How many miles are on the trans?

A TH350 shift kit costs under 50 bucks and takes less than 30 minutes to install if the trans is out.

it actually improves them and makes them less likely to break old or new.

+1, a shift kit is one of the best things you can do to an old transmission. Soft factory shift settings are tough on clutches as they actually slip while engaging to give that smooth transition.

Did you paint the carb? It looks like it has black soot on it.

Yes its flat black. When I cleaned it some paint was removed and it looked real bad. Now it looks really cool.:bglasses:

    Purrdy:bglasses:

Youll need to paint the bare metal surfaces around the front cover or the rust will start.

The engine and transmission are in the car and I have a few things already hooked up.
Should be driveable next week if the distributor hold down comes in by then.:3gears:

Looks good:TU: Take your time hooking everything up. Be sure to run an oil pressure gauge and prime the oil pump with a drill before you install the distributer. Also, did you pack the oil pump with Vaseline so the oil pump primes?

I ran an oil pressure guage way back because of some issues so I still have that, I filled the timing cover with oil and spun the pump by hand for a few minutes. Is that priming the pump? I did not pack the oil pump with vaseline, the pump is already in the engine with about 2 quarts of oil in it. Do I need to pull it off?

No, you need to spin the pump with a drill motor, until you see a reading on the pressure gauge. You will feel the drill load up when it primes. You cannot possibly do that by hand. Fill the oil pan first. If the pump does not readily prime, you can pull it apart then, and pack it. I would try priming it first.

You dont have to pull the timing-cover to pack the pump with vaseline.

You just take the filter housing off and pack the vaseline in the gears.
