I switched to Rotella T 15W-40 in the 71 after Salem. Do you guys run 15W-40 year round? Or should I switch to a 10W30 for the winter?

I would definately go with 10W-30 in winter. But.....it tends to be hard to find. At least around here...(Maryland).

You drive your car in the winter? Doesn't NY salt the roads like we do in MI?

IF you use the 15w in the winter it will knock bad on start up. NG!

I use the 15-40 but have an accumulator. When I start mine up in colder weather have no problems. Think I would change to something thinner for cold weather without the accumulator.

I couldn't find the 10W30 Rotella here either, but then I don't drive my 68 in winter either.

The Rotalla T that is out now in parts stores in the new formula. Which doesn't have the good protective heavy metals it had a few months ago. If you are running a flat tappet cam (hyd or solid) either use good synthetic and add a pint of GM EOS or Royal Purple Race, Red line race, Joe Gibbs race etc. that does not have API certification.

Is this FACT ?? I thought I read they were going to keep the old formula for a while.....

the current GM EOS DOES NOT contain the heavy metals (zinc) like it used to. that has been discussed several times on the board already

My local Walmart does not carry it. Apparently it varies from store to store.

October 15 was the changeover date for the Oil, as it was the same date for lower sulphur content in deisel fuel. You can still find the old formulation (CI-4) as stores clear out their inventory. The new formulation is CJ-4, apparently. I think it has been written that you'll still be able to buy the old formulation if you buy in large quantity, ie. 5 gallon pail, although I can't confirm this.

I added a quart of 5W-30 Castrol to the 15W-40 Rotella to thin it. (1 qt to 4)

    Oil

Does oil have a shelf life? Seems to me it should last a long time unopened and in an indoor enviroment. I'm thinking maybe I'll buy a few gallons of the old Rotella 15/40 and keep it on hand. The winters here in southern NV. aren't cold enough to worry about using 10/30. My local Walmart doesn't have Rotella 10/30 either. :Do No: Bob Harris

I also found the 10W-30W at O'rielleys(not sure about spelling)
I figure 15W-40W is a fuzz too thick for a 455 down here so it would surely be too thick for the Northern climate.
    Just my opinion...

Anybody know about using the new STP "oil Fortifier" or some such name? It's not the snot-like STP we know and love from years past. It says right on the bottle it has ZDDP. I just used some to break in my cam along with 10-30 Rotella T I suspect is the "new" formula.

They can order 10w-30 Rotella anywhere. Just ask. My autoparts store has it in the back.

    re 15 40 oil

Here living On Long Gisland -one can probably get away with 15 40 oil year round--U can use some marvel mystery oil to thin it out---great stuff-cleans the crankcase gently)---I have a 94 bmw 325 inherited for My local LIRR daily commute and BMW recommends 15 40 year round --not that I use it---I use 10 30 synthetic 3 quarts mixed with 10 40 converntional in the winter and in the summer I change to 20 50 4 quarts and conventional & 3 quarts synthetic 15 50---OH YES THE LITTLE 2.5 LITER ENGINE IS ABOUT 153 CUBES & TAKES 7 QUARTS!! AND BY THE WAY I HATE THE CAR!! :blast: :blast: :blast: :blast: :blast:
