I'll put another post when it is done.

Todd seriously, you attacked me first. If I may quote you, I didn't inspect every 1/16" of it for cosmetic defects like you did. On a cam 3 things mater 1) Where the lifters have been riding on the lobe. Your second quote, Have you realy looked at a broken in cam. It looks to me like you have no idea were the lifters ride and you do not know what a good broken in cam looks like. Can you tell me when you made that honest mistake? I HAVE BEEN HONEST FROM THE BEGINING

Glad to see Jim step up here and offer a helping hand. Todd, you are not the only person to make a mistake and sell something that you thought was in good shape to only find out you over looked something. I did the same thing with a carb one time and had to eat it. I really thought the carb was in great shape too.

    Thank you John.

Al, that post was argumentative don't you think? I didn't mean what you quoted as an attack. It was my opinion. This whole thing came to this because of the Paypal attack then refusing to send it to me when I still thought it was good. By the way, I feel this was uncalled for "Todd, Read Jims post #22 if you agree this is what we will do. Can you tell me if you have ever worked on cars professionally, or are you a shady tree mechanic ? What is your background ? Can you also tell me when you told me to send it back to you ? All you said was I'll give you your money back. Al". Also, earlier you mooned THIS ENTIRE BOARD for not commenting.

Anyway, I have been on Paypal's site for the last hour. I plan to send you the full refund plus your shipping plus extra to cover the Paypal fee you'll incur when you go to redeem your money. I have looked and looked at the claim and I can't find an option to send the money since it is in review by Paypal claims department. I emailed them and asked how to refund the money and close the claim and it said they would reply within 24 hours. If it doesn't come back tonight, I'll get home from work probably around 8:00 tomorrow evening to finish it. Then we can go about our separate ways.

My intent was never to defraud anyone and I will make this right.

Why would anyone buy a used cam and lifter in the first place, secondly why would anyone try to sell a used cam and lifters...just asking for trouble???

Steve, you're right. I have seen many used cams sell in the parts for sale section so I thought I would too. I have learned a dear lesson with all of this.

John, sorry this has brought grief to you. Hopefully this will all be over soon. Thank you for posting it.

I think I saw this in the dictionary as the definition of "going the extra mile"...

    Nice resolution for all.

Glad it worked out. So 185.00 for used cam and lifters for a new engine? I would spend the extra 100 for new cam and lifters. Thats just me? Too important to go cheap.

Ive been waiting patiently for this to be resolved (I really didnt want to be in the middle of anything). Now that it is, I have to chime in just to say that a real tip of the hat is in order to you Mr. Weise. Volunteering your time and effort in this when you had no real stock in it shows what a class act you truely are. When you made the offer to mediate, I really was hoping they would oblige as I feel (after reading countless posts of yours) that you sir are just about the "E.F. Hutton" of Buick v8s. Had you advised to use maple syrup as motor oil and kool-aid as coolant I would have followed suit. Thanks for yet another conribution to the Buick enthusiast community!

    To answer the question here..

Often times you can save some money buying a used cam and lifters, when those parts have very little time on them.. say in a race car application where it has just a few passes, or a cam and lifter set that was used in a dyno test..

I will have one, maybe two used cams for sale here shortly.. from a dyno test.

A cam that was sold by Kenne-bell, and has been in more or less continuous use for over 20 years or more, probably is worn out.

I have sold a couple used cams on this site and had no complaints. I wouldn't have sold the cam in question in this thread.
