I feel kinda sad seeing the condition the car ended up in.
I was hoping it would come out looking like new, but the first few pics I saw with the lid off the vault, I had a feeling the car was toast.
Now after looking through the pics herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/47422262@N00/sets/1320520/show/ I can tell for sure it's TOAST!:ball:

I would have to agree with what someone else posted in an earlier post, the car should be left as-is, and placed on display somewhere. I have a feeling that if you start messing with it, it is going to fall apart.

That Plymouth looks like "Christine" right after the gas station burn scene.

    Ol' Yeller
    My predictions/obsevations.
    First my predictions:
Boyd will change his mind and announce that the car will be "restored" in 8 weeks all documented on a special edition of American Hot Rod. Plans for the car will include dechroming, a Chevy 350 4 barrel engine and a custom set of Boyd Coddington 20" wheels. The interior will be redone in roll and tuck leather and the car will be painted "Plum Crazy" Purple. They won't have to lower it as time already took care of that. During the "restoration" Duane will drive the boys in the shop like a taskmaster on a ancient Roman galley ship causing at least 2 of the guys on the stage to quit in disgust. Boyd will declare them "Dead to me". and forbid their names to be mentioned in his shop ever again. His son will secretly steal half of the crew to modify a Japanese pickup from the '90's which causes Duane to swear even more and drive the remaining crew that much harder to meet their self imposed deadline. Boyd's trophy wife Jo will wear jeans and a T shirt to the unveiling and act like she was the reason why the car was completed. During the "Restoration", Boyd will add a degree of difficulty to the task by taking what is left of the entire crew off to 6 Flags for a "team building" exercise which puts them further behind, causing Duane to swear more and 2 more people to quit.

    My Observations:

    I too, am glad it wasn't a '57 Buick
This proves that even if you don't drive a '57 Mopar it will rust to nothing.
It was a great publicity stunt that captured car guy's attention all over the country even though it took 50 years to accomplish.
As it was a '57 Plymouth that was sacrificed, little damage was done.

    Those guys are idiots......

Whether the '57 was a Mopar, GM, Ford or whatever........it's truly sad to see such a work of art, a piece of American history go to ruin under the intention to preserve it. Out of 4,000 Belvederes produced that year, there can't be too many great ones left to admire. At least if it were a '57 chebby, there were so many made and so many still around that 1 less really wouldn't matter.

Just for those that didn't know, "Christine" was a 1958 Plymouth. There was the Fury, Savoy, and Belvedere I believe. All had the same basic body, but different trim and levels of options.

    Really? :puzzled:

Here's what the IMDB has to say about it (and remember, they have movie connections)...

"Christine was said to be a 1958 Plymouth Fury, which had similar panels and trim to the 1957 model. When the Fury name was introduced, it was essentially a sport and trim package on the Belvedere - notably two doors, gold anodized trim, gold grille and dual four-barrel carburetors. Christine, as shown in the movie, could have been any two door Belvedere with a 318 or 350 engine. Although over 5300 Furys - and far more Belvederes - were built in 1958, they have since become very rare and are now collector's items. There were 13 or 16 (depending on source) Belvederes/Furys smashed in the making of the movie (out of the roughly 25 used during filming), but it is unknown whether they were 1957 or 1958 models, or a combination. In any event, Plymouth enthusiasts were infuriated, although the movie popularized the car and probably saved many of them - in the same way that Back to the Future (1985) did for the DeLorean. In the original Stephen King book, the car had four doors but this was changed to a two-door model when it was realized that there never was a four-door 1958 Plymouth Fury. Although all 1958 Plymouth Furys had Buckskin Beige exterior paint and gold anodized aluminum side trim and grille, the book mentions that this particular car was custom ordered in Ford red."

'57 or '58, its still a cool looking car (not as cool as my Avatar, though!)

    It's a car, what's the big deal?

Ok, I was just kidding. It was not just a car, it was a work of art. It was designed and built by men's hands, sweat and blood. It was made from raw materials that were mined, crafted and assembled by men's hands. As such it was an individual masterpiece that will never be produced again and it's disturbing to me, someone who like everyone else on this site realizes just how special these vehicles are.

That someone didn't have the foresight in 1957 to see how poor the protection of that car was is just amazing to me. We could make TV dinners but we couldn't make a watertight chamber for that car. Sheesh.

Actually, I saw a few cars that looked better than that after going through Katrina.[/QUOTE]

Yep! And I've got 2 of 'em!!!
And they WILL run again!!!!!!:beer :beer

The BIG question is, what would we say if it had venti-ports in her fenders...HMMMM???

Down here we bury 6 ft. above ground (sea-level to y'all). And of course they popped up all over the place...

One more thing..... THE TIRES HELD THERE AIR!!!!!!!

Re: 57 Plymouth Burried in Time capsule

Well, they are hoping who ever the winner is that they will donate the car to the historicle society to be displayed(as is) . Its my understanding that someone guessed the population darn close. If they can locate them or a family member remains to be seen.
A few Tulsa tidbits in 1950 the population was 182k. The savings account they opened with $100 is now worth a whopping $700....The winner will get that as well to do a frame off, err suspension off resto......:Dou:

$700! Is that all it's worth? The winner might not be found. It may not be worth their time to come into the city to pick up $700 plus a rotten car.:Dou:

This thread is interesting, but I get angry the more I read about the car. :blast: :blast: :blast:

Tulsa seems to have had a 50 year publicity stunt that did not seem to really care about the car! How in gods green earth did they expect to stick a car in the ground surrounded by a flimsy turkey cooking bag and concrete and expect it to last? I think the powers that be at that time could have cared less. A concrete tub that a lid just sat on? Duh. No venting, draining, or monitoring system of any kind? Whatever. That car is a POS now, and I could care less what they do with it. It's sad really.

I don't understand people's tastes.........IMO those cars were so much better looking than the '57 chebbies were. You'd think more of them would have been produced and sold. Does anybody know how much more the price was for a new Belvedere compared to a new Bel Air? :Do No:

I think this is interesting, but it is a @@@@ing mopar! Put back in and fill it with dirt! Pull it back out in 50 and see what ya got!
But seriously If any of you have a basement, you will understand where the water came from The floor! Heat on top of the vault would have pulled the water right up in it. Once it had leveled out, the dirt reminits of the covering would act as a way to seal the water in. I say water was in there buy 58-59.
