Is that considered "torture" today? :Brow:

If you're gonna be hatin' Mitsus, then we might has well hate Fords, since Hank was an anti-Semite.

And Mercedes too, as they hired some former Nazis after the war.

And might as well be every Brit car, since they would not allow us the autonomy to rule on our own without the King's meddling.

So at what ET does one respect an import? Does it really matter where a car is from to respect an ET?:Do No:

you have to respect speed but the spend so much more money it crazy to make a honda run 12's they gotta throw 10-15k into there car at that rate i can go out and get a fox body or one of them fiero for half that and still beat them. but they argue gas millage but gas millage doesn't get you laid.

Imports are one thing, ricers are another. There is domestic rice. I think the absolute worst ricer I've ever seen was a mustang.

Making a car fast isn't in my book grounds for respect. Any douchebag with money can pay to make a car fast. I wont respect someone just because they're a car enthusiast (if they're even that and not trying to boast and brag with their vehicle as a status symbol) or even if they built a damn fast car on their own. You can be an amazing mechanic/driver and still be a 100% grade A richard noggin.

As for respecting the cars... how hard is it to make a chevy 350 run 11s? Grab a summit magazine, buy edlebrock heads and intake, get a cam, headers, blammo, you dont even have to really know how to drive and you can be in the 11s. Same thing with a 5.0 mustang. How hard is it to go fast?

A lot of these ricers are getting to the same point. One inventive guy makes a turbo kit for himself and sells it to a bunch of flaming wanna-bes and now you have a bunch of idiots with 11 second hondas, because they had a few grand in the bank and want to be cool like Paul Walker.

There are some really nice and easily respectable imports out there. The skylines and rx7s are the first that come to mind for japan. The germans are demigods at making absolute beasts, like the AMG CLK-GTR from 97-98, to porche GT2s, and that veyron thingy (it's german right?). Pasta rockets (ferarri, lamborgini, and pagani) dont impress me, mainly because of their price for what you get which is basically a name that says "I DONT KNOW CRAP ABOUT CARS BUT I HAVE MONEY!", and the fact that they have V-12s with less displacement than most american small blocks, and in some cases, V6s.

I can respect a CRX that runs 12s, even if I hate the way it sounds.

I wont respect a Skyline GTR Vspec 2 with 3 wings on the back, more scoops than a baskin robins, twice the stickers of a nascar, has the lights from an entire dance floor under it's unibody, sounds like a squirrel getting raped when it shifts because they simply HAD to let you know they have a blow off valve, believes that taillights should have as little red in them as possible, and wants to pronounce to the world that it's motor sounds like absolute garbage because it is a tiny motor having to hit twice the RPMs and bang off the rev limiter to keep up with a car that weighs twice as much with half the tech, and even though they dont have a mullet, they decided glass packs were the way to go, with a giant rolled tip or 15 of them so that when their car screams like a girl, you can hear it echo! Oh, and I forgot that the body kits that have more sharp edges than a culinary school.

These are all examples of epic failure. These are the kind of dirtbags that dont know crap about cars who want to impress dirtbags who dont know crap about cars. And it isnt hard to pay money to make them fast, which will REALLY make them feel justified. Egos can lead to some seriously ugly stuff, i swear.

This is the first time I've read this thread because, I suppose, I'm just not interested in ricers as a rule but some of these posts have really made me laugh, and I mean in a good way. They've also brought back some fond memories. I remember putting a set of chrome reverse wheels on my `64 Galaxie when I was in high school. When my grandpa saw them for the first time he asked me where the hubcaps were :Dou:

Same here, most not all of them but alot of them aren't buying good racing parts, they trow a NOS or Turbo system on the engine.
And sometimes it goes really well, but when the finals start almost all of them knock them self out, when they blow up a piston, or trans or the frontaxle at the starting line break and the car hasn't move a inch.
They can be really fast, I have seen them and talked to these guys alot.
But these cars scare me, cause these racers don't really care about safety and I have seen a couple of them lose it at the finishline while breaking.
Even when something blows up, they keep in it cause they want to win the run, and crashing there car cause all the tires were sprayed with there own engine coolant.

I don't understand why you would put that much money into a 4 cyl trying to make it go fast when you could put less in a rwd v-8 and be that much more ahead.

But I can understand to a point where they are coming from. When a lot of you were growing up Chevelles & Fairlanes weren't going for a whole lot. Imagine, on the younger crowd's budget, trying to buy something like that today. Everything's just out of their price range, so they go buy what they can afford. Honda Civics are a dime a dozen so that's what they buy. At one time I had an Acura Integra & whenever one of those kids would see it, they'd say, you should put "such & such" on your car, such as a fart can muffler or those ugly taillights. I'd just laugh and say, why? What would be the point? So really I feel bad that they didn't get to grow up with as many of the cars accessible to them that the older generation did, but it's still no excuse for a lot of what they're doing.

I respect the speed some of the imports can achieve, but with such small, light vehicles, speed should come much easier.

However, If I were ever in a collision, I'd much rather be in a sound, solid car such as american muscle, and not some of these all fiberglass and plastic cars that weigh 1000 lbs and can run 140 mph. NO THANKS....I've heard it said before and I totaly agree, There's no replacement for Torque...I don't really care if I can hit 140mph, as long as I can break your neck on the takeoff....

Personally, I respect any car that can back itself up. The ones I have a problem with are the "posers" that throw a bunch of garbage on their cars such as fart cans and giant aluminum wings and talk a bunch of smack to everyone. Sure buddy! I bet that wing gained you a tenth in the quarter! So that makes it run what? About 23 seconds now? :Dou: Anyway, if a car runs well and it's owner isn't a jackass, I can respect it regardless of what it is, even if it doesn't fit my personal tastes. :beers2:

Most of what I'd consider "rice" to be in my town consists of turbo diesel pickups: lift kits, huge low-profile tires, 5" tailpipes (or worse yet "stacks"), and enough black smoke to drop my cell phone to two bars. Sure, they put a chip in the computer and get some crazy torque numbers, but the trucks just don't move. Theyre too heavy, have too much turbo lag off the line, and the diesels usable RPM spread is too small. It's like taking candy from a baby in my unsuspecting 2WD short box.

I will respect any car if it is tastefully done, functional and fast. That just never seems to happen with the ricers. Show me a ricer that runs 12s and looks tasteful and he will get a nod from me. However, I will never like the look of wide tires on the front and skinnies on the back. There is just something fundamentally wrong looking about that.

    I agree.

Jacked up, centerlines, custom side exhaust, primer grey, huge back tires sticking out of the wheel wells and a bunch of stickers on the lower front fender. Alot of us had this exact car in the 80s. And most of the "adults" thought it was stupid but it didnt stop many of us from doing it.
But I guess this import tuner thing a new trend for a new generation. And I will admit Ive seen a few plain jane imports that were street legal dip into the 12s. Twin turbo 300s, Supras and what not.
As for the others(ricers that look fast but arent), hopefully we can give a few of them some pointers on safety and a lesson or two on raw power and torque.:3gears:
And maybe one of them can explain to me why a stock front wheel drive car needs such a big @$$ rear spoiler.:Dou:

This is my friends 4 cylinder awd 5 speed eclipse GSX. Note the left lane 1/4 mile time on the slip. It was run as it sits in the picture. He's only been on the track for about 5 passes when this time sheet was made and not a great tune. He also spun this car on one run 4-5 times on the track at a later date and lightly hit the wall as the guy before him sprung an antifreeze leak and didn't throw hazards on and nobody noticed he leaked something. When all of one side of your car breaks loose your just along for the ride. This car also has a full nearly factory interior. (gauges and shift knob changed)

I picked 14 seconds so I could include the naturally aspirated Honduhs and such, but really there's such a wide range of cars. I mean, 14 seconds for a Turbo Supra would be an embarassment. I've seen high 9 second stock bottom end, stock 6 speed trans, stock rear Supras. I guess thats why they fetch the prices that they do for a nice unmodified car. Bulletproof. So, I'd say 11's for those, RX-7 turbos, etc. But, I'm no expert on speed. I've never even ridden in an 11 sec car. My 350Z runs high 13's and its the fastest car I've owned and also the first import I've had.

Wow soooo much hate for the Import crowd... but what do you expect on "v8buick.com" Personally I swing both ways, I have both and they both are fun in different ways.

As far as fun on the street traction is king... Spining your tires is cool for a little bit but it just gets tiring when you start spinning and you dont even mean to.

Any car that gives you that push you back in your seat hard pull get my vote...
